Decals + Microset

Ok, I have a question about our horribly-shaped decals.

Does microset really help them actually conform to the shape of shoulderpads, or should I try to get really good at freehanding our chapter badge?

Cheers!

Yes. (read this tut, I tried to make it funny):

For my wing transfers to a marine shoulderpad that will try to fold and kink I make a couple relief cuts to let the extra bits of the transfer lap up over each other instead of folding. Don’t overdo it because you are weakening the transfer…

Somebody please put up the B&C transfer tutorial... (I know you guys have got one...)

Hello,

You'll need both Micro Sol and Microset. I use them both, and to be honest, the results are amazing. Micro-Sol softens the decal so it forms better, and Micro-Set locks it in place.

Give it a try. You won't be disappointed. Well worth the $$

I use the Revell brand softener and get good results.

I also paint around the edge of the decal to reduce the shiney bit.

@Sagan - Should I buy a few pages off of FW? Are they that much better?

1st, Not Sagan... ;)

I would call the GW ones a "Beginner" set of decals, and the FW ones "Advanced". One of the first differences is the FW ones are much thinner. While that makes them conform more easily, it makes them that much harder to move around and less forgiving of mistakes. Another difference is that the GW decals have a definate edge just outside the printed area but the FW ones, (like self printed transfers) the whole page is a transfer and you will need to score the top layer where you are holding it with your tweezers otherwise you will be trying to get it off the paper while still holding on to the transfer bit.... Tear waiting to happen. On the other hand the FW set has some stuff you cannot find on the GW pages Specifically a full set of numbers in the DA style where the GW set only has 2, 3, 5, & 6. A mix of both pages is what I am using...
