Best way to build Death Guard?

So, I've wanted to build a Pre Heresy/Eisenstein "loyalist" branch of the Death Guard. I've considered using the SM codex and picking up either a special character to give them traits of some sort (maybe a Kantor count as) or something along those lines. I haven't really dealt with the SM codex much, and so I'm here looking for advice. The army will be a majority of foot sloggers, or a half drop pod army, but I'm not sure if that fits with the fluff of how the DG fought.

Also, any advice on how to paint the two primary colors would be great! I've seen kind of a Commando Khaki-ish style color used for the "unpainted" part of the armor, and I figure Dark Angels green would work for the green.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

DG are all about foot sloggers. They form a line of fire, take the enemy attacks like a stonewall on their lines, and when the enemy falls back, they advance slowly methodically destroying all in front of them.

Make use of lots of tactical squads w/rhinos, heavy armor to support your firebase, and don't forget a good commander like Typhus or Garro or even Mortarion himself!

There was a tutorial on Bells of Lost Souls on pre heresy Death Guard that was done very well, but unfortunately I couldn't find it. If you are interested in transfer sheets, they have them there as well.

For the colour scheme i'd use Catachan Green and Astronomican Grey as the base colours.

As you've said, the DG were primarilly an infantry force (tactical marines, Sternguard, terminators). So i'd limit but not entirely ignore transports. Maybe have a Landraider to transport a Terminator squad. As for Characters to lead them, Lysander or Kantor would be most appropriate, in my opinion.

I would go for a pretty cold/neutral white, with grey shading rather than the brownish you often see on Death Wing. And for the green I'd vote for lighter than dark angel or "military"-green. Mostly becaus its easier to work in alot of cotrast in brighter colors wich makes for bigger impact on the gaming table. Maybe have a look at the cover art for flight of the Eisenstein for inspiration....
Thanks for the advice! Im picking up the SM codex today, and after I read flight of the eisenstein, ill have a much better grasp on how the death guard fight. Ill definitely have a count as character to give them stubborn. Most of my squads will be foot slogging, and my stern guard in rhinos.

If you use Kantor or any special character, you must also use their equipment provided or else it doesn't make it 'them' anymore. If we could mix-n-match rules with models it would be fun but would not be fair.

However, you can, with some very heavy modifications, model a power weapon to be a counts-as powerfist. Your opponent would have to be ok with it though.

Well, death guard are known for their relentless bolter fire, so all assault weapons would be very anti fluff, which is the reason I'm doing this army. I could run them as space wolves, but I would rather not.

I'm not sure about that. When it mentions their "relentless bolter fire" i assume that a more accurate description would be "relentless small arms fire". The bolter is the standard armament of the Astartes and "Small arms fire" doesn't sound as impressive so we get "bolter fire". I'm sure the death guard would make ample use of special weapons. I you have a look at the Plague Marine entry in Codex CSM they can take two special weapons but no heavies. Obviously plague marines are not necessarily from the DG legion but i like to think their unit entry gives a little insight into what would be suitable. This is, of course, just my personal opinion :)
