"Follow me, Brothers! I need something sacred from you all!"

T
he Eagles Vigilant were founded in 500.M36 as part of the 22nd Founding. At their creation they were known as the Sentinels, under Chapter Master Augustus of the White Consuls. Their first major combat action was on the Hive World of Aquilum in Segmentum Obscurus, against a major Ork incursion. It was on Aquilum that the Chapter gained its skill in and reputation for aerial assault, particularly the reckless tactic of sending drop-pods and Thunderhawks down during the midst of an orbital bombardment. The Sentinels soon earned glory and honour on the field of battle. But in M38 a great tragedy would strike the Chapter. Captain Majorian's Third Company was entirely wiped out in a heroic stand against a horde of Orks. The entire Chapter recklessly resolved, as one, to avenge him, even if it took a thousand years. For eighty years the Chapter was entirely absent from its home-world. And in such absence heresy bloomed.

When the Sentinels returned to their homeworld, it had risen in full revolt against the Imperium. Heresies and treacheries uncounted had arisen in those eighty years, and the planet's vox-transmitters screamed abuse and insult at the proud returning fleet. Although the heretics could not reach the Chapter fortress, as it was located on the planet's moon, they had full control of the planet. The Sentinels ravaged Aquilum with orbital bombardment and massive drop-pod assaults, slaying many millions of heretics. Yet in their desperation, the heretics unleashed the daemons of Chaos upon the world, a massive daemonic legion that was far beyond the Sentinels' ability to defeat. In the end, the planet was given the mercy of Exterminatus by the Chapter fleet, all life consumed in fire. Chastened and humiliated, the Chapter renamed itself - the Sentinels became the Eagles Vigilant. The Chapter fortress was evacuated of all necessary commodities and destroyed, a ruin overlooking a dead world. Never again would the Eagles Vigilant be so foolish.

Never again would they tolerate such heresy. The Chapter became fleet-based, now their fortress-monastery was the Battle-Barge Aquila Fulguris. Their beliefs, previously similar to those of other Chapters, mutated to worship of the Emperor as divine, rather than the more orthodox view of him as the greatest of men.

BATTLE-CRY

"Ever Watchful! Ever Wrathful!"

It seems to me that their mistake was to leave a planet unattended and to satisfy honour by wiping out a foe. They're punishment was that their homeworld turned.

What did they do that was foolish? I'm really not sure what lesson they've learned from that mistake.

You also say "never again would they tolerate such heresy". They didn't tolerate - they attached as soon as they got back. Is your point that they should have went straight to exterminatus?
