Studio Silvernale
I am toying with starting a pre-heresy army. I can't decide between Emperor's Children or Alpha Legion. Aside from that, is there a list of what gear/vehicles aren't available until after the Heresy? I know the Mk 6-8 armors aren't available but not much else. So any input on either would be useful. Grotsmasha
Combi-bolters rather than Storm bolter, no Razorbacks, standard LRs, no LRR or LRC, there were Assault cannons, but autocannons were prevelant. I'm fairly sure Imperial defenders on Terra got emergency supplies of Mk VII, so Mk VI may be safe. G3rman
Check this thread out for a link to a PDF on Pre-Heresy info. You'd be better off posting in the Pre-Heresy section of this forum anyway, this area would be more for asking questions on the actual process of making/painting/assembling the models. Pre-heresy armies are time-consuming and a bit more expensive, but entertaining and full of history. Good luck. Studio Silvernale
Ah thanks for the pdf. I have a good idea how to -make- the army, just not which one or what to put in it =D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241034-pre-heresy-army/#findComment-2910848 Share on other sites
G3rman
No problem, I have future plans to make a pre-heresy force myself (although I too am torn between Dark Angels and Thousand Sons!) That pdf has battle formations for most of the legions and are perfect outlines of how to go about fleshing out your pre-heresy force. As far as which one to collect, the style/theme and color scheme is what I pay attention to. Can I paint it (and do I like the look of them painted)? Do I like being a sorcerer or am I more of a foot-slogger infantry kind of guy, or do I want a well rounded force that has no specialty? Once you answer those questions, generally you can narrow it down pretty easily. Studio Silvernale
Well the EC have plenty of heroes to convert with all their frippery and whatnot, but the AL gives me the option to say "that is all part of my plan" if I do something tactically dumb =D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241034-pre-heresy-army/#findComment-2910857 Share on other sites
G3rman
EC definitely are about being the perfect fighting force, well all rounders. That said, Gold and Purple are striking colors that really stand out on the table, and you have to be sure to let their proud aquila banners and conversions shine with their pride/arrogance. I love that about Alpha Legion fluff, you can go as far as throw a game and say that it was on purpose for your diabolical scheme. Gave me the same thought when someone plays the Lamenters chapter, that auto excuses them for having a losing streak and/or being a terrible strategist because its all fluff. :P Also, you can use limited pieces of equipment of Mk. 6 and even a rare Mk. 7 helmet or armor piece, as they were constructed in very limited amounts both on Mars and on Terra. I'm for sure about the Mk. 6 but don't quote me on the Mk. 7, even then though, I doubt many will complain if they see one or two in your force with officers etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241034-pre-heresy-army/#findComment-2910864 Share on other sites
NemFX
I've seen some good Emperor's Children armies.. The question is.. Can you paint? If no, then go with Alpha Legion, pretend that you painted them poorly on purpose. "Of course they are supposed to look like that. Helps with camoflage. That's why you can't stand to look at them. Yep. Totally." Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241034-pre-heresy-army/#findComment-2910868 Share on other sites

Grotsmasha
You get my vote for PH Emperors Children, there just isn't enough good looking purple armies out ther. crandall87
I would say the EC too. As they were the only army allowed to wear the aquilla it will make your conversions easier. They are one of my favourite armies from the Pre Heresy era thanks to the awesome book Fulgrim Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241034-pre-heresy-army/#findComment-2911451 Share on other sites
