littlbitz
Well, I'm back, and what a weekend it was. I played in 2 different tournaments, and managed to play 9 games in three days. I took best painted army in both the Friday night veterans Tournament, and the Grand Tournament on Sat and Sun. Finishing 8th over-all out of about 45 players. Friday's tournament was 3 games, I then played a pick up game against "Jawaballs" and then the GT itself was 5 games, 3 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday. Out of 8 Tournament games FOUR of them were against Tau opponents. :D It seems the Tau are coming out of the woodwork, all for the Greater good Broadside spam is alive and kicking... I took some pictures, but have to sort through them. The lighting at the Mechanicon was terrible, so some of them just aren't worth posting. Well, gotta run for now, but I will post some more details later, including some thoughts on my list for those who are interested. Karack Blackstone
I've found a new love for Heavy Bolters with at least one Long Fang pack, depending upon things... Also would really like to see the list that was fielded, and at what points, littlebitz. Nice placement, what exactly did you think when you saw the huge Tau presence? MeatGrinder
I noticed a dip in the number of Tau players since 5th ed came out, interesting to see those little blue pain-in-the-asses making a comeback. I +1 the request for your list, and how your transports faired against the tau lists. littlbitz
It was great meeting you as well Fell Hand! We must get a game in sometime. Meatgrinder, I guess I should be a little more clear about the Tau coming out of the woodwork. I guess I should be a bit more clear, there were 4 Tau players at this event. This is the same as the number of Space Wolf players there. On the other side of the spectrum I counted 7 Grey Knight armies. For those interested here are the other army counts. Blood Angels: 2 Codex Marines: 7 (various chapters) Orks: 3 Daemons: 1 Chaos Marines: 2 Dark Angels: 2 Dark Eldar: 2 Imperial Guard: 4 Tyranids: 2 Necrons: 1 Eldar: 1 Black Templars: 1 Sisters of Battle: 1 Those numbers may not be exact, but they are my best count. It was by sheer chance that I faced three of the four Tau players in the main GT (and one of the players I also faced in the Friday night event) A Tau player also took 2nd place best General at this event. Broadsides were wreaking stuff... For those interested here is the list I took to the Mechanicon for the GT event. HQ: Logan Grimnar Wolf Guard x10: 1. Power Armor, MBs, Power Weapon, Combi-MG (with Scouts) 2. Power Armor, PF, Strm Bltr (with Blood Claws) 3. TDA, PW, SB 4. TDA, PW, SB 5. TDA, PW, Combi-PG 6. TDA, PW, Combi-PG 7. TDA, WC, Combi-PG 8. TDA, PF, Combi-PG 9. TDA, PF, AC 10. TDA, PF, AC Wolf Scouts x5 with 2xPW, a MG, and they all have MBs Dreadnought with Assault Cannon, Heavy Flamer Dreadnought with Assault Cannon, Heavy Flamer Grey Hunters x5 with MG in a Razorback with Twin-Linked LC Grey Hunters x5 with MG in a Razorback with Twin-Linked LC Blood Claws x7 with Flamer, and PW in a Rhino Predator with LC all around Long Fangs x6 with 5x Heavy Bolters 1848 Total. I went 3-2 over the weekend, with both of my losses being to Tau. One of those was a decisive victory to the Tau, with me giving up 14 points, that player went on to win 2nd best General and finished 9th over-all, I also want to note, that I won the roll for first turn, and there were open roads on this board, so wanting to take advantage of that I set up accordingly, only to have him seize the initiative! :o The other loss was against my Favorite opponent of the Weekend, "Scooter" and his Tau list of Doooooommmmm! This game was very close, I was winning the primary objective at the end of turn 5. Rolling we ended up taking a 6th turn, well, I managed to hold out here as well. Then it happened, we rolled for the final turn, and yes we ended up playing a 7th turn. His Broadside fire power proved to be too much even for the might of my Terminators holding the center objective and managed to blast them off. This forced a tie for the primary objective and gave him a win with the secondary (which was VPs) giving him minor victory. The other 3 games were against Dark Eldar, Grey Knights, and yet another Tau and while all 3 were convincing wins for the Space Wolves, none were massacres. I really like the way they score battles at this event, it is very difficult to get a massacre with their scoring matrix, this is evident by the "Best General" only ending the weekend with 76 BPs out of a possible 100 I will try to post some more detailed reports on the individual games, but I am trying to clean up some of the photos I took first. In the meantime, I will post a unit by unit breakdown of my list, and how I feel they performed over the weekend. I should start by saying that I did not practice with this list at all, a mistake I know especially since it is such a different play style than my norm. Anyways, lets break this down. Logan Grimnar: He was a beast all weekend, and did exactly what I needed him to do exactly when I needed him to do it. He spent most of the weekend with his old "Drinking Buddies" the Long Fangs. Some of the highlights for him, he beat down "Vect" that DE Special Character in close combat, and in another game, used his relentless skill for the Long Fangs to advance on a large unit of Grey Knights, blast them apart with Heavy bolter fire from his buds, then charge in and finish them off. Of course there was that game when I rolled two ones in row when trying to make some terminator saves, but these things happen. Logan will naturally lead me to talk about the Long Fangs. A full pack of 6 with 5 Heavy Bolters. Even though I hadn't played this particular list before the GT I have been using Logan with these guys pretty consistently. I have about 12 games under my belt with them against a variety of opponents (standard size games, not including Apoc). I can only think of 1 game out of twelve where they didn't really have an impact on the game, and that was against multiple Land Raiders. These guys rock, the ability for them to have Relentless is crazy good, as is Tank Hunter. In fact, I am going to start assigning a Wolf Guard in TDA to them to increase their staying power even more. Fear the Heavy Bolter!..... The Wolf Scouts. Some people (ok, most people) thought I spent way too many points on this unit. I have to say I am glad I did. I equipped them the way I did to allow them to handle any mission I threw at them, and they performed above expectations. Their kill tally over the weekend included but is not limited to, a Squad of Witches, a Ravager (game 1), a Devil Fish and a Squad of Fire Warriors (Game 2), a Storm Raven and several Grey Knights (Game 3) a Tau Commander, with Body Guard (over 400 points! in game 4) and a Tau Broadside team (Game 5) Now, I don't like to only use points value for trying to place a return value on a unit, but man did they crush some stuff. These guys stay as is, unless I can find the points to increase their numbers, or better yet splurge for a second pack. The Grey Hunter Packs. A bit lack luster, they were designed to take and hold objectives, and use the RBs as fire support. They did their job. Against the Tau, the rides were popped early, and in most games I found the MG to be a waste. At the end of the day however they did their job by taking objectives and attempting to stay out of line of fire. If they did have to engage the enemy, I used them together in an effort to increase their fire power and this worked well. The Blood Claws. These poor guys took a beating over the weekend. Without my Bikers to provide appropriate support, they quite frequently found themselves operating on their own. However, they did exactly what I needed them to do. While they didn't kill a whole lot in 3 of the 5 games, they were a very dangerous target. Nothing like having your 155 point unit absorbing the full brunt of an 1850 army because they don't want you in their lines. Against the Grey Knights they did well, smashing into a unit of Grey Knights and doing what they are supposed to do. Against the Dark Eldar their pack leader kept them on a tight leash and used the Rhino hatch to flamer a group of witches and then charged a unit of Warriors when they were caught alone. The Blood Claws stay. I know Grey Hunters would be better, but I like my Blood Claws. The Dreadnoughts. I struggled against Tau with these guys. Not because they got popped (I only lost both Dreads in one game that I can think of) it was lack of range, and getting close enough to be effective. Hard to say if I have to change out the Assault Cannons. My thought is to swap them out for a Twin-Linked Auto Cannon, not Rifleman mind you, as I'm not giving up my Heavy Flamer or Fist, but the additional range would really help me lay down fire earlier in the game as I advance. I think that's a good compromise. (to do list, 2 new dreads with a twin-linked Auto Cannon on each) The Predator. Awesome! Lascannons all around, blasting away, 13 front armor! whats not to love. Gave everybody headaches, and just blasted away every game. After his performance this weekend, I can hardly remember why I stopped using it. And finally the Wolfguard. This unit was truly the backbone of my army, they advanced and laid down a hail of fire as they approached, killing everything that got close and absorbing more firepower than one unit should be able to ever withstand. It was only in the 2 games that I lost that they were killed to a man, and in one of those games it had to go 7 turns! I have thought long and hard about Cyclones over the Assault Cannons, I think the Assault Cannons are going to stay. They suit the reason I take this pack. I advance and fire. This combined with the 24" range of the others in the pack gives the unit a nice consistent threat range and doesn't confuse the purpose of this unit. I may reconfigure the unit a little to save some points, but other than that I am really happy with them. I think I covered everything in my list. I will try and get some pictures and some play by play up in the next day or so. Hear da Lamentation
Great read Littlbitz. And it is to your credit you did so well with an unusual list, one totally different to your usual AND one which you hadn't gained experience with. For me, this shows something touched on my the "meta list" post, that a good general can do very well without anything approaching a meta list. No RunePriest(s). Only 1 pack of Longfangs and those with Heavy Bolters. Not a missile launcher in the whole army. Blood Claws not Grey Hunters for main assault force. No Fast Attack options - for a Space Wolf player ! Great performance, great original army. Well done mate ! And congrats on wining best painted army too  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241751-back-from-the-mechanicon-pictures-now-up/#findComment-2922957 Share on other sites
Valerian
Well done bitz! Regarding your Dreads, would you consider a Plasma Cannon on each instead of the Autocannons? Same Strength, much better AP, not too uncommon to cover multiple enemy bases. Range isn't as good, but it's 12" better than the Assault Cannons you ran. No worry about gets Hot on a Dread, either. KGatch113
Congrats Ted I just read the results on the Mechanicon boards and came here to congratulate you. I sprained my ankle a couple of weeks ago and have been no crutches...so maybe next year! I did go to Bowie this weekend and played in a tournament there with my other Black Templar army... And I also played against Scooter! He beat me...on the first turn, I deployed a 15 man Crusader squad with the Marshall and Emperor's Champion about 10 inches from the table edge. He killed 1 guy, I took a morale check....11. Then a 12 for fall back....off the table. If that unit had survived, it and my terminators would have wreaked havoc on his lines ( the terminators ran across the board and were in hth by turn 2. ). I ended up taking 3rd place and the prize money paid for the trip B) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241751-back-from-the-mechanicon-pictures-now-up/#findComment-2923218 Share on other sites
Valerian
Why the morale check when he only killed one guy? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241751-back-from-the-mechanicon-pictures-now-up/#findComment-2923351 Share on other sites
littlbitz
It's a Templar thing, they have to make a check as soon as they take casualties if memory serves me correctly. Glad you had a good time and a good showing Kieth, we have to get together sometime soon. Thanks for the comments guys. Interesting thought Valerian, I think when I put my two new Dreads together I will not glue the arms, so that I can try out both load outs and see which I like better. The extra ap2 never hurts. I think I am going to tweak the list a bit, and post it in the Lists section. I just got an Email from the organizers, there was a screw up in the overall scoring. It seems that I also won the Army Domination award for Top Space Wolf player, they are going to be sending me that prize as well in the mail. That means I was "Top Dog" 3 years in a row at that Tournament. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241751-back-from-the-mechanicon-pictures-now-up/#findComment-2923668 Share on other sites
KGatch113
Valerian, Templars have to take a morale check anytime they suffer a casualty. So 1 guy, check. If you fail, you fall back. If you pass, you may make a consolidate move up to d6 inches. I use it to run big units across the table.... Ted we def need to get a game in! Congrats on being Top Dog!!!!! I recommend using rare earth magnets on your dreads so you can swap out arms. www.amazingmagnet.com is where I order from. They have really great customer service as well as the magnets. I usually put one on the chassis and body so I can swivel the dread around :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241751-back-from-the-mechanicon-pictures-now-up/#findComment-2923874 Share on other sites
Natanael
Glad to see you did well with a list like that. I'd never take anything comparable, I am too much in love with my missile launchers and 10-man grey hunter packs, but I am glad someone can do well with it. =) I dont really get the thing with Logan and your LFs, though. I can see why you think Relentless is good on them, but it also either makes Logan miss out on the main battle or put the LFs in harms way, IMO. WOuld you not be better served to keep him with the large TDA-pack? Even with Assault Cannons, Tank Hunter is good. Even better if you go with CMLs in this kind of list were you dont have a lot of anti-tank. The 5 Lascannons are, well, IMO, not enough. Glad you did well, anyway, and that it worked out. I'll keep an eye out for the pics and bat reps. I had remembered the part about surging forward, but didn't realize that a failure meant a fall-back move. Of course, I haven't looked in my Templars codex in many, many years, so I didn't recall that there was a risk. littlbitz
Thanks Nat. The idea with the list was indeed that I could put Logan with either the Large TDA pack or the Long Fangs, depending upon the mission. I just didn't see a mission that presented me with doing it. Was probably a mistake a couple of times, but hey that's how I learn (well maybe, I do like having him run with those Fangs.) I usually use them in close support of the Wolf guard anyway, so if the Fangs do get stuck in combat, or if I need to use Logan's extra attack ability he is close enough to do so. I'm certainly not saying that it's the best use of Logan, but sure is loads of fun to have those guys moving and firing as they make thier way down range. I have been toying with CML, but I just think that the Assault Cannons are so manly looking it's hard for me to give them up. I don't know about not having enough AT weapons. I have been seeing a swing, in the meta at the tournaments I have been attending to have more infantry. While Mech is still present, I don't think it's as prevalent as it was a year ago. That and I really don't want my army to turn into just another list with the same old stuff. I think part of the charm of the list that I used is that it has a little something different in it. Optimized? certainly not, but not unplayable by any means in my opinion. Hopefully I'll get some pictures up real soon... littlbitz
Sorry this took so long, but here are some action photos from the Mechanicon. 1st up we have a couple of pictures from Fridays Tournament, I was using a bike and IC heavy list. That was game three against a foot slogging Death Guard army. Was loads of fun. Here is the Dark Eldar army I faced in Game 1 on Saturday Next you can see my army holding and blasting away at incoming Dark Eldar Logan and what little remains of his Terminator Retinue finishing off the Incubi, after having slain Vect. Next we have the Grey Knights dropping into the midst of my Wolves My Scouts having just chased a Tau commander and his retinue off of the board, now put their sights on a Broadside team. My army pushing onto the center objective, in the end the game would just last too long... My Scouts wreaking havoc again... Ah, in this game I take the objective and the Wolf Guard withstand the torrent of fire. Sorry for the lack of play by play, but the room was dark and the pictures didn't turn out as well as I would have liked. I do have a 1500 point Tournament tomorrow. Hopefully I will be able to do some better battle reports from that event. littlbitz
Truthfully Hendrik, I took that model as my Wolf Guard because that's what I had available. In the end however, I was very pleased with his performance. 9 power weapon attacks on the charge has served me well. Eyeslikethunder, my Biker and TWC list was constructed with the Friday Night event in mind, so it wasn't a list to be taken seriously at all. What follows is an approximation of the list: HQ: Wolf lord on a Thunder Wolf with a Frost Blade, Storm Shield, Runic Armor, Saga of Warrior Born, Wolf tail talisman HQ: Wolf lord on a bike with Thunder Hammer Storm Shield, Runic Armor, Saga of the Bear, Wolf tail talisman HQ: Wolf Priest on a bike HQ: Wolf Guard Battle leader on a bike with a Frost Blade 2x Grey Hunter Packs with Wolf Guard and a variety of gear (kitted out but foot slogging) 2x Biker Packs Thunder Wolf Cavalry unit of 3 Just a fun get in your face and punch stuff list for some light Friday gaming.
