I started playing Blood Angels using the 3rd codex after the trial rules for 4ed (commonly referred to v3.5) were released. That was at the time when rhino rush was no longer possible and some local gamers said that Blood Angels were no longer viable as a top tier competitive army so I wanted to prove them wrong. Drop pods were soon released with the 4ed SM codex - I had two armies... One was lots of drop pods (5 man tactical squads and dreadnaughts) with two jump infantry units - Death Company lead by a Chaplain and a full Honor Guard (all the characters - tech adept, Sanguinary Priest, Standard Bearer and sergeant) lead by a Sanguinary High Priest. You used to be able to field Honor Guard as a 10 man unit and each one could take a power weapon - all the characters had thunderhammers or power fists. It was a great army and I think I only ever list four games. The other list was lots of five man tactical squads (las|plas) in razorbacks lead by a Librarian in tactical dreadnaught armor with a squad of ten terminators; I also had a Chaplain to lead my Death Company... It was super shooty with a solid melee counter punch. Death Company were a lot cheaper back then and Chaplains could control the Black Rage. Death Company also counted as a zero point scoring unit!!

I was disappointed when the PDF codex was released but kept playing right into 5ed with the release of the new codex. I switched over first to mechanized army lead by Mephiston (PDF) then switched over to the Dante|Corbulo combo. I have taken a break from BA since this past spring but will eventually pick them back up again as they are my favorite army by far.

I started BA as soon as the Incoming email hit my inbox. I started buying Assault Squad boxes and picked up a few of the characters like Dante and Corbulo while I patiently waited for the new book and models to drop. They have become my main army and I am very happy with my choice. We got a lot of bandwagoners in my area, but I am one of the few who actually stuck with it, and who is not currently playing Grey Knights.

I started 40k, and BA, with the AdobeDex. I was in Iraq when the new Codex released (my wife sent it to me). When I got back, our local gaming group had expanded and I went from being the only BA player in the entire city, to being "oh you play BA too..." to the new fellows. In just a few short months, I went back to being the only steady BA player. I only know of one other, but I've never seen the army fielded.

Here's what I like about the new codex:

Descent of Angels - amazing and fluffy ability

Blood Talons - great addition to an established, unique, dreadnought

Fast Vindicators - 36" of ST10

Astorath - awesome model, fun when paired with a DoA list

More options per slot - tons of FA, tons of Elite, tons of Heavy, just more in every single slot to choose from

Here's what I liked about our last codex:

Dante + Corbs bubble of FNP, FC, and Preffered Enemy

Baal Predator point costs (used to be a staple in my army... now they make an appearance at APOC games)

Death Company that were controllable with a Chaplain

Attack bike spam! - it was the only truly viable FA option, making the decisions easy

Price - point costs were just cheaper!

I remember my first Angels of Death codex, my models were ultra marine cast offs and I spent weeks cleaning and re-painting them (I started modeling with model airplanes and ships), I remember showing my friends models they believed were useless and seeing their jaws drop, then when I used my blood angels to wipe the table with them it was just that much sweeter.

I started playing 40k in 2nd Ed.

My buddy had arrived back from overseas with boxes of 40k stuff- he got me into the game.

However, my secret shame was that I actually started with Eldar.

He was the BA player - who had inherited a lot of his marine stuff from his older brother who was a rogue trader player.

When 3rd Ed came out, we both started playing, but he steadily lost interest and eventually gave up -so I inherited his BA models.

I slowly started adding to his collection, to the point where it was all my own stuff. :)

Never looked back!

I started out in 2nd ed thanks to my cousin. We both bought the box set and he took the Orks (we loved his cardboard cut-out dreadnoughts) and I had the Space Marines. I painted them red because that's what was on the box and I learned that they were called Blood Angels. We used the little army books that came with 2nd ed to write our lists :).

He then introduced me to the Games Workshop shops and the rest is definitely history. And now my red ones go faster than his!

Wow... Angels of Death seems like sooo long ago (14 years ago?!?!?!?!?)

I remember thinking that the BA were the coolest of the space marines and how awesome the fluff was for 40k. 14 years and my love for this game is still as strong as ever. I just recently got my wife to start an army! It all started with that kickass Angels of Death cover art :(

I started with 3rd edition. Once I saw the Baal Predator in WD I was hooked. My boys in purple had many epic battles with the DE in those days. Poor Captain Harker (I used Dante's model, but not his rules) was capture by the vile xenos! We played a series of games where I tried to rescue him, but I was unable to. His head ended up as a trophy on a Talos. It wasn't until 5th edition I would use the Dante model again.

I drift away from them for long periods, but I always come back. This edition I'm trying something new by using an actual successor rather than a DIY. The red is frustratingly slow to do.

Blood Angels originally got me into 40k all those years ago back with the Angels of Death Codex. To this day that book is a great read. Took a break from 40k and got back in and aftera brief side track to orks I came back to my beloved Blood Angels. I knew they had a new codex but started them back up without even reading through it.

PDF Veteran here.

On the topic of bandwagoners, I think there's a difference between such a person and a new player or someone who starts playing because they thought the codex was cool.

Bandwagoners already got bored of our codex and started DE and GK armies as well. Just sayin

I started collecting Blood angels a couple months before Angels of death, but I didn't really play any games until Angels of Death came out so I ticked the Angels of death option in the votey thing.

I still remeber how excited I was when Mephiston first came out! He was a truely terrifying badass back then and his picture in the original codex was awsome! I guess by todays standards he's even more powerfull, I don't think I ever played a game without him or the death company.

I didn't play 3rd of 4th edition (discovered pubs clubs booze and women), but I started playing 40k again not long after 5th ed came out and there was no question in my mind I was going to play Blood Angels, even after getting over the initial shock that they no longer had a real codex just some heretical pdf crap that in no way was dignified enough to represent the forces of the greatest space marine chapter ever!

Now we have a really awsome codex with heaps of options I couldn't be happier, even if we didn't get artificer armour or relic blades!

Even though we may not have the most powerfull 5th edition codex I do beleive we have more great army builds out there than 90% of the 5th codex's and untill I build them all I have no interest in trying any other army!

Still have my 3rd Edition codex. It was already old when I started to collect, paint and play, but it served me well with the inbuilt FC and Moriar the Chosen. When the PDF dex came out, I was kinda shocked how GW didn't give a damn about the Blood Angels, but gave DA a new codex instead. Now I know that we had been lucky in the end.

I started late second/early third. My first purchase was the old 5 marine paint starter set. I painted them red and that began the whole process. I didnt get to trying to play till shortly after codex Blood Angels came out. Didnt get seriously into the game till like 4-5 months before 4th. Been playing pretty heavily (3-4 (6-7 on tournament weekends) games a week most weeks) up until about 6months to a year ago. Now Im lucky if I play 1-2 full games a week. Though its of my own volition. It took me some time to decide whether to actually post here, Im not sure Im really a Blood Angels player any more :/

I started Blood Angels as my first army when I first saw the Angels of Darkness codex, but traded them in for some chaos gits when I saw how cool the World Eaters where. Since then I started a small Blood Angels army during the PDF days but am planning on beefing it up soon since Im rather tired of the chaos dex. What can I say, I love angry/choppy red marines.

BA are what got me into 40K in the first place. A full page spread in WD somewhere in 1995/96. Looking back it was BA army deal back then which I would assume was during C:AoD. I started collecting Space Marines shortly after. I claimed they were somehow related to Blood Angels, but truth is, they didn't resemble BA much due to 1) my lack of knowledge of the BA and my knowledge of 40k fluff in general, and 2) a lack of painting ability.

After that I broke away from the hobby a year or so. But then coming back, I got my first Codex, which was the 3rd Ed BA Codex, and C:SM the next day when I realised I couldn't use C:BA without it.

Another intended BA army fail later, I started Eldar and really started playin attention to my painting ability and started using citadel paints. After that I started a true BA force about 2000/01 which was when I started using proper shading and highlighting.

After that I broke away once again and coming back a few years later I found my beloved BA no longer had a 'real' Codex so with disapoinment started looking at C:SM (the one with chapter traits, was that 4th ed?) and C:BT. Was never really settled with either Codex though. When Space Hulk 3rd Ed came out, I bought a copy strait away purely because it was based on the BA. And when the C:BA 5th Ed was announced, I couldn't wait to get stuck back into BA. And this is where I intend to stay.

5th Edition new recruit

never played a game of 40k tabletop, collected some models and painted them (working my way towards owning the 5th company), but i have the MEME-virus when it comes to fluff and the Blood Angels fluff is the best by far.

I also play a Blood Angel in my Deathwatch RPG

I seen the Sanguinary Guard models last year and having read through the codex and realising you could make an entire army of them... being honest I was sold.

The SG box is possibly the best plastic box that GW produce and can be used for lots of conversion work.
