A fully robed Dark Angels army. Work In Progress.

Well, I finally decided to put up some pictures of my slow work in progress...I'm not very fond of posting pictures because of my lack of photography skill (plus my models look REALLY BAD when photographed)

Anyway, here is my vision of the Dark Angels, in all their glory. Keep in mind it's a WIP.

Any comments and criticism are welcomed. I would love to hear your input.

five regular marines. The guy with no bolter has magnets in his hands to accept either a flamer, plasma, or meltagun, which also have magnets in them.

Veteran squad with combi weapons. Each of their right shoulder pads has unique heraldry.

Interrogator Chaplain with a jumppack...tried very subtle battle damage on this guy, can't really tell in the pics though.

Interrogator Chaplain I made using bits.

Angry looking sergeant with power fist. This is one of the few models that's not fully robed...at least he has a tabard.

Metal sergeant with plasma pistol and chainsword.

Metal sergeant with power weapon and bolt pistol. I used another model of this guy to convert my Azrael.

Sergeant, with a bolter. Looks like he smelled something bad and is pointing at the culprit!

Asmodai, one of my favorite sculpts.

Old school chapter master. I painted him in bone armor...not sure why I did. Should I change his armor to green???

My Apothecary for my command squad that I haven't finished yet.

Metal Chapter Master.

My custom Azrael, I use him because I don't particularly like the original. I just feel he's too small. To make this conversion I used the metal Dark Angel sergeant and cut off his hands and filed down the sword. It's the same model as the sergeant in the previous pics.

This is a comparison between my custom Azrael and the original model. I just dont like the size of the original, although I love the sculpt. Maybe I'll paint him up and actually use him eventually.

Thanks for looking! I still have alot to go...vehicles coming soon!

They look even better than I'd imagined. I love the gratuitous use of the twiddly bits from the veteran sprues and the personal heraldry. Any chance of a group shot?

Do you mind telling us how you made the combi-weapons? I've got a stock of inferno pistols that I intend to use the barrels from but no firm ideas how to go about it.

Thanks for the compliments! I plan on doing a tutorial for making combi weapons, there are many ways to do it. I just start with a regular bolter, depending on what combi weapon I'm going to make. For the melta version, I made two different versions as you can see in the pictures. One has the melta underslung, the other is on the top barrel. It's kinda hard to explain without pics...basically I cut off the barrel of the bolter, glued on the melta barrel, and glued the remnants of a bolt pistol upside down onto the bottom of the bolter after I shaved off the magazine and lower receiver...I'll work on a tutorial, it sounds much harder than it really is.

Good sir, you are an outstanding example of Unforgiven-kind.

That said, I have to say I find the cherub on the banner a bit out of place, considering typical DA iconography. 40K in general isn't too keen on the sanctity of children either. Perhaps you were going with something along the lines of "Angels of Death, but Angels nonetheless"?

@watchcaptainazrael - I actually took the cherub banner design from the codex, on one of the pages there is a black and white ink drawing of the Dark Angels in battle, with tons of banners, deathwing, a big mountain with tons of Dark Angels descending from a fortress...and on the bottom right hand corner, there is an apothecary with the exact banner that I have painted, I copied it exactly. It's hard to see...but I it's there! I couldn't find a banner I wanted for the apothecary, so I searched that painting and found one! It may need to be 40k-ed up a bit, maybe make the cherub into a cyber-cherub type thing with more cybernetic parts for the grimdark feel?

Well, if it's not broken don't fix it. :)

Well, it's indeed hard to spot it, but there it is, and therefore is official and I have performed my daily uninformed braying. I'd say keep it as it is.

I'm certainly not even close to having finished my army...got a few more tactical squads, devastators, and lots of vehicles, along with a whole ravenwing and deathwing army to do...will definitely post up more pics as I move along.

Congrats for going through with that! Am particularly impressed with the effort you put on heraldry, be that on shoulder pads or banners. The old style captain made me sentimental...

Anyway, I think your force would benefit from a group picture!

The battle damage was done by painting the chaplian in an *almost* black basecoat, that way you paint the chips in black and highlight the bottom of the chips in codex grey in a very thin line. Gives a subtle damaged look.

Looking good there bud, and glad to see you went with the heart and a fully robed force :)

Any chance of some pics of the following?

Heraldry on the Vets

The apothecaries Narthecium gauntlet? Interested to see how you did it on the right arm, for reasons best left unmentioned ;) (read: potentially 'borrowing' the idea!)

Cheers

Thanks for the compliments! It's been difficult to do, lots of bits to paint, and so many robes...get's a little boring after awhile.

The apothecary's arm actually came from the old metal Sanguinary Priest model for the Blood Angels. The arm is made to attach at the elbow, so I just took a regular arm, cut it off at the top of the elbow armor, and pinned the arm on. I like it because it's not the "traditional" apothecary arm.
