I started Blood Angels with the old PDF Codex and lovingly printed and bound a copy for use, which is still stored safely under my bed. I have been thinking recently about band wagon jumpers, and wondered how many of those that started a Blood Angel army after the release of the new Codex are still playing/collecting.

How many of us are Pdf and before Veterans, and how many came to the revered BA's after the new codex.

As I said when the new codex came out, I didn't worry about "Band wagoners". In my local area, Blood Angel armies popped up like crazy. Within a few months, most had moved on to Space Wolves.

I'm no longer the only BA player locally, but those that stayed aren't bandwagoners, they've stayed because something about the BA style they enjoy playing.

Nor am I concerned about band wagon jumpers.

I was hoping to take a small survey of the numbers on this community that are veteran BA players or fresh recruits with the new codex.

The time since our codex came out should have meant the last of the Band wagon jumpers will have gone and now left with loyal brothers.

My love for the Blood Angels came from the fast it is a fast army that can take a hit. Dark Eldar are also fast but sneeze right and you blow them up.

Also simply "Lord of Death" come on how awesome is that, because once you have that title people just go yep there goes my flanks.

The first BA list I wrote for myself was with the "Codex Army Lists" book that came in the 2nd Ed. box set. As I recall it consisted of a Captain, 2 Tac squads, Dread, and Terminator squad. Had a lot of fun learning the game with that list. :)
I started this edition as BA. Read a lot about fluff and gameplay about all the chapters I found interesting and settled for BA. I keep my armies themed to preserve the feeling it is my strikeforce I play. My core of 5 DC have seen every battle I can recall, no matter if it's the "best" choice or not. They're here to stay
I came, just about a month ago, over to BA from SW actually. I still play SW but it was kinda getting a little tiresome. Brought the same list most the time, people hated it because it wasn't fluffy (wah wah wah long fangs wah wah wah) and whenever I deviated from the list I always craved a mechanized force. I was considering Dark Eldar but I couldn't stand the nearly non-existant AV and open topped everything so I started an army that had similar nastiness and mobility in a mechanized force and BA were, in my opinion, a front runner in that aspect so here I am!

I started with Angels of Death. Played up to 3rd ed until my army got stolen.

By the time I had money to reinvest in the hobby, we got the White Dwarf codex, and I thought the BAs were on there way out (the memory of Squats was still fresh).

When we got a proper codex for 5th, I had to play again. And now I'm back :D

I started with 3rd Edition. I ran a chaplain with as many Death Company as I could. For those who dont know, you had to roll for every squad in your army to lose guys to the Death Company. A roll of 4 or 5 meant you lose one, a 6 meant you lose one and rolled again. Squad leaders could become DC with PW or PF, jump packs were free so long as your chaplain had one, and he started with 3 + d3 free DC off the bat. We were the first army to be able to take more than three dreadnoughts without needing a certain HQ to do it. Plus you could assault out of rhinos. I miss those days. I cant count how many tournaments people did a double take when I deployed four dreadnoughts. Now it is almost standard for marine players of all kinds.
back in 3rd ed i started with nids. a that tie i was considering another ary and my friend gave me a copy of all the codexes at the tie and i was readin through the and just the blood angel one won e over in the first run through. never looked back since, saying that i started straight with y own succesor as i didnt want to do the same thing as anyone else....
The 5th edition codex is where I started. Well, I haven't played a game yet, but that's because I'm so slow with building these guys. Anyway, I started with Black Templars back in '06, and play them for a couple years. Same codex, same models, same everything. I got bored with it, and dropped the hobby. Well, this year I was craving some miniature gaming and Warhammer is still king at home, so I started looking into it again. I love Powered Armour, so Marines were a must. But after a few proxied games with Codex Marines, I felt like it wasn't my style. BTs were a little worse in 5th, and both SW and DA armies didn't appeal to me. So I read the BA codex, loved the Martial/up close doctrine, the whole "fallen from grace" theme, and the new plastic kits. So, I grabbed myself the battleforce, and it's looking good.
I actually started my first "real" 40k armies with the .pdf codex, partially because it was easy to get to. It managed to begin my obsession with Techmarines, which has haunted me for the rest of my Warhammer career.

I bought the old rules, liked the BA sample army, bought the old codex from EBay, started to put the army together then found out there was a newer codex and it was a downloadable free PDF. So that was the one I started playing with. I prefer the new one now, though the pdf is fondly remembered.

I found it very odd, having played a niche army that the LGS staff often didn't know the rules for (often advising me to buy Stern Guard, Landspeeder storms etc) that once the codex came out everyone was playing with upainted or hastily spray-painted red BA armies and I suddenly sounded like I'd jumped on the bandwagon too.

I painted my first marines as White Scars and Blood Angels as I didn't understand the rules, just bought the models and a couple issues of White Dwarf. Eventually I borrowed a copy or Rogue Trader from a friend of mine and decided that Blood Angels looked cooler (come on, they are red!), so I repainted my few minis to all match. Shortly thereafter, 2nd edition came out, I picked up Space Hulk, which solidified my love of Blood Angels, so I've played them ever since. Largely still using the same RT miniatures.
