skrikspya
Evening, after a few weeks of proxing with my blood angels mechanized list as space wolves to try out the rules I decided to build my own pack. However I don't want to build a mechanized force at all for my new breed of super soldiers, not even rhinos or backs to ease transportations. I can stretch to use some speeders/dreads but that's enough tin cans on the board! From a bargain deal I now have 20x grey hunters , 10x aobr termies (have 2 cyclone ml, 2 chain fists in stock aswell if need to change) and one box of devastators. I would like to use as much of them as possible. I don't want to use ANY special/named characters at all. None of my friends at the local club use them and we keep it that way :) If you were in my shoes how would you build your force on foot? For 1500/1750? Any help is appreciated! Hail from a new member of the pack Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241063-new-to-the-pack-need-help-w-all-foot/ Share on other sites
Valerian
This is another one of those questions that comes up a lot, so I will continue to quote my earlier assessment: "You can do "footslogging" and be successful, but you'll still need mobility. A lot of the game is about getting where you need to go. 2 of 3 standard Missions require you to get your units to Objectives to control them, while the final mission requires you to get into position to destroy enemy units for Kill Points. Mobility comes in two forms: Operational Mobility (getting to the battlefield), and Tactical Mobility (moving around on the battlefield). With Behind Enemy Lines, our Wolf Scouts have excellent Operational Mobility, and can arrive usually right where you want them on any board edge; but once the arrive they only have average Tactical Mobility. Drop Pod deployed units are similar with good OM, but average TM. It's a good idea to have one or more of these units in your footslogging lists. Swift Claws, And Thunderwolf Cavalry have average OM (nothing special), but have great TM (especially Swift Claws with ability to Turbo-boost). Sky Claws and Land Speeders have excellent TM, and with ability to Deep Strike, can have improved OM, as well. You will need several units with good mobility to perform the tasks that your otherwise footslogging infantry will not be able to do for you. You won't be able to walk Grey Hunters all across the board to control enemy objectives or assault enemy support units. However, your units with good mobility can take care of those tasks (at least contesting objectives, if not controlling them, for you), while your Grey Hunters, Wolf Guard, and others work on preventing the enemy from achieving his goals. Many folks go "pure" and try to footslog every unit, Drop Pod every unit, or go mechanized and put every unit in a rhino or razorback. I go hybrid, with a little of each, in an attempt to get the exact capability that I think I need for each unit. My "typical" list consists of one unit in a Land Raider, three in Pods, one on Bikes, two coming in Behind Enemy Lines, and the rest just walking. Works well for me. My assessment is that the game requires more mobility to win with some consistency than a true "horde-type" footslogging list can support. Thus, I recommend a hybrid list in which the hordes are augmented with non-mechanized, but highly mobile elements." Also, since you are new to Space Wolves, I recommend you click the link in my signature block and read through the guide on my blog. Scyld Fireblade
Valerian is right that you need mobility. My advice is TWC and scouts. They can hit the enemy hard turn 1 or 2 on and the footsloggers show up in turns 3 and 4. Just be aggressive with your GH and BC packs. skrikspya
Thanks for your answers! I read your guide (and will do so again) and I got to work on a few drafts for a list. I don't really feel like convert TWC since I already do quite some modifications on my units. What I was thinking was in the lines of: 2x Rune priests in TDA, was thinking hurricane and jaws 2x 10 GH, 2 MG 2x WG in TDA w CF, SB 1x 9 GH, MG 1x WG in TDA w PF, combimelta in Drop pod 2x 6 LF, 3x ML, 2xLC 2x WG in TDA, PF, SB + 1 CML 2x 7 Scouts 2x WG w PF What do you think? I was thinking of some HF/MM speeders and/or a rifleman dread but liked the scouts better.
