Long Fang Loadout

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I'm a bit new to SW and 40k. I tried to play about 15 years ago, but being 14 and no job was no dice (hah, pun). Anyways, I'm playing SW's and I'm trying to think of a different load out for LF's other than just ML spam. ML spam would work fine, but I'm looking to mix it up. I'll be playing mostly IG, Necrons, and Orks.

I was thinking of going with a combination of ML's and Heavy Bolters? All of my Grey Hunter's will be sporting melta's along with my WG sporting combi-melta's for vehicle popping. I don't know enough about Necrons to know if their armor is took much for the heavy bolters.

Basically, I'm trying to find a nice mix of LF weapons that's versatile. I was thinking of going 2 ML, 2 HB, and 1 PC with the Long Fang leader using a Plasma Gun.

The trouble with heavy bolters is that they are useless against armour.

A missile launcher can take on any AV in the game, you'll need to be lucky vs AV 12+ but you can still do harm.

And if you do face infantry you can still fire frag which in my experience do almost as much damage as heavy bolters.

Also by mixing ranges you effectively negate the range of the launchers in a mixed squad because you lose out on the heavy bolters firing.

In summary:

Missile launchers can do both anti armour and anti infantry at long range but are not as good vs infantry as heavy bolters.

Heavy bolters are a little bit better against infantry but you lose out on range and anti armour firepower.

So you really are best off taking all of the same weapon and based on the fact that you lose only a little bit of anti-infantry power while gaining anti-armour shots you are best taking all missile launchers.

I'm not familiar with the SW dex but I think I'm right in saying that HB's and ML's are the same price? If so then it really is a non brainer.

If you want a dedicated anti-infantry unit then a mix of plasma cannons and heavy bolters will do you proud.

It's all about synergy. Which load out will fit the rest of your army's style...

All MLs is cheap, cheerful and even AV14 should get worried when 15+ missiles are coming towards it...

Having said that, 3xML+2xLasCannons is a pretty solid combination, and with split fire very versatile.

I like the idea of 3xPlasma Cannons+2Multi-Melta, but I fear that would be too situational.

If you're facing a horde army, 5+Heavy Bolters would be damn cheap and stupidly devastating I should think.

So, if you want something purely to win, go 5xML, something versatile without breaking the bank would be 3xML+2LC (Or vice Versa), and IMO for sheer cool, 5xHB.

Personally I'm making 5 heavy bolter fangs right now :-)

And don't forget that you can give a Wolf Guard Terminator armour and a Cyclone Missile Launcher and stick him with your fangs...

And if you do face infantry you can still fire frag which in my experience do almost as much damage as heavy bolters.

The heavy bolters are 5 points cheaper than MLs.

Personally I like heavy bolters against infantry that arent' so plentyful that frag rounds might scatter off them completely.

If you have a green tide or a bug swarm, then MLs might be better than HBs.

It's all a matter of dice luck given that a lucky frag round might get you three models with a strength 4 hit and a heavy bolter has 3 S5 shots...

Against a tide or swarm I'd probably prefer MLs, but against SM/Necrons/Eldar I think HB would be good.

i find my grey hunters carry enough anti personel fire so i take 3 xml 2x lc in my long fangs to soften up transports, and i use speeders vs tanks typhoon and mm works a treat but then i use blood claws as assult troops freeing my grey hunters to fill that roll

i also run one pack of 10 grey huntrers with 2 meltas and a fist to hunt dreads

hope this helps

Should probably put this in list, but this is the loadout I was thinking about:

HQ:

Rune Priest, Chooser of the Slain

Rune Priest, Chooser of the Slain

Elite:

Wolf Guard, Combi-Melta, Powerfist x3

Troops:

Grey Hunter (x5), Melta, Mark of the Wulfen (x3)

Transport:

Razorback x3

Heavy Assault:

Long Fangs x5, Missile Launcher x4, Flamer

Long Fangs x6, Heavy Bolter x5, Flamer

I gave the Long Fang leaders flamer's just because I had 16 points to spare.

5th Edition is considered the Mech addition. I would be very surprised if there were ever a player that didn't place atleast one transport or heavy support vehicle on the table. Due to that, and to counteract armoured troops (TDA marines, battlesuit tau, etc), having melta guns in the majority of your troop choices is nearly manditory.

However, deployment strats and simple numbers of melta vs amount of tanks/TDA can mean that your meltas just won't be enough. For that reason, I never field the table without atleast one lascannon Long Fang. Some people would prefer an all ML Fang pack(s) combined with lasplas razorbacks, but then that falls under missilespam and razorspam, both of which bore me.

Another way I like to go off the beaten path is with my smaller pack of Fangs taking to the middle field instead of resting on their laurels. I take 3x Fangs (2x hvybolter, 1x mmelta), stuff them in a razor, and go up the middle for some tank-hunting and close-range troop support. It's not exactly practical, in particular to the tourney circuit, but it's a lot of fun when your opponent sees that mmelta in proximity of their gunline.

No idea what else 16 points will buy in a SW army, but literally anything else will be more use than flamers in a devastator squad!

Yeah, I'm not sure where to really sink those 16 points. It's not enough for another Long Fang since you have to replace their weapon. I guess I could give the Rune Priests Wolf Tail Talisman's to improve their invul save? Dozer blades on the Razorbacks?

On that thought, why not stick the in a Rhino? That way they can shoot out of the hatch and pant to the wind so they don't even have to disamount. XD

Missile Launchers are great, but I never leave the Fang without a couple Plasma Cannon on my Fangs. Just last week a single 'hit' from a Fang with a Plasma Cannon netted me an entire Sanguinary Guard plus attached Sanguinary Priest. I delete his premier assault unit and the only thing in his army that can hope to threaten my Wolf Guard with a single shot. A Plasma Cannon gives you a capability that almost no other weapon in the inventory can: high-strength, low-AP, blast at a decent range.

Interesting re: Plasma. I've never really used it because I've always been scared off by the "Gets Hot!".

Thought about running them in an army with 2 Dreads, though.

It's pretty rare to lose someone to Gets Hot, although it is highly annoying when you do. 1/18 chance with every shot. Over the long run means you'll lose a each Plasma Fang once every 3 games (assuming 6 turn games). Each will easily make up their points every turn they live, to offset those losses.

You could upgrade your three Wolf Guard's Powerfists to Thunder hammers...

I do on occasion.. I'm just tired of rhinos. They have no flare.

I do this often in my lists - a pack with 2-3 HBs, and 1-2 PCs for medium range firepower with my Greys. I've also never seen them as wasted points in a tourney. Although I usually give them a Razorback, I wish RBs had a Fire Point : 1.
