It is simply the fourth planet orbiting a yellow star not unlike our own. The star is recorded as Armstrong, and consequently the planet is designated Armstrong IV. Its inhabitants call it Deliverance, believed to be named after the colony ship that first landed on its soil. The inhabitants are a strong and noble people, favouring the tools and techniques of a bygone era over the modern machines found elsewhere in the Imperium. The preferred form of transportation is the horse (brought from ancient Terra long ago) and it is said that any child can ride before he can walk. Although extraordinary hunters, the people of Deliverance have no tradition of war among themselves. Although conflicts have arisen they are settled through negotiation, sometimes formalised single combat, and that only to first blood. That said, the Imperium has dispatched lasguns and flak armour to Deliverance, and the people train with them in case of attack. So far that training has been unnecessary. An agricultural world they pay their tithes to the Imperium in foodstuffs. In time past they have acted as a source of recruits for the Dark Angels Space Marine Chapter and despite their lack of militancy it was found that the young men who were brought into the Chapter had an above average level of positive response to the geneseed implantation. When a third founding of the Dark Angels was planned the then current Grand Master proposed a fortress monastery on Deliverance. The first Grand Master of the Angels of Deliverance was Belias, former Second Company Master of the Dark Angels. He was a strong leader, and a wise governor of the planet for the three hundred years he led the Angels. Lost in battle against a Bloodthirster of Khorne, he was replaced by then First Company Master Gideon. Following him came a succession of leaders culminating in the present Grand Master Adonai. Tactical Doctrine Although the Dark Angels nominally follow the Codex Astartes, the Angels of Deliverance were heavily shaped by their founding Master's preference for swift and mobile warfare, along with their home planet's preference for the mounted hunt. Consequently the Angels are most often found mounted on their Space Marine bikes, or wearing jump packs. Indeed, unlike other Chapters, it is their tactical rather than assault squads that ride bikes into battle. It is rare for their warriors to take to the field unmounted, and when they do so it is with reluctance. The exception is the First Company, who (as in all Space Marine Chapters) wear terminator armour and consequently cannot ride bikes. If men afoot can be found it will generally be in the Devastator squads who substitute mobility for extreme firepower. Even then their preference is to take to the air in a Land Speeder variant. Curiousities An unusual feature of the Angels is that they have a great store of Dreadnought armour and it is uncommon to see them take to the field without some of their legendary heroes so interred. Although their people shun technology, the Angels do respect the knowledge of their engineers, especially those involved in the repair and tuning of their bikes. Perhaps this is a holdover from their respect for the blacksmith. Marines of the Angels are encouraged to maintain contact with the people of their families and tribes. In part it allows them to guard against Chaos influence, but in the main it is to ensure they remember what they are fighting for, as much as what they fight against. CKO
I assume that this is your origin section as you dont have any headlines which I recommend it will help the readers alot. You have a good start but I want to know why did they choose a peaceful world for the home world? I also feel like you can shorten it at shorter is better. Freman Bloodglaive
I figure there are enough violent worlds in the Imperium. A backwater planet of no particular distinction from nowhere was a nice change. Plus I like peace and quiet. Headlines inserted. Castiel
Just a quick point, are you aware that Deliverance is also the homeworld of the Raven Guard? Otherwise I think its a really cool idea! Freman Bloodglaive
Yes, but in a universe with a million worlds it doesn't really matter if there are more than one with the same name, especially if it isn't an "official" title, just a name its inhabitants use for it. Freman Bloodglaive
Just thought I'd post a picture of my scouts. There's two squads of five, unless I take "Telion" in which case it's one squad of nine plus Telion. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7246/7012736045_5581b263f0_c.jpg I didn't realize how much the phone flash washed them out, but I guess you can get an idea. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3194/5749187587_bc5e3eee66_z.jpg Brother Captain Matthius, and Brother Librarian Lucius http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5306/5648142702_e9f8c0ccab_z.jpg Coteaz and his apprentice Inquisitor Marcus Aurelius. Wolf Priest Haelaeif
Cool scheme and background. I like how you keep it "down to earth". The only thing I wonder is how their preference for bikes, speeders and thus, very mobile warfare combines with their dreadnoughts, as those are very, very slow after all. Or do those only deploy with their 1st Co.? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241103-angels-of-deliverance/#findComment-3023840 Share on other sites
Freman Bloodglaive
Dreadnoughts are like an ancestral totem for them. They might think Grandfather Bethor is a bit slow, but they're not going to question his right to get out there and kick butt and take names if he wants to. You could also say that Dreadnoughts are like their Long Fangs, venerable old warriors who lay down long ranged fire so the young warriors make it back in (more or less) one piece. Although like the White Scars, not all relish the idea of being entombed in a hulking war machine; to be a source of wisdom and inspiration to future generations, while fulfilling their duty to the Great Spirit (which is how they see the Emperor) is enough of a draw that very few warriors when asked have refused internment. I've mentioned that they fight on foot reluctantly, which is true, but they can fight in normal formations. There's just a lot of grumbling involved. The "smallest violin being played," is the hand signal most often used by sergeants when they're called upon to fight in situations where they can't ride. I think I've figured out the problem I have with painting, I like painting models, not armies. I guess I'll have to paint my army one model at a time. Then I think about my Empire army... bother.
