Friend changed to BA from SW

Well a friend of mine is collecting Logan wing, he has a great list, but needs to get ten more SW termi's to finish it. Instead I find out he dropped a lot of cash on BA stuff. Now this would sound fine except-

- I gave him all my melta's and spare cyclone ML's, and even butchered several landspeeder typhoon launchers to make sure he had the proper kit. I also modeled these on his termi's for free and gave him the bits for free.

- I painted seven termi's for him for quite a cheap price and I spent at least ten hours making sure they were perfect/ something of mine I would paint quality/standards wise.

- The amount of cash he dropped on BA dex+ figs so far equals the two SW termiboxes he needed in the first place!

- He now has two armies which are not effective because they are nowhere near finished army comp wise, so I can't even get a proper 1500pt game against him.

- I don't play often though have played more games than him in 5th ed. He talks to the so called "vets" at a GW store. He thought it was a good idea to take less termi's at 1500pts and take lots of dreadnaughts. Again for what he spent on one dread he could have got one of the termi boxes he needed. I taught him a harsh lesson by dropping it in turn 3 with MM attack bikes. Wasn't keen on dreads after that, thankfully. Sure dreads at 1750+ not 1500 for his logan wing list surely?

- If it wasn't for me writing his lists he would have a really crappy army comp that he would not really be able to win with against someone who knows what they are doing.

Case in point- Death company with jump packs- complete point sink, and the BA list he wrote had zero scoring units. How is he going to win any games in 5th ed with no scoring units apart from ahnialation?! There is just no way he would have the patience to run BA jumpers list as that is an advanced play style with an unforgiving learning curve and the potential to waste a lot of cash if you buy the wrong stuff.

What do I do? Do I pound him into the ground everytime we have a game to show him his tweaks to solid lists dilute their effectiveness/ competitiveness? Do I not bother?- that would be the easy option, though if he wanted to do 2v2 battles and I was on his team, it would be like fighting with one arm behind your back. What I would like to do is buy his logan wing as I always wanted that army myself- though I would have to re-paint a lot of stuff, so it might not even be worth it.

SW sages I sk for wisdom, what dose one do?!

He sounds young and impulsive, as such very easily swayed with impulsive buys and decisions. I would suggest that you set up some milestones for him before you help him any more. Example tell him if he buys, assembles, primes and base coats the needed models for a unit you will finish them with the wash and detail work. But don't enable his impulsive nature by giving him anything more or doing any more work for him on the cheap. The more you help ease the pain and repercussions of his bad decisions the more likely he will be to make further bad decisions.

Sure help a friend in need but when your talking about someone who continually takes advantage of your generosity and good nature while offering nothing in return, it's time to reevaluate your friendship.

I cant blame Him Im always Jumping back and forth between my BAs and Wolves. Right now its Wolves cause no one in my group wants to lose to my BAs (there 15-0). So Im playing my wolves (1-3). The nice thing is that I buy an work on the army Im playing at the moment. I would say play 1000 to 1250pt game with him thats what we have been doing.

he needs to take ownership for his army which ever it is and i feel the best way is the hard way ie in at the deep end ,tbh you sound like a great mate and a good all round egg well done ,but some folks need to do it them selves to just care more about there stuff,

i did the same sort of thing a few times with diferant friends over the years just dont stress about it and enjoy killing the blood angels for a bit nothing teaches the cools nice of wolves more than victory if folks arnt into the fluff

hope this helps

Buy the wolves off him, imo. Serves him right for switching to team Edward. So what if you have to repaint a few things.. 10hrs a model is under par for what a lot of people do, and if it's 10hrs for the lot then it sounds like you breezed through it (not to say your painting is good or bad, just your painting speed is pretty fast by comparison).

I'd make the guy start writing his own army, but I'd guide him.. "Make sure you've got atleast 1 scoring unit" or "You're playing a 1500pt game. Do you really think it's wise to have 1/3 of your points placed into a single model?" etc... You could mention an old "golden rule" for SWs in 3rd - 4th edition for him to keep in mind - atleast 1 pack of GHs per 500 points was the standard comp. ...and a good basis for a guideline.

Also, doesn't sound like he's playtesting AT ALL before buying these models. Definitely get some "counts as" proxy models to have him test these compositions he's wanting to try before he shells out hundreds of dollars for stuff he'll use once.

We use to have a Vampire LARP where I lived. Dixie by Night. We had 5 Cities with a Masq running every week ends and sometimes 2 a week end. There was a guy who always got used and killed. His charctors died in droves. So my pack took him in and we helped him out. Kept him alive till he had 80 points on the charctor and should have been able to stay alive(well Unalive). So he said he wanted to head out on his own at one masq and against my better judgement we let him go. He was there maybe 30 minutes to an hour and was taken out and killed.

Some people arenot able to see things as they are. And they make bad desisions. It's part of life. Your friend sounds wishy washy, and while you might love his company you can not change his nature. He will be himself. So let him lose his games and just give advise where you can.

You can also just tell him. "Hey bud I think your spinning your wheels and buy the wrong thing all the time." But if he will not listen or understand where your coming from there is nothing you can do.

I would try and buy his models and help him buy some Blood Angels stuff with the money you give him. Help him buy it if you must.

In the end he has to live his life. You have to live yours.

...never paint for other people unless they're paying you for it.

If you play Space Wolves, just buy his army off him—he'll have more cash for BA and you won't have wasted time and effort on collecting parts, building models, and painting them.

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I will just leave him do whatever. I saw him the other day and he is dead keen on the BA, like real fired up so I guess thats good. I will try to get some pics of the SW guys I painted to put up, they aren't Golden demon quality, but still quite good as I have had many opponents compliment me on my painting skills for 40K and warmahordes. Though I did end up writing a better BA list for him and gave him an old landspeeder I did not need. I think if he wants anything else apart from list/tactics advice, I will have to charge him more for comission painting/modeling from now on though.
