New to 40k and Ive chosen SW's

So ive finally decided to try out 40k, ive been playing fantasy since way back in 94', I had a few questions I was hoping to get some insight too. So far ive bought the Codex, A battleforce, and the rulebook to just try and read over things.

I really dislike doing things half arse so although I really want to break into that battleforce it seems with 40k for comp play theres a "what you see is what you get" so I dont want to ruin any models by equipping the wrong items and such. So anyhow ive been reading over the codex a bit and hopefully have come up with a standard unit I will be fielding.

So here goes I need all C&C or any support you can aid me with as ive never played before but more-so looking to make my groups so I can start my models. 9 GH, 1 w/PW, 1 w/ Mark, 1 w/standard, 1 w/ melta Led by a WG w/ Mark in a Rhino. Is this something feasible? to over the top or should all my units be like this for my grey hunters atleast or somewhat alike this unit? WhenI finish units ill be going onto other things such as long fangs in the near future I just wanna have a good idea of what the basic builds are that can be used for effectiveness.

Welcome to the fang brother. Have a tankard and enjoy!

The only thing I would recommend is a power fist on the Wolf guard instead of MOTW. The power fist really comes in handy with the 2 attacks a WG gets because thats 2 no save wounds if you hit where with MOTW I seem to barely roll 6's.

Read this: http://space-wolves-grey.blogspot.com/2010...er-tactics.html

..after that, check here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=235611

You have a good start, and we could easily bombard you with preferential options based on our playstyle, but ultimately it will depend on YOUR playstyle. You seem to like MotW, and the idea of getting into melee. Emptydens has a good point regarding the WG, and the most common pack leader load-out is powerfist + combi-melta. Keep in mind that out of all 10 WG in one pack, only one will get MotW, so the only way you can get MotW on a WG pack leader for, say, 3 GH packs, you'd need a minimum of 9 WG (since it's 3 min. for one WG pack).

As to WYSIWYG, you do not have to show every weapon equipped. The rules on load-outs on a model is that if the unit/model comes equipped with an items as standard, then it is not required to be shown on the model. However, should a Grey Hunter be equipped with a power fist or a melta (basically, any wargear added on as extra equipment), then those should be shown on the model. Also keep in mind that a CCW can be pretty much anything, especially for a Space Wolf. ;)

An option for multiple loadouts with limited models is to acquire some hobby magnets and magnetize the arms/torsos of your models to switch out a bolter for melta or power fist at your whim.

Everyone has their own method for WYSIWYG though. I, personally, prefer to have all of my Grey Hunters with a bolter shown somewhere on them, and my Claws to have atleast one bolt pistol (sometimes two since they're also ccw's). After that, so long as one of those are present, I toss on chainswords, axes, knives, planks of wood, etc as I see fit.

Thanks for the C&C so far right now i think im gunna hold off on any of the extra equipped guys, and just build the minimum amount of basic guys im gunna need for each unit with a chainsword and bolter/boltgun, this seems the way i like the models the most for now.

First off, welcome! You've picked one of the armies w/ the most character in 40K. Plus, unlike some of the flavors of the month, the space wolves have been around & been as different from regular marines as we are today since almost the beginning. I believe ours was the first codex book released when 2nd ed started to really make the different chapters more than just paint schemes.

Can't really argue w/ anything that's been said here, just a quick word on building grey hunters. In theory they SHOULD have bolters shown on them to keep confusion down amongst opponents, but beyond that, have fun building them. I build some in the tactical marine style holding the bolter two-handed, some w/ bolter/chainsword & some w/ bolter/bolt pistol just for kicks.

I just make sure to paint my blood claws right shoulder yellow & grey hunters red (as starts for my pack markings later) to help me identify them at a glance when assembling my packs before a game. To further differentiate them I like to paint my grey hunters helmets black, blood claws helmets red & the same w/ the knee armor for the models that have seperate knees, grey hunters get black, blood claws get red. That just helps me know when I look over my sea of 5000 pts of space wolves before a 1500 pts game for example, who's what easily. It also makes it easier for my opponents to know as well.

Thanks for the great support I just finished my first reading of the rulebook and after playing fantasy for so long it seems pretty easy to transition over, now im working on a couple lists and such to see how that goes as its a little different than fantasy.
Blood Claws are swelling

welcome brother

Is this the part where we drag him off into the wilderness and leave him there with only a knife? Cos, seems like I'm the only one who had to do that......just sayin'...... <_<

Nah....this'll be where we let Arez 'Greenhorn' talk rubbish to him till it starts a brawl. Takes about 30 seconds on average.

Give him some credit, brother. I'll give him a whole minute ;)
