Warlord Titan - A journey to improvement

About four months ago I begun on a journey designing and building warlord titans. Since that time I have built a total of 14 warlords - not counting the first couple of prototypes- and each one is an improvement from the last. The reason I would like to post this is mainly to show how one's determination, use of trial and error and constructive criticism from community members can lead to immense improvement on modelling projects.

These titans are built mainly using extruded polysterene and foam board but -through the course of redesigning the model- have lead to more polysterene and less foamboard. The reference was the current model from Epic

So here goes :D

These pictures are from the first couple of Warlords I designed. I must say, I didnt pay almost any attention to the scaling of the torso. Instead of taking precise measurements from the epic model and applying them to 40k scaling, I went for a more maverick approach of doing what looked best. Well, the lesson learnt was that for models of this size, it really pays to have precise measurements in advance and - most importantly - stick to them even when some parts might look they wont look good during construction.

- Yuck! -

Well, that one was scratched so on I went to a different scaling for the torso as well as the head - which ended up being my current prototype (which looks more and more outdated with every new titan).

Immense improvement but still a lot of things are out of place. Legs are too small, head is too big (although I realised that a few weeks later) and the torso geometry is still wrong.

On I went to make a titan inspired from the Comic Titan - namely Imperius Dictatio. The torso was improved - although ended up being more deep than it should - however the feet were not the correct size. It is worth noting that by this time, my titans were slightly unbalanced. A few times I woke up at night by a cataclysmic noise when a titan would topple over and knock - in one occasion - my stompa or whatever seemed to be in falling radius (falling giant anyone?)

The next models saw the increase in polysterene which meant lighter construction and more smooth surfaces to work with. At that time I was working with a CnC milling machine to sculpt parts from 3d models - but that was to see fruition later.

The legion of titans in my workshop at the time in various construction stages

At the time I was also working on an Emperor Titan commission so I decided to make a video of all my current projects. The stability of the titans - with the use of the polysterene- had improved so much I had to show it off ;)

Here is that video.

Ever since that video my titans have improved even further. More detail, more stability and yet more functionality.

The end of my journey - or rather a chapter of it - lies with this Titan that will decorate the window of Games Workshop Hull in the UK.

The key to bring the titan together was - after all- the head. It looked small on its own, but when it was inserted into the torso it completely transformed him and showed off his size.

Well that was my journey so far -

Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did ;)

I would love to use that jaw-drop smiley, but I don't think it quite conveys how I feel right now. You are, quite possibly, the most awesome scratch-builder I have ever seen. No to mention that, but your painting is awesome to match. Is that Sky/Earth NMM on the 5th picture down?

Yup

NMM is awesome on huge surfaces :)

Thanks for your kind words

What is the size of the dimesions?

The height of the Warlord titan is a point for debate throughout the internet. I went with the latest references, Space Marine game, recent novels etc, which portray the Warlord as being around 35 metres tall. Using the heroic scaling of Warhammer (characters being of larger scale than vehicles) this brings the Warlord to around 22-24" - which also seems right as the Reaver titan with only 1 carapace weapon short from the Warlord is 16-17".

There are some Titans out there with disturbing proportions .

Thank you. I am thinking of doing some scratch builts of a Warlord titan myself.
