I had the opportunity to play a friend of mine list last night versus Space Wolves during open gaming evening for the BeakyCon GT. The Grey Knight army counts as Pre Heresy Thousand Sons so it was a good time for sure. The mission is from BeakyCon and features three primary (equally weighted) objectives:

Kill Points, Seize Ground (4 markers), Capture & Control

Whoever takes the most primary objectives wins.

Here was my list -

Brother Captain - incinerator, psykotroke grenades, master crafted warding stave

Librarian - Might of Titans, Quicksilver, The Shrouding, Warp Rift, master crafted warding stave

Vindicare Assassin

5x Grey Knight (Strike squad) - psycannon - rhino

5x Grey Knight terminator - Brotherhood banner, psycannon, 2x halberd, daemonhammer, sword & PBA

5x Grey Knight terminator - Brotherhood banner, psycannon, 2x halberd, 2x sword & PBA

Landraider - multi-melta & extra armor

Landraider Crusader - multi-melta & extra armor

It turns out I had a psyfleman but forgot to field it (remember it's a friend's army).

Here is the Space Wolf list:

Njal

8x Grey Hunter - MotW, Wolf Standard, meltagun - drop pod

8x Grey Hunter - MotW, Wolf Standard, meltagun - drop pod

WG - combi-melta & combi-flamer

WG - TDA, wolf claw & stormshield

WG - TDA, wolf claw, stormshield & cyclone missile launcher

5x Long Fang - 5x missile launcher - drop pod

5x Long Fang - 5x missile launcher

The Wolfguard in terminator armor and cyclone missile launchers each joined a unit of Long Fangs. Njal joined one squad of Blood Claws. The other Wolfguard were mixed with the other units.

Deployment was Dawn of War. I won the roll and opted to go second.

To Be Continued...

Pre Game Analysis

The plan is to start with nothing on the table and roll in on the first turn with the two landraiders carrying GKT along with the Brother Captain and Librarian. The Space Wolf army does not have a lot of heavy hitting melee units that can take it to the GKT and my two HQ other than some of the Wolfguard. The Space Wolf army is designed to destroy conventional mechanized armies such as Imperial Guard and razorspam.

I placed my two Seize Ground objective markers close to my long table (12" away and 12" apart) hoping to bait the first wave of drop pods. The GKT roll onto the table and assault enemy units that have dropped the first turn. The Vindicare will infiltrate behind a hill for some hopeful cover. Unfortunately there are no towers to place him on top on my side of the table. I could have opted to start the Strike squad on the table during the initial deployment for Warp Quake but having opted to go second I think that Njal will come down in the first wave of drop pods and his rune staff blocks enemy psychic powers on a 3+ versus the standard 4+ - the Strike squad would probably have gotten blown off the table and I really need them to hold an objective.

I want to protect my pair of landraiders from enemy meltas and clear out an area where my troops can control objectives. The Space Wolves do have lots of bodies so I'll need to quickly cut through their units. Return fire will be tricky as the enemy has lots of melta weapons so I'll need some clever movement.

Turn 1 - Space Wolves

Four drop pods land - three are full of Grey Hunters (one with Njal) and the fourth has a pack of Blood Claws. Njal's unit lands off to one side of the table placed fairly close to my assassin but scatters off a fair distance. I was hoping to get a shot off on the old psyker but with the long scatter the Space Wolves are cautious and disembark out of potential LOS to the Vindicare. Two more pods land close to my Seize Ground objective markers, which was as planned... One is carrying Grey Hunters and the other is carrying Blood Claws. Both squads of Long Fangs walk onto the table along their long board edge. There is no shooting and his turn ends.

Turn 1 - Grey Knights

Both of my landraiders barrel onto the table (popping their smoke launchers) and I opt to attack the two enemy units that landed by my objective markers. The assassin moves back a bit trying to secure a safer position. I shoot and assault the Grey Hunters and Blood Claws, decimating both. I was careful to position the landraider Crusader so that it's squad of GKT with the two HQ will have some cover when more drop pods arrive the following turn. The other squad of GKT are more exposed and I'm hoping they will draw the attention away from the other squad. The landraider manages to destroy one of the drop pods using PotMS to fire one lascannon.

Kill Points: Space Wolves - 0, Grey Knights - 3
