Fulgrim: Painting with 'waste'

Minor spoiler alert for 'Fulgrim'...

Ok I want to apologise for posting quite a disgusting topic, especially as my first one in this section of the forum, but I need to know: on page 266 of 'Fulgrim' (which I'm currently reading for the first time), the artist Serena D'Angelus is experimenting with 'esoteric fluids and substances of her own flesh' on the painting she is currently working on. She has already tried working her own blood into her piece, admiring the results.

What troubles me is that, and I quote, 'Her tears rendered her whites luminous, her blood the reds to fire, while her waste gave her shades of deep darkness she had not previously imagined possible.'

....Am I to understand she used her own faeces in her painting? Apart from being disgusting, doesn't that give the painting a horrible stench? Thus rendering it imperfect?

I just wanted to know what other people thought, I know it's not a major issue lol but I find it kind of gross considering the beauty of artworks mentioned so far.

Considering her descent into madness, yes, I took it as her use of feces. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and considering her mentality at that time, it probably makes a lot of sense...to her.

From what I remember of her other `sources` of materials, and if I remember correctly she lets her own personal hygiene slip, her quarters do probably give off a nasty whiff, yes.

(-Minor spoilers if you haven't finished the book yet, but it's common knowledge what happens-)

You're correct, mate, but this is exactly what Slaanesh is all about. The fact that no normal feeling, pain, love, appreciation, etc, can provide enough stimulus to provoke a good reaction.

This is why Noise Marines exist. They use those Sonic weapons not only to kill their foes, but to nearly burst their own eardrums because the sheer amount of pain there can provoke the smallest amount of response/feeling from them.

Serena there is falling under the influence of Slaanesh. Normal colours, paints, cannot provide the normal sense of completeness a non-Chaos-ed artist would feel. Blood, tears, 'waste,' all are extreme things, which can pierce the fog of dull feeling Slaanesh followers give to themselves, by experiencing everything possible.

Search for 'Slaanesh Artwork', and you'll find many drawings (Slaanesh, it seems, is popular with the art world...) that illustrate this. Demons of Slaanesh are supposed to be 'perfect', but they're far from it...

EDIT: Made my point clearer, typos, etc...

Yeah, I took it to mean faeces as well.

She was losing her mind and, as the posters before me have said, needed to "feel" something since normal things were becoming dull to her.

As a side note, you have to remember that the EC's ideal of perfection was being twisted and mutated during this, affecting the artists as well. Thier ideal of perfection was being replaced with the seeking of pleasure and ecstasy, meaning that where they would've been repulsed before hand by the painting, they would now see it as a shock to the sense and thus a work of art.

Thank you for the quick replies,

Ok, that makes sense. In a way only 40k can. I guess I need to understand that my idea of perfection is clearly different from the followers of Slaanesh! Can't wait to finish this book, I'm guessing painting with poo is the least of my worries in terms of hideous acts carried out for the Prince of Excess.
