DC and characters

I was looking at maybe running a DC army for non tournament games and apoc. Does anyone have any thoughts of running DC tycho with a group of DC

with maybe a Chaplin? army size we're looking at is around 2-2.5k a side. Also I know that jump packs are really overpriced, but how does rhinos, stormravens, and the rest work as far as the black rage goes. Does it effect them like it does the troops inside?

DC Tycho is not an independent character nor can he attach to the Death Company in any way; the best he can do is run around in their general vicinity and hope your opponent gets confused. Yes, it's stupid, but GW was very explicit about how useless he is.

If you are running a unit of DC, a Chaplain, Recclusiarch, Lemartes, or Astaroth is basically required or they're just overpriced Assault Marines. In smaller games I go with the Recclusiarch to save points on my mandatory HQ, but Lemartes is probably the best choice because he allows you to do wound-allocation shenanigans and can't be singled out in close combat.

Given that DC (and their attached character) are going to be extremely expensive, I find a Stormraven is the best way to deliver them; it allows you to bring Lemartes along (he has a Jump Pack and thus can't be inside a Land Raider or Rhino) and will get them to the enemy lines very quickly. It does magnify your investment, however, so in a large game like you describe you can expect them to get shot down pretty hard. A Land Raider with a Recclusiarch would probably be a better bet in this case.

Their Rage special rule does not affect the movement of the vehicle in any way; it does, however, sometimes make it difficult to get them back into the vehicle, but remember that if they can't see any enemy units, Rage does nothing to them. (This is mostly useful in reference to a Land Raider, which is big enough to block things off. Stormravens can also be helpful in this way, since they only need models to be within 2" of their rather large base in order to embark.)

Stormravens are a great way to deliver a Dread to the enemy as well; if you have the DC in the 'Raven, give the Dread Blood Fists so that it can handle the "hard" targets (MCs, other Dreads and vehicles, etc) that DC aren't as good at dealing with- flexibility is the name of the game here.

Can't blame you for using the SR, though, it's a very nice kit. Remember to paint anything on the inside you want to do before gluing it fully together, as it will be impossible to do later. (Even just a basic Boltgun Metal + wash on the surfaces and some detailing can look quite nice, as it will always be seen at an oblique angle.)

For my smaller lists I put them with a chaplain in a drop pod. They show up nice and close, draw fire from the rest of the army and hopefully have enough survive to lay the beatdown on the enemy to cover my assault squads. I'm yet to play with it though, so we'll soon see how effective my plan is.
