Ok, I'm back again already (pretty quick turn around for me), decided to post as soon as I finished this guy as he's a true return to the Crimson Tears after the Deathwatch distraction.
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/9/22/649422_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/9/22/649421_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/9/22/649424_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/9/22/649423_sm-.JPG

I know there's quite a lot of him showing considering he appears to be trying to take cover. The idea was that he was just about to get up and aim, but got shot at while doing so and thus he's not quite in cover, not quite fully exposed

While I was at it I painted up the bases for the rest of the squad.
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/9/22/649425_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/9/22/649426_sm-.JPG

3 left to do for a full 10 man tactical squad and that would leave me on 90 2nd Company marines (not including command elements). That battle company might happen after all!

deathspecter -  thanks, man. The flames and scales have done bad things, they've put an allied Salamander detachment in me head... His helmet is a Legion Of The Damned one. A few months back I feared (for some reason) that they might eventually discontinue the failcast figures so I bought all the main boxes to cut up for parts (much against my better judgement as I fear what that material can leave you with). Turns out that purchase left me with the perfect bit.

The_Chaplain - thank you very much. Yeah, tell me about it, realistic, dynamic poses are difficult to get right. I'm pretty sure I sometimes spend longer posing than painting.

thamier - thanks a lot. I'd love to come join you in Sweden, in fact I'm slowly saving up for a tour of Scandinavia eventually, but, as I've said before, I don;t think there's an awful lot I can teach you.

Quixus - cheers. Ah, well, you know Salamanders and their flame weapons, back at the Watch keep if he's not checking the promethium lines then he's polishing the thing. More seriously, I didn't even think to dirty it up as it doesn't fit my clean style.

Kierdale - thanks, chap. As for smooth colours, I don't know really; thinning, layers and patience seem to do the trick.

Bio - cheers,  buddy. Provided I don't get distracted again by a shiny idea (yeah right...) the plan is to do the last few tacticals from my 'take cover' squad and the last couple of breachers so that I clear my WIP list a little and get some fully finished units.

Sticking with the notion that this is a WIP not a showcase thread I haven't got any finished models today, but I have done enough on a few things that I thought it was time to share, not least because I bring you a whole new unit type to the Crimson Tears. More on that later.

First up, here's most of the penultimate breacher:
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/1/651619_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/1/651617_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/1/651618_sm-.JPG

I buggered up the axe haft while I was trying to pin it to a hand and got pretty annoyed with myself as I am down to my last couple of chainaxes for the moment and can't justify buying more yet (because if I go to Forgeworld's site I'm going to be picking up a hell of a lot more than an £11 pack of chainaxes, that's just the way it is) Stand up the Vanguard kit, proving it's worth yet again with a bunch of stubby Thunder Hammers that I am never going to use. Chop off the hammer head, replace with the axe head and voila, a much sturdier, bigger chain axe. I like to imagine that the he was a potential techmarine who didn't quite make the grade but has enough know-how to tinker with his weapon and so has given it an even more souped up motor to get those teeth really whirring, ready to tear anything to shreds.

I've also been blocking in the white on my vaulting guy, proof that he is in the works and will leap off the WIP pile at some point:

Perhaps the most significant part of this update, though, is the introduction of the Penitents:

One of the Crimson Tears’ deviations from the Codex Astartes is the existence in each company of unit of shamed marines dubbed Pentitents. The curious thing about these ad-hoc squads is that their members are there by their own recommendation rather than by the judgment of their peers and superiors. If a Crimson Tear believes himself to have acted in a way that would bring shame to himself and the Chapter then his honour requires him to volunteer said transgression to his company Chaplain and request assignment to the ranks of the Penitents, to be released when the marine feels his deeds are sufficient to erase the stain on his reputation. Obviously the notion of marines requiring punishment and forgiveness has attracted the attention of the Inquisition, but upon investigation it was found that the reasons for becoming a Penitent were always some perceived martial failing, whether that be failing to reload quickly enough to save a brother marine from the foe or coming second best in a duel, rather than heresy or treachery. Indeed, the disappointment of certain Inquisitorial agents at finding no evidence of corruption was palpable as was the barely supressed glee that accompanied their rigorous investigation of an Astartes Chapter. Generally on good terms with the Inquisition and its various arms, Crimson Tears commanders were quietly affronted in the face of the conduct and implicit accusations of particular operatives, individuals for whom further contact with the chapter is probably inadvisable. It is understood that rebukes heavy with barely restrained fury were sent to high ranking officials of the Ordo Hereticus as soon as the investigation was concluded and the offenders away from the Chapter. How these were received remains unknown.

The Penitents are set apart from their brothers by daubing the white parts of their armour a deep crimson and changing their pauldrons for ones sporting engraved crosses, the marks of their private shame. In an intriguing aesthetic divergence the chapter icon is repainted from crimson to white, representing the purity of deed and redemption of identity that Penitents aspire to. Knowing that the redemption of reputation and restoration of honour, in a chapter where the latter is so particularly highly valued, are contingent upon martial achievements frequently leads Penitent marines to find levels of resilience and aggression beyond those of an ordinary space marine. There are numerous battlefield reports of brothers shrugging off the most grievous of wounds in order to wreak terrible carnage on the foe. By dint of needing to redeem themselves through deeds on the battlefield Penitents almost exclusively fight with close quarter weapons, showing consistency with the Crimson Tears’ belief that the most honourable fight is face to face, blade to blade.

Once his penance is served and honour restored a Penitent will rejoin his former squad without comment or question. There are some, particularly those who believe their actions or lack thereof caused a brother to fall, who struggle to allow that their deeds have purged whatever perceived stain existed on their reputation and recquire the intervention of a Chaplain or other command figure to help re-assure them that they have done enough to return to the ranks unblemished.

Here's what a partially painted and assembled one looks like.

They are my counts-as Death Company and I had to have a long, hard think about how to include them given that ,although I use C:BA to construct this army, I have shied away from making them overt Blood Angel Successors.

Anywho, back to the paint station.

deathspecter - Cheers. Yeah go for it man, you'll start to find that 25mm bases are tricky things to find space on for a marine and building debris, a new dimension to the modelling challenges this hobby presents! I regret not buying the LOTD in metal, even if their finecas incarnations are easier to carve up. Who knows, with a bit of luck they might get a super detailed plastic kit in the future, certainly most of the finecast ones have disappeared of the GW site.

Augustus - haha, thanks bud. You may want to take some safety precautions as he will indeed be vaulting (eventually...)  and I'd hate to be responsible for any exploding brain matter that would deprive the forum of your future work.

Argent Aquila - yes you do and thank you very much.

NightHunters - Yes, mission accomplished. I've always wanted to do that kind of pose, but not take the conventional route of using it on a plasma gunner. Heh, who do you thin is going to finish their squad first? My money's on you as this post shows very clearly that my hobby ADD is getting worse and worse.

+1 internetz for using the word 'penultimate' in a post! You can score an extra bonus point if you can tell us what the word is for the THIRD-to-last of something is. :D No cheating! The internet knows... :ph34r.:

But seriously, the fluff is a VERY clever solution to the Death Company issue, and they might look even cooler than your normal models, though I didn't think that was possible. They tie in well, but are still easy to tell apart and they come across as elite troops right away. Very cool stuff.

Great fluff and lovely colour scheme on those penitents, I really need to get into the fluff on my boys, lots of ideas just need to put them down!

And re what is clearly now a squad race to the finish I beg to differ! I am 4 down, 6 to go with an aircraft sucking painting time!

R

Well, invigorated by my Pentitent, I've used every spare moment I had this weekend to paint and this is the result:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/5/652541_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/5/652542_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/5/652543_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/5/652544_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/5/652545_sm-.JPG

I've often pondered what I'm going to do with the broken sword icon bits I've acquired and adding it to someone who has transgressed seemed perfect. It's all I can do now not to just build up a whole squad of these guys, other projects be damned. However, I will stay the course, not least because one of those projects, the Breachers, is another step closer to being completed:

Deathspecter- Thanks, pal. Glad you enjoyed the read.

Bio - same to you , thanks for dropping and letting me know I'm still doing things right.

Kierdale - it seems I've stumbled upon something that really works with these Penitents, eh? Thanks for your words, mate.

Night Hunters - cheers, buddy. Yeah, write that stuff down! To be fair I have a distinct advantage in that my job affords me great leeway to just start doing my own thing - 'Ok kids, you've been talking too much for my liking, silent working for the next 20 minutes (while I write this idea down in my notebook)'. Ah, the joys of being a cover supervisor rather than a teacher.
Ha! It sounds like our competition is actually who can find the most distractions.

JeffTibbets - Thank you for the very kind words. I do love it when the fluff goes down well. I'm also a pretty big fan of you calling me clever, I must confess I had no idea what the word for 3rd to last was which made me feel substantially less intelligent, but I'm glad you prompted me to find out because it is ridiculous. Feels very British though and I am now able to say that the vaulting tactical marine is the antepenultimate member of his squad.

lol. You got it! I had no idea you were an educator, either. I would be, if there had been any jobs available when I graduated. Now I'm happily working as a writer and I feel almost no compulsion to get back into a classroom. Much respect, though. It's a tough job, but a heck of a lot of fun.

  • 2 weeks later...

Dropping by with a some shots of the 8th tactical. I'm not 100% sure that it's the most convincing vaulting pose you're ever likely to see, however, it's as good as it'll likely get without rebuilding from the ground up. If I had my time again I would've pisitioned the ruin he's vaulting over so that it was more central and I wouldn't have had to work on re-balancing the base. Hooray for micro beads, superglue and Vallejo Plastic Putty. Oh and the occasional traitor helmet, always good base decoration. The laser sight also seems to have gone completely orange in the photo for some reason :s

deathspecter - did you like them?

JeffTibbets - You got it right that it's tough and I am looking for my escape route at the moment. There are things that make it feel like the best job in the world sometimes, however, it can also feel like the absolute opposite and having spend two and half years doing I've reached a point where the former isn't happening often enough to counteract the latter. Very envious of you being a writer, mate. I get that that can be a pretty tenuous and sometimes fraught profession unless you luck into being a gazillion selling novellist like, say, Stephen King, but, to an outsider who fancies he can write a touch, it sounds very exciting.  The major and most relevant downside to jacking in the education biz is that it'll probably have a negative impact on my hobby time. Not having marking to do, but benefiting from holidays has been rather kind to my Crimson Tears over the last couple of years.

Argent Aquila - thank you very much, my friend.

Augustus - Thanks, bud. I have compiled the bits for the final Breacher and another Penitent, but I'm not allowing myself a crack at them until I wrap up another tactical because I really want to get that squad into the finished column if my progress table. So they will come, there will be, as you demand, MOAR.

I am in envy of your ability to paint clean lines and inspired by the posing. They look great. THey do make me think Malal, just a little bit, but they're still great. I'd kind of like to see more weathering and battle damage on them, but that's totally subjective. Good job.

Can't believe i haven't commented on the Crimson Tears yet! Been watching them for a while.

Some incredible conversions and ideas here, bro. Especially love the Penitent. Pretty envious of your ability to paint such a strong, clean white next to a predominantly black miniature. Great stuff.

I wish my writing job was as exciting as you probably think it is. I write email, specifically, all day every day. Not only can it be maddeningly repetitious, I'm also something of an anomaly in the industry. I went to an email design conference and was literally the only person I could find that wrote copy for email all day long. :P We're rare. Anyway, I do enjoy writing quite a bit, and there are worse jobs one could have, but I often feel like a copy-paste machine. Everyone wants to be a writer, including many of my colleagues who always like to toss in "let's change this to say _____" and then I've got to replace my hard work with stuff that's often off the mark.

At any rate, I do miss teaching. Subbing was always fun for the reasons you mentioned (no grading or lesson planning!) but work was unsteady at best around here. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side, right? Maybe we can trade jobs for a bit. That means we also get to trade armies, RIGHT? RIGHT? ;)

  • 3 weeks later...

Been a little slow the last couple of weeks, with Halloween looming I turned my attention to the horror models I acquired for a Vampire Counts Mordheim warband and heavy weapons always seem to take me forever. Still, progress has been made and the tactical marine is almost at completion. As a reward I had a crack at a second Penitent, he's a lot of the way down the road but the bits that remain are some of the more fiddly and time-consuming ones.

You don't want too much of my waffle, though, do you, so pictures:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/31/659875_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/31/659876_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/31/659878_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/31/659877_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/31/659879_sm-.JPG

The multi-melta was part of some bits I got off ebay and, unfortunately, was prepared far more roughly than is ideal (divets where the sprue connected, mis-aligned gun barrels). Now, while I've tried to tidy it up as best I can, there's still a couple of very evident flaws, most notably those gun barrels. Coming up with a colour for the weapon cables was a bit of a challenge. I've used green for plasma, blue for lascannons/power weapons and violet/ blue-purple for force weapons; this left yellow, orange, black and grey, none of which rally took my fancy. Then I remembered a colour I love, but don't often get to use: Vallejo Model Colour Violet Red. Does what it say on the tin really, it's a fairly dark reddy-purple and I think it's worked well as a different colour to include in my colour scheme while still fitting. My particular highlight on the model so far is the targetting screen.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/31/659871_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/31/659872_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/31/659873_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/31/659874_sm-.JPG

The scrolls and censor mark this Penitent as the groups current archivist, he records the deeds of each brother so that once the exhilaration of battle has subsided they can calmly reflect on their actions and determine whether they have been sufficient atonement.

Edit - is it just me or are my pictures getting worse? Think the ancient camera may be on its last legs...

BrotherCaptainArkhan -  Cheers, man. I don't have a huge range of tricks up my sleeve when it comes to painting so I try to make sure what I can do is done well and aim to ensure the posing is bang on as even a great looking mini can be let down by a bad stance; so, when that get's picked up, my ego feels doubly satisfied  Re: the weathering, I like that look, but I also like clean marines and given that that's how I started the 'Tears, plus the extra time it takes to mess up models I painstakingly devote a not inconsiderable amount of time to it's not something I'll be delving into on a wide-scale. I might make a really battered Crimson Tear for an objective at some point just to try some methods out.  Ha you're not the first one to notice the resemblance to those traitors and I doubt you'll be the last, I once wrote a little story about a 'Tears strike-force that involved itself in a conflict without letting any imperial commanders know and got mistaken by some Guard for the Malal worshipping Sons Of Malice to acknowledge the similarity. Might have to finish it one day.

MagicMan - thanks for stopping by and for the kind words. Don't be envious of my masochism, for that's what painting white over black is, be glad you don't feel a similar drive! I love the Penitent, too, currently it's all I can do not to say feth everything else and start building an entire squad's worth, but I'm determined to finish the units I currently have underway before allowing that.

Jeff - I've got a couple of friends who are jobbing writers and they've confirmed to me that the profession is nowhere near as exciting as my brain wants it to be while I'm telling a child for the third time in 20 minutes to share a textbook... If I get your Knight, then we can definitely talk about trading armies

Thrasius - thanks a lot, fella. Your Scythes are brilliant.

To those of you who like a post rather than comment, a big thank you, too. I do notice, I do appreciate it.

Edited by sockwithaticket

Ooohh i like mini flamer, is it from a kit? Or did you convert it?

i tried my hand at it using a bolt pistol as a base whenever i made mine, but it doesn't look nearly as good as that one (maybe it's cuz mine's still plastic grey that makes me think that though:wacko.: )

I really like the purple-red of the multi melta feed lines, it's actually enough of a different color for the colorblind to be able to tell the difference easily, without looking too much like one or the other.:smile.:

hope for more soon!
