maturin
Hi everyone, I've been working on my Thunderfire cannon here - I had to assemble one myself as I've entered a tourney in 2 weeks and my FLGS will take about that long to order a metal one in...so I dove into my bitz box this weekend. One of my complaints about the GW model is that it's always looked a bit....weenie to me. It looks like it'll fall over the moment it's fired, and the scale just seems off for what's supposed to be an artillery piece. For my model I wanted to bulk it up a bit - but maybe I've overdone it. What do you guys think - is this monstrosity too big? I can cut down the barrel length, but can't do much about the height or base other than starting over. http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i389/jchen101/Thunderfire%20Pics/IMG_5822.jpghttp://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i389/jchen101/Thunderfire%20Pics/IMG_5826.jpg http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i389/jchen101/Thunderfire%20Pics/IMG_5827.jpghttp://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i389/jchen101/Thunderfire%20Pics/IMG_5828.jpg I need to credit Brother Talhydras, whose cannon I used as the basis for mine (see thread http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...;hl=thunderfire) All comments and suggestions are extremely welcome! Primarch83
That......Is.........Awesome! It is alittle big compared to the normal thunderfire, but I like it and wouldnt mind you running it. You can see the enemy with it better, And the baddies missiles and autocannons can see it better. Win, win cheers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241990-thunderfire-conversion/#findComment-2924338 Share on other sites
Olis
I wouldn't necessarily say it's too big. It's certainly a fair bit bigger than a regular Thunderfire cannon but I don't think that's cause for starting again. Perhaps it might seem less beefy if you reduce it's height somehow, maybe trim some excess off of the gun mount. Brother Nihm
Think of this as the MK I. Play a few games with it and if you find that your opponent can get rid of it too easily due to its size, then revise the design and make a new one? Doghouse
I think it looks great. I think that any slight advantage that you might gain from the height of the guns would be balanced out by the fact that it is a much bigger target. I say run with it like the others say. Very nice conversion. :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241990-thunderfire-conversion/#findComment-2924362 Share on other sites

Studio Silvernale
There is no such thing as "too big" in 40K. Overkill isn't an option, its a requirement! =D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241990-thunderfire-conversion/#findComment-2924490 Share on other sites
Subtle Discord
It's definitely been eating it's Wheaties, but looks great! As it's already been said, you gain line-of-sight, but so does your enemy. And, too big? Is there such a thing in 40K? Too many point to be practical, maybe, but never too big. maturin
Many thanks for your support and suggestions! I agree with the "no such things as too big" sentiment. However, my techmarines did a little tinkering overnight in the interest of not having my opponents in the tournament cry foul (not likely as the local crowd is very pleasant)....I present to you Mk. II. It turns out cutting out just a bit of vertical height from the mount and simplifying the base really makes quite a difference. What do you think - I saved all the bitz so I can go back to Mk. I easily... http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i389/jchen101/Thunderfire%20Pics/IMG_5832.jpghttp://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i389/jchen101/Thunderfire%20Pics/IMG_5836.jpghttp://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i389/jchen101/Thunderfire%20Pics/IMG_5835.jpg Again, thanks for the comments brothers and keep 'em coming! Olis
Result, I'd say. I think the reduction of height has done just the job. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241990-thunderfire-conversion/#findComment-2924766 Share on other sites
Talhydras
I need to credit Brother Talhydras, whose cannon I used as the basis for mine (see thread http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...;hl=thunderfire) Thanks for the reference... :) I just saw this thread and thought that it looks a lot like mine. Great work, I really like how the treads and the stabilizers turned out! What are you gonna use as techmarine? The normal one in a servo-harness or do you intend to scratch-build it as well? maturin
Thanks, Talhydras. Props for the inspiration! I've bought a finecase Techmarine with servo-harness, so I'll probably end up using him in the interest of time. There's a lot of painting to do before next weekend and I'm an awfully slow painter, with not too much free time. I'll post pics when it's all done. Lexington
Wow, that thing is amazing! Well-done. Curiosity, by the by - where'd those stabilizers on the back come from? maturin
Wow, that thing is amazing! Well-done. Curiosity, by the by - where'd those stabilizers on the back come from? Many of my modifications to Talhydras's plans, including the stabilizers, came from the Imperial Bastion kit (and specifically from the Icarus-pattern lascannon that sits on top). You'll see many of the parts on GW's website where the show the sprue. The treads are leftover from an old chimera kit. Gun barrel extensions are IG mortars. maturin
Update - I actually painted this baby a long time ago, but neglected to post pics. Here's the finished product! Gamewise, it's been an amazing unit on the tabletop in 6th. http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i389/jchen101/Thunderfire%20Pics/fd5b4f1e-3cb6-4f3d-98bd-774057c8a939.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/241990-thunderfire-conversion/#findComment-3434868 Share on other sites
