Wargamer40k
Hey all so i've been messign with my airbrush for the past few days but i cant seem to get the mix ratio right :). i've been using reaper and some flow aid and that seems to be working so far but i find that the paint drys almost like a wash. and Citadel paint keeps jamming the brush ;). i've tried a 2:1 reaper to wash ratio also but i find the paint drys almost bumpy. any suggestions? recipes? (also if there is another forum topic about this then im sorry for re-post but i couldn't fint it :S ) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240662-airbrush-paint-mix/ Share on other sites
Brother-Chaplain Kage
Thinning paints for airbrushes is, no pun intended, a very fluid thing, and varies from one product to another. The best advice I can give is an old adage for painting models with an airbrush - you want it about the consistency of milk. Whole milk. Just thick enough that when you spray it on a test piece of paper, it doesn't run, but sticks in place. Wargamer40k
makes sense  thanks for the tip. someone mentioned mixing with windex?? not sure how that would work any idea? Brother-Chaplain Kage
I've heard of that, but I usually use a bit of alcohol to break the water tension with acrylics. Windex makes sense, because water tension is what causes spotting, and I don't doubt it has a surfactant in it to break the tension. But finding the right consistency for airbrushing is a bit like the same for painting with a brush - only practice will teach you when you've got it just right. Redfinger
dont use straight windex as the blue can change the color of the paint, use a 50/50 mix, alcohol works nice too, but I have found it too cause paint to dry too fast if I use a higher concentration of alcohol to thin with, if you decide to got the alcohol route, thin it down first like 1:4 with water, then thin the paint. In my experience the more saturated colors, like red, purples yellows, whites, tend to need less thinning, while the deeper colors like blacks, browns, and greens dont need as much. winterdyne
Rather than alcohol I usually add a little acrylic flow improver to water to thin. Works pretty well, but as others have said, it's pointless to try and give exact proportions - it varies on your brush, your paint, your pressure and your preference.
