GK Dreadnought or Ven dread

Seahawk

Recommended Posts

Due to my recent winning of a second storm raven for my GK force, I've been exploring the idea of a dreadnought. Now, I'm looking at the model options and the two that stick out best are the GW Venerable Dreadnought for $44, or the GW GK Dreadnought for $66. Sure I get more bitz with the Ven dread box...but the FW version has "that look" that I really want. Plus, I'm not just going to be a tool and stick autocannons on it <_< Psycannon and flamer all the way! <_<

Has anybody built either of these kits? Experiences? Warnings (esp. with the FW version)?

I got one of the FW Vens, with Psycannon and storm bolter to make the most of psybolt ammo (my second will have an incinerator and a TL incinerator and he shall be Brother Trogdor) and I can say it is a beautiful model. So much more poseable than a normal dreadnought, thanks to the jointed CCW and moveable head, I managed to make a really dynamic looking pose. If you're after a good, impressive model, I heartily recommend it.

but psy ammo doesnt work on psycannons . you take an upgrade for just the SB 0_o ?

the FW GK trade is an awesome model , defintly worth buying just to get the hull. Personaly I wouldnt transport him in a SR [and if I did I would arm him with a MM not a psycannon] , but that doesnt matter much anyway , because DCA +crusaders are a good enough assault unit by themselfs ,GK are one of the few armies which are good enough to run one or two sub standard units.

I've got both FW GK dreads, and there really is nothing to them modelwise. Should I go for a third, I'd probably go for their Contemptor Pattern dread - and a variety of weapon options to use it both as psyfleman support or close range venerable :)

@ Jeske:if you want a psycannon equipped dread, you need to get an assault cannon and add psybolts :P

A friend of mine has both forge world grey knight dreads and they look pretty, my only issue with forgeworld is that I'm not that big a fan of working with resin, but I'm starting to get used to it :tu:

How about the blood angels dread? the libby front plate suits grey knight dread's pretty well.

I would be my impression that chaplainmeliadus is using the Psycannon arm because an Assault Cannon with Psybolts is the same stat line as a Psycannon. I would not mind this setup at all IMO. I think nurglez is being too literal and focusing on his arm preferences instead of the real answer of which model.

P.S. It is my personal preference to use the block style body instead of the head. I also like VEN AC/SB/PA or STD TLHF/HF/PF for alternatives to 2TLAC/PA also Trogdor is perfect.

I just like confusing people with my outside-the-box thinking

Yes, the psycannon arm is for an Assault Cannon + Psybolt Ammo. Rules-wise this is exactly the same as a psycannon, so basically it's going to help me remember that it IS strength 7 instead of 6...plus it looks better.

Thanks for the opinions on the FW parts...the biggest thing I've gotten from them is a sheet of brass icons, so this is new territory for me.

but if your not after str 8 weapons then it doesnt make much sense 4str7 shots even with rending its still not good enough anti tank [unless you have 3-4 rifle man in support , but it doesnt look like your doing that] . and horde or anti matter is covered through the DCU/crusader unit in the SR . a MM or a las helps to maxmize the fire power .you already have a MM and las on the SR . unless your runing it with AC but then I dont realy understand the set up . rifle man would work better if you want anti rhino/anto horde .

the looks per se dont matter , because there is counts as [unless your also runing NDK with psycanonons , but that wouldnt make sense at all] and with that you can make the weapon anything that is good.

That's why my current 1500 list already boasts 2 TL psycannon, 2 TL lascannon, and 2 TL multimeltas, and that's just the vehicle-mounted stuff. I've never had a problem with light-heavy armor in the dozen games I've played. As I mentioned, I'm decidedly against using dreadnoughts as autocannon platforms; that's so uncreative!

As if it could be any more obvious we are into this hobby for different reasons  :D. The decision on which model to use is purely aesthetic. Yes I could "counts-as," but I don't need to.

Not that this is a tactics thread either ;). I'm only looking for members' experiences with building the FW dreadnought.

I am currently assembling/painting the FW GK dread. I like the look of the FW SM Ven dread, but if yer fieldin' a GK army, why not choose the GK-specific option? Personally, I like the glaive the GK dread comes with. You can "model" a venerable (elite option of the FOC) with a few custom add-ons to the mini (i.e. purity seals + inquisition bits).

I've read many threads advocating the autocannon x2 kit option, but aesthetically, I prefer the CC kit, since GK are fluff-wise a close-up assault force, by design. My GK dread has an assault cannon (4 S6 Rend).

No matter which mini you choose, have FUN! :D

How was it to clean up, put together, and so on?

Almost perfect. Very little in the way of flash, the parts mostly fitted smoothly (see below) and some of the best moulding I've seen in a FW model. Sometimes, especially on larger kits, I've had parts where it seems the halves of the moulds didn't quite fit straight, but none of that. The only trouble I had was with the power plant; I had to modify the area on the body where the four pipes at the bottom of the plant sit against the it by filing away some resin, in order to attach it, but that's not something you can see once the model is assembled.
