Jade Falcon / Falcon Guard Captain WIP

Recommended Posts

Those of you with fairly long memories may recall I wrote an IA years back (see link in sig)

Well I've finally got around to starting on painting one, I doubt I'll make an army, but painting one has been fun so far!

Here's my latest WIP shot:

I'm entering him into a painting contest at my local GW in Manchester next weekend, so any advice or suggestions to improve over the next week would be much appreciated!

brighten the white of the helmet a bit more, do jewel effects for the helmet lenses (osl never looks quite right for them) add some small chips to the paintjob, increase the difference in the haft of the axe and his armour colour a bit more, and weather the legs, they should be a little dusty from the red soil.

thats my opinion though, the work so far is good and the fact that you're not considering doing a full army sucks.

Nice and simple sceme however it does remind me of the aroura chapter. However Im going to have to agree with brother Lorenzen, and maybe a bit more work on the power weapon. Other than that great stuff. It would be nice to see an army of these guys

Cheers for all the positive feedback guys, as much as I'd love to make an army of these guys I've tried to do it before and it got the better of me!

Here's some more WIP shots following your feedback:

Here's slightly larger version of the pictures.

@Togusa-san - Good spot, yep they did nick the name from Battletech. Good name mind!

hes looking good, but for a painting comp you will want to tidy up the highlights and the heraldry on his knee.. id also consider adding a little bit of fanciness to the blade of the axe.. have you considered making it look more like marble?

the helmet looks as though it could use some neatening up too, in the smaller pics it looks fine, but in the larger ones some of the shadows look a little rough..

and finally if you paint the "ear" of the helm (the little circley bit on the sides) in a dark metallic and add a little more shadow to the tubes on the front, it should make it "pop" a bit more.. though its worth testing any changes like that on a spare head 1st.

WOTF - mate great to see these guys finally come to life!! Yes it has been a long time, weren't these originally the Jade Falcons? Very nice neat crisp paint job. Is the left shoulder paulron custom made? Best of luck with the competition. My only suggestions would be to add some highlights to the eagle head on the axe to make it stand out a tad more & to possibly add some more colour to the falcon on his arm which btw is actually a nice little touch there ;)

Hey fella, the left shoulder pad I sculpted with GS, it's not perfect but I'm happy enough with it!

Lots to do yet on this guy, my main worry is the power axe blade not looking up to scratch.

I also really want to do a veteran's laurel around his helmet, but I'm terrified of making a mess of it!

Cheers all for the input again, more pictures soon.

I know what you mean aboutmessing stuff up, my free hand is awful. Perhaps if your hand is steady enough, you could very very lightly draw the outline of a laurel on the helm before attempting to paint it? Have to say I quite like the shoulder sculpt. I have been toying around with some Miliput at the mo trying to make a Phoenix head for my guys shoulder pauldrons. Look forward to seeing more WIP picts mate!

Mate that is not a half bad effort at all! I have to say, looking at the mini again, i'm quite impressed how much detail you have added to him regarding components & paint-work & yet he does not look 'over-loaded' if that makes any sense to you? The laurel is really nicely done. Possibly if you have the time/patientce/botherance etc.. you could add a tad more scorch marks around the thrusters on the jump-pack and also maybe add a thin line a red alon the outside of the right knee honour marking to make it possibly stand out a tad more? Let us know how the competition goes make :)

That is truly impressive and makes me want to get back into the hobby again...

It would be really cool to see a squad of marines painted up in that scheme. Don't have to go crazy and build an army but to have a squad to complement the single miniature would be excellent.

I'm actually inspired to paint up some Space Marines with your colour scheme... Now, all I have to do is read the IA

Yep, probably will, so I'll keep you posted ^_^ It'll be a while before I get the models I need though, so patience is a must!

And cheers for the recipe
