How to ensure that magnets won't fall out?

Recommended Posts

Disclaimer,

I've magnetized arms, backpacks, weapons and dreadnought arms in the past and while superglue (and sometimes GS) has helped to keep the magnets in place - the newest batch of magnets is so strong that one of them always 'rips' itself out of the socket.

Does anyone have any tips and tricks besides glue and greenstuff that might help?

I thought about making a plasticard frame but I have no idea how to go about doing that, or if it will even hold.

PS. I did check both the Librarium and the tutorial section.

when mounting the magnets leave space so they don't actually touch, if they are as strong as you say a small gap won't stop them from working. or you could sink the magnet deeper into the model and put a layer of plastic card over it.

This. Most magnets will work through layers of plastic.

I just use a tight fit between magnet and hole and a small ball of GS in the bottom of the hole.

A drop of superglue and they stay in place fine.

I leave it to cure for several days as the weather (as well as ambient temps) are dodgy around here atm.

Haven't had a magnet come out yet.

I know how it is. 99% of your magnets are fine, but there's that one stubborn one that just won't stay.

As already said, two-part epoxy might be the most straight forward, but your idea of adding a plastic 'shim' might make sense too. If you don't have any pre-cut strip plastic (you'd be amazed how thin you can get it) you can 'shave' a little wedge of plastic off of a sprew and use that. Rub it on some fine sandpaper under a fingertip and you can refine how thin/small it is.

Might even consider both. Use a tiny bit of 5min epoxy and place the magnet, make a really thin shim, and jam it in beside the magnet (especially if there's an obvious gap), add a thin veneer of 5min epoxy over to fill all gaps/cracks. Once cured, you might need to file the surface a bit to make it flat, but do that to the hard epoxy. If the magnet is ever-so-sightly below the surface of the epoxy it will never come out.

It can a bit more work, but if you 'sink' a magnet (about .25mm to .5mm under the surface) and then make a plug of some sort, they can never pop out. As you said, they're starting to get so strong, they don't need to actually touch to produce enough pull.

If you can't (or just don't want to) 'sink' the magnet, remember to rough up the side that will be glued. They are fiddly, but rub the glue side on some medium grit sandpaper for a few seconds and give it a bit of texture. These magnets are smooth nickle plated, even a light rough up will give a surface better bonding qualities.
