I would argue that you can only place them 2" infront of the unit as you ahve to add them to a unit all at once not one by one. It isn't like moving. what the player is doing is adding one then another then another. the d3 should be added at once and be within 2" of existing models. the next spider could create d3 that join on another 2" from the ones created in a different unit.

Just some thoughts.

But you're not adding them "all at once." Each Spyder, individually, seperately, and at a different point in time, rolls to create new Scarabs.

If it succeeds, it places the new base into unit coherency with a unit of Scarabs within 6" (IIRC).

So, we have a unit of Scarabs backed up by Spyders:

S X X

...X X

S X X

...X X

S X X

And then the first Spyder adds a base:

S X X

...X X

S X X X

...X X

S X X

And a second Spyder adds a base:

S X X

...X X

S X X X X

...X X

S X X

And then the third:

S X X

...X X

S X X X X X

...X X

S X X

By RAW this is legal since the new bases only have to be placed within unit coherency. :P

I don't play a parking lot in the slightest, I'm really not worried about what Scarabs can do to my army (I use no vehicles), but if someone uses this tactic... :D

I'm not worried about daisy chained scarabs. If a necron player managed to get one swarm far enough out to assault on turn 1 then the back row of scarabs likely wouldn't get within 2" of combat even after pile in, so to do it would weaken your unit and ask for a beating. On top of that, they'll only ever get to tie up 1 unit, whereas if they moved en mass they could tie up multiple units by assaulting over a wide front, which if you play with little armor against them would be the main goal of having the scarabs in the first place. Let em get into combat turn 1... please.
