New to wolves, what to build...

So I'm new to SW and I've got 3 packs of wolves. I'm trying to decide how to build them out, model wise. Altogether I've got 10 WG terms, 2 rhinos, 2 rune priests, a 5 squad of sniper scouts, and 3 GH boxes. I'm wondering if I should convert some of them over to LF or not. Maybe do 3 squads of 8 GH, and a 6 man LF squad.

Any ideas would be helpful as I'm coming from playing 'Nids. Marines have a lot more choices in squad layout than nids do so I'm a little overwhelmed.

Well Welcome to the fang.

Are the 3 packs the Space Wolf pack box or the Space Marine squad box?

If they are the Space Wolf pack boxes:you cant make LF with the box

I say get a box of Devastators and magnetize the weapons and put wolfy stuff on the Devastators.

and the build would be dependent on what style of play.

for get in your face and do alot of melee:make the squads Blood Claws

for sitting at the objective/killing from medium range:GH

If you dont know what style make small pack and try both out to see what you like

3 Wolf Guard (pack leaders and/or counts-as WGBL/WLs)

18-20 Grey Hunters

5 Blood Claw/Skyclaws (magnetize the backpacks and order some GW jump packs to switch out whenever)

Reserve 2-4 complete models worth of bits to mix'n'match with a Devastator box when you get one, so your Devs will actually have SW bling to look like Long Fangs.

thanks a bunch guys. I'm trying to start out with a decent 1k point list. I know this isn't the list building forum but its more about what to make with what I have available.

I like the idea of smaller squads of GH, ala 6-8 with a WG pack leader with each.

I don't have points worked out just yet but how about something like:

4x 6 man GH squad:

-1 with melta

-WG term with chainfist

-motw

-standard

for basic troops setup

the 3 boxes are SW packs for GH, BC, or WG in PA

that leaves 6 models still on sprues for customizing

or I could run 3x 10 man GH squads with the bonus Special weapons. 2 squads in Rhinos and 1 footslogging with the 10 WG termies. I dunno....so many options!!! lol

You could split the 3rd pack into 5, keeping one half on the back line to protect any objectives in your deployment and/or protect less mobile units and send the other half to babysit any objectives taken by your larger packs.

First of all, you will have to look at the rest of your army before you decide how to run your boys. Generally speaking smaller packs have better flexability with keeping objectives, but less flexability for staying due to casualities. Plus the additional need for Rhino/Rasorback hulls. Generally, the special weapon isn't a big deal since the wolf guard provides a leadership boost and a combi melta anyway (and often, the first round of shooting in the 12 inch range is the primary time you would want two melta anyway, since you are likely to be in combat for most rounds afterwards.) Just got to see what your army needs, though Grey Hunter spam with some support is always a good start until you get used to the game.

But generally; Combat upgrades are good on 10 man squads or slightly less (Wolf Guard or otherwise) but on 5/6 man squads they tend to rack up the cost, so the standards are only really valued on large squads where the sheer number of dice makes the reroll of 1's possible.

Generally, big squads for big combat, middle object holding and tarpitting, smaller/heavily damaged squads for more shooty, backfield objective or backupy units.
