Ultramarine Blue - How do you do it?

Hi guys,

After checking out the GW articles on how to paint Ultramarines, I've noticed that Ultramarine Blue is far lighter than the finish the Ultramarines get in the books.

I'd prefer a darker finish and was wondering if anyone uses a different recipe for darker ultramarines?

Would Ultramarine / Regal blue do the job?

Mordian Blue (foundation paint) might be a decent paint to use as a base? I paint my Crimson Fists and the Mordian blue is very similar to the Regal Blue but just a tiny bit lighter, and being a foundation paint would work well over any under-coat colour.

What about using the painter to suggest a paint colour?

I've just started painting Ultramarines and I'm using the following method-

Undercoat - Black

Basecoat - 1:1 mix Chaos Black/Regal Blue

1st layer - 1:1 mix Regal Blue/Ultramarine Blue

Highlight (around edges/raised areas) - Ultramarine Blue

Edge Highlight - 1:1 mix Ultramarine Blue/Space Wolves Grey

I've only painted one Ultramarine so far, which can been seen here

Thanks guys that's been really helpful.

Crazychib - that's exactly what I was looking for!! Have you managed to get any more Ultras done yet?

Glad I could help.

I have started on my Black Reach Terminators. I'll post some pictures as I complete them, but progress will be slow as I can only paint a couple of nights a week.

I might be a bit late to the party, but here's my take on the blue, small step-by-step in the thread.

I know the paints aren't GW (except for highlight of ice blue and leviathan purple wash) but it should give you an idea.

Dan Sly its never too late to join the party!!!

I saw your WIP thread a couple of days ago and I'm really impressed so far! I'm planning a darker finish than yours but I love your technique. Hope you don't mind if I try it out for my marines when I finally get the chance.

It could be a while before I get around to it however. I'm building a true scale army and hit a snag with replicating shoulder pads. I've just got some instant mold though so with a bit of luck I'll have it sorted and get some piccies posted soon.

Keep up the good work Dan Sly and I'm looking forward to see more of your work. Please post it up soon.

haha, that's good to hear!

Ah thanks mate, only just getting back into the hobby and really glad to be back, sure go for it! If you want a more detailed idea of how it's done feel free to ask! The last image I posted is closest to how they are in real life, the others are a tad light, but ah well. I want a fairly high contrast look to them but with "realistic" shading if that makes sense? So I pushed the colours lighter to help show that.

I'll be interested in seeing that! truescale always tempts me. Good luck with it.

I'll try and get some more up tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Im still painting in an old school way so heres my recepie

Undercoat matt black (Halfords matt black primer)

Spray Mordian blue as a base coat

Spray from above with pure ultramarine blue

Wash with thinned Azurman blue wash

Highlight with Ultramarine blue

Edge highlight with Ultramarine blue/white mix's

Ive also started to wet blend using a wet pallet.

Ok, now I'm really late joining the party...

I really like your colour scheme crazychib. I've bought Black Reach (merry christmas!) and I wuold like to paint ultramarines.

It's like...10 years that I don't paint anything (gulp!), and I've always painted with colors-straight-from-the-pot (no diluted colors...heresy!).

So crazychib...some hints about water percentage? Like 1:1:1 chaos black/ultramarine blue/water.

I know that it's not a "math" thing, but some hints will be really appreciated!

...of course not only from crazychib.

Thanks to everyone!

...and a happy new year!

Hi

I rarely use paint straight from the pot, I only add water if the paint looks too thick. Too thick, and it will obscure small details. Too thin, and it will run into the crevices. Saying that, there are alot of good painters that paint straight from the pot.

It's not an exact science, just what I feel is the right consistency. Most of the time I would say it is 1:1:1 (paint/paint/water), but it depends on the paint. It is something you will learn, the more you paint.

Have a look through the tutorial section and check YouTube for some great painting tips.

Hi!

I know that at most it's a matter of practice, but a good starting point hint it's always appreciated! I've found a couple of tutorials on youtube as you suggested. I'll watch 'em this evening. And then start various tests.

Sooo... did you do some new minis since November? Any photos? I'm courios...

Thanks!

There is a completed Terminator (from Black Reach) in my gallery and I am about half way through a second Terminator. Painting progress has been slow due to work - Working in retail during the festive season sucks!
