Anyone ever use a 3D printer for custom bit/shoulderpads?

I'm getting ready to try my hand at making my own custom shoulder pads via GS (tutorial), but then I came across a post on DakkaDakka from Custom-Minis. He can design your 2D shoulder pad for $25 (3D shoulder pad for $50), then upload it to Shapeways for you to buy in bulk. He has a bunch of examples on his web site. The shoulder pads look good, but I hoped the prices was a bit cheaper.

Has anyone used a 3D printer before and how it compares to making your own via GS? I know it'll be more expensive, but it'll also be easier and probably more consistent.

I've had some designs done in 3D and printed via Shapeways (also have my little spot there as well).

Easier, perhaps, as I have a background with 3D. Compared to GS, the [virtual] results can be easily modified...

Price-wise, yes it is expensive, but one has options for various materials (from ultra-detailed materials for my ships, to relatively cheaper but lower detail plastic for aircrafts) ... which Shapeways prices by volume used + startup fee + artist's fee + shipping ...

In the end, it would come down to how the consumer 'prices' his time...

As a sidenote though: how does the price compare to, say, Forgeworld shouderpads?

Cheers!

Hi Shurijo,

I'm glad you were able to see some of my work online. I'm not sure if you've seen but I have recently done a post on the Shoulder Pad process.

If you decide to go with the GS route, I might recommend using a mold method to help with consistency, have you seen

? I've not used it, but I've heard great things from it, and have done GS Molds in the past.

Just priced some up for my Malevolents, approx 30 pads[tac and assault] and........ how fOOking much?!?!?!?

Like Baal dropout says.....Forgeworld is gotta be well cheaper!!

.....and Chapterhouse.

Hi zxyogi,

The pricing for Custom Mini's shoulder pads comes out to $1.25 and $1.50 a pad depending on what material you are using (not including the commission fee).

I just did a quick look at forgeworld and they come out to being $1.36 a pad at the current exchange rate, and Chapterhouse is at $1.00 a pad.

Unfortunately for me, I do not mass produce any of the designs that are created like ForgeWorld and Chapterhouse as 99% of the work is Customer driven and purchased by the commissioning customer. What this allows is for those seeking a unique style for their army a chance to get them instead of the mass produced designs. Yes it is a little more expensive, but they are much more unique.

Thanks

Mike

You'd still need to include the commission price, though. That's an extra 25 or 50 bucks added on there.

It's true, but Forge World isn't going to do any commission items for you. ;)

I didn't feel it was fair to include that in the individual pad price. But for most commissions people order between 20-100 shoulderpads, so you're looking at an extra 1.25 - 25 cents a pad for commissions. Of course if you want more, you can always order more at the pad price from Shapeways without paying any fees again.

From my previous experience in looking for commissions myself. I found that most artist charged around $20+ for a single GS shoulderpad. So I feel the commission prices are fair. I do wish I could bring down the cost of the individual shoulder pads, but the cost of 3D printing those are currently what they are because of new technology. Hopefully this will change over time.

If you have any questions about Custom Minis, feel free to ask, or shoot me an email.

Thanks

Mike
