Schertenleib
Going to be playing a mech heavy game (2000 pts) over the weekend and I was wondering. Do you ever take the additional bolter on your vehicles? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241464-question-for-my-brothers/ Share on other sites

dswanick
If I have the spare points, I'll throw PMSBs on my Rhinos. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241464-question-for-my-brothers/#findComment-2916869 Share on other sites
Arez
If I have the spare points, I'll throw PMSBs on my Rhinos. Ditto. They're pretty good especially against horde armies. Valerian
An extra Storm Bolter on a Rhino isn't really going to do anything for you; it's not worth the investment. PMSBs are useful on vehicles that have other, better, weapons that you want to preserve. In effect, they act as cannon fodder to absorb a 'weapon destroyed' damage result, to keep a better weapon firing longer. You put a PMSB on a tank for the exact same reason that you might put an un-upgraded 18 point Wolf Guard with your Long Fangs. Grey Mage
But Valerian, your opponent chooses the weapon destroyed results effect.... not you. So theyll just take the big gun anyways. Oh damn; did the owning player choose during 4th Edition? That was when I modeled a PMSB on a Predator, and I can't imagine I would have done that otherwise. Disregard my comment then. Tsavong Lah
I only ever spend extra points on transport vehicles when I'm building Apocalypse lists, in which case everything gets upgraded. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241464-question-for-my-brothers/#findComment-2917690 Share on other sites
Simo429
The only reason to take the additional bolter for me is for the extra 'wound' by that I mean you can take more immobolised and weapon destroyed results before getting wrecked. Ryzouken
Pintle mount storm bolter effectively doubles a Rhino's firepower. Whether this is worthwhile to you depends on your preferences. *I* prefer to keep my rolling coffins as cheap as possible to afford more guys in grey with guns. My 1500 point list runs 3-4 Rhino's, which if kitted with Pintle Storm Bolters would be 30-40 points. Two more Grey Hunters, or an extra Long Fang with a missile launcher. Rhino's: roll forward, pop smoke, produce cover saves in turns 3+. On other tanks... well... I'd have to take other tanks first! My triple Land Raider list (@1500 points) doesn't use them... Blacksad
on a land raider crusader: yes. on a Whirlwind: perhaps, on a Vindicator: perhaps. others: most likely no. Grey Mage
If Im taking anything on a whirlwind, at all, its going to be an HK missile. Normally I hate the things... cant hit the broadside of a barn with them.... but the threat of a solid missile shot helps deter some of the fast moving enemies like Piranhas and Landspeeders. red_starrise
For some reason I can never hit a thing w/ storm bolters on either dreads or tanks but that doesn't stop me from taking them when the points warrant. For example in my vanilla list my heavy bolter razorback I put a storm bolter on for the sole purpose of giving me 5 shots from one tank to help protect my honour guard. I've toyed w/ taking an extra on vindicators for when the d-cannon gets taken out, but I never have the extra points to spare honestly. But on the razorbacks it's definitely worth it since it's a 'defensive weapon' & it turns a razorback w/ a weapon destroyed result into a rhino rather than just a battering ram. I've honestly never taken hunter-killers as they're too expensive for a weapon that w/ the way I tend to roll, will miss so it's a worthless investment for me lol. I've thought about it on my iron clad dread but never been able to find the points for that either lol.
