Project: Honour Guard

Progress has been made on the fifth member of the unit, the scary, double-bitted axeman:

The brown areas will end up gold. I use that brown base to "warm" the underlying hue when I paint gold over it. It works, trust me. Go paint somehting black, and something red-brown, and then apply gold over each one. The brown undercoated area will be easier to cover and have a warmer hue.

The axe is from the Sanguinary Guard kit, but with the spiky things chopped off the top. I figured those would be a foam tray nightmare. The head is from the same kit. I'm trying to decide if the laurel will be green or gold, but I am leaning heavily toward green. It sticks out so much from the helmet that it feels like it can easily be painted green and be believable as a separate item.

The legs are from the Death Company kit. I shaved off a couple of blood drop items, and it was a pretty easy process to get it back to a mostly vanilla look. The blood vial on his right thigh will be painted as a Marksman's Honour by painting it silver.

The backpack is from the Dark Angels Veterans upgrade kit. I think that's a little candle with a lock on it in the shrine, but the whole hting will be gold so it'll just end up looking like a shrine in the end.

I tried like hell to get a bolter onto this guy, but nothing I did looked quite right. In the end I left it off. It's "standard wargear", so it is legal for WYSIWYG to leave it off. I do plan to try the under-pack carry on another model in the future, as seen on Captain Titus in the Space Marine game.

Progress is coming on these guys, just slowly. I've taken up another hobby in turkey hunting, so now I split my time between three pursuits (hockey, hunting, 40K). Four if you count family time ^_^.

I never made it to my FLGS's most recent tournament. Thelist I'd intended to bring included the first four members of the unit, but I was needed at home that day. It's a bit of a blessing in disguise, as I think I might prefer to debut these guys as a full unit of 10, points-heavy as that may be. They deserve to be fielded as a whole at least once, so why not their initial outing?

I finally managed to finish off the fifth member of the Honour Guard squad:

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z43/goalie20/Warhammer%2040K/Project%20Honour%20Guard/05paint6.jpg

All in all, I'm pretty happy with how he turned out. I do need to glue a slug of pewter to the underside of his base as a counterweight, just in case, but that doesn't have much to do with the painting or playability of the model .

I also added a small patch of static grass to the base of the first Marine (with bolter and sword, and studded face helm) to break up the monotony of the brown. The rest all have some small bitz detail on them, so they're fine.

I have one of the stock GW Gouards on the painting rig right now, but after priming I found a couple mould lines I had missed, so I had to sand off the primer from those areas, fix the lines, and reprime the bare spots. I also found some minor lead rot around his cloak area, and had to sand and reprime those as well. I thought about using Liquid Greenstuff to fill in the pitting, but I think the sanding and reprime took care of it.

While waiting for primer to dry, I started picking bitz for my second-to-last kitbashed model. I got a set of the Sanguinary Guard feathered pads in the mail yesterday, so he'll get at least one of those.

The blue looks great but the gold lacks definition. I think some Leviathan Purple in the recesses would help a lot.

Edit: And maybe some gold+mithril silver highlights

Purple as a shade for gold? Do you have any pics of how that turns out?

I personally prefer a red-gold look to my Marines, as opposed to the yellow/white gold GW studio uses. I've struggled with finding a suitable edge highlight color for it though.

Really liking the lightning effects on that power weapon. I've really got to get past the fear and give it another go...

There is a great video on YouTube done by Catatafish that explains how to do it on a thunderhammer. Do a quick search and you'll find it. It's actually a really simple process!

Basic color theory as purple is a complement to yellow (gold). It looks really good when used sparingly.

Interesting. So for this red-gold coloration I have, I'd probably go a deeper violet?

Yes. I usually mix a bit of purple with brown when shading gold for the deeper recesses. It doesn't take much, but it does work well. Similar concept to using green to shade red.

Interesting. I'll have to fiddle about with that. I do use green to shade red (the red wraps on the axe are washed with Thraka Green), so maybe Leviathan Purple is my thing.

Here's some long-awaited progress shots of my Honour Guard:

The sixth member, a stock, metal GW model:

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z43/goalie20/Warhammer%2040K/Project%20Honour%20Guard/06paint1.jpg

These guys are a real pleasure to paint. So much small detail to pick out. My only gripe was the mold shift on the pewter making for some deep mold lines that I couldn't completely erase. He needs the blade of his axe done in the lightning style I've taken to using, and a touchup of his right knee, where I accidentally touched it with the red from the cloak.

After he's done, it's on to the seventh member, a kitbash. He's got himself a snazzy FW brass etch belt buckle (he's the guy I wrote about in my previious entry). Pretty simple, but I think I may try sculpting something on his greaves. Maybe a plaque or devotional ribbon, like the GW models have.

I'm really looking forward to finishing one last kitbashed model, the counterpart to the above GW stock model, and the GW stock banner bearer, and then washing my hands of the project as a whole. I'll have a full 10-man unit that I'll never field en masse :cuss. Could you imagine running 30 of these guys alongside Calgar? Insanity!

Sixth member member of my Honour Guard now complete:

I think he came out quite well. The cloak could use some better transition in the blending, but this outcome has a certain style to it that I kinda like. The only part I'm not really happy with is the freehand on the gold plates of his right shoulder. I tried a ton of different colors over gold, and none of them was really all that great. I need to study up on how to paint freehand "etched" lettering over metallics.

This looks great, I really like the cloak and the effect on the Power axe

Thanks.

The power weapon effects are actually from a guy on YouTube with the handle of "catattafish" or somehting like that. He shows the effect on a thunder hammer, but I apply it to all my power weapons.

I think he posts here on the B&C from time to time as well.

I've struggled with finding a suitable edge highlight color for it though.

I've found the best highlight for Gold is a Silver-Gold mix. I really don't like the 'use Silver to edge-highlight' method. It's just not authentic.

When I've taken the time to really look at how Gold reacts to light, the main thing I noticed was that no matter how bright and/or white the light source, there are only shades of Gold in the surface. Even at the brightest points you never get a White/Silver glint, just a very bright Gold glint.

To that end I mixed a bottle of pale Silver-Gold, and add it very sparingly as a final highlight. I've started leaning towards a more tarnished Gold colour for Black Legion, so I don't use it much right now. But, when I want a more polished/bright looking Gold, I really like the result.

And, as always, great work! These are looking fantastic.

I use the mix of silver/gold as my final highlight as well. Metallics always photograph horribly, especially gold. However, my edge highlights tend to fade a bit when I apply Dullcote to the model. It's something I have to take into account when I work on my gold.

The seventh member of the Honour Guard is complete:

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z43/goalie20/Warhammer%2040K/Project%20Honour%20Guard/07finished1.jpg

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z43/goalie20/Warhammer%2040K/Project%20Honour%20Guard/07finished2.jpg

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z43/goalie20/Warhammer%2040K/Project%20Honour%20Guard/07finished3.jpg

I think I got some more depth to the gold than I did on previous models, though it might just be that there is more detail painted gold (eagle shoulder pad, skull reliquary on backpack, etc).

This guy also features my first attempt at sculpting a litany scroll. It's on his left leg. Not the best work, but passable for my first try. I used the tutorial I asked Ron at From the Warp to write: here. It isn't as sharp as Ron's work, but I have learned some lessons for next time. I think I need to use an XActo for the outer cutting, and then switch to a sculpting tool for the inner folds. I used my sculpting tool for all of the cuts on this one, and the roudned edges show the evidence of that.

The helmet doesn't look as nice as it does in person. Something about this Mk4 helmet doesn't look right from dead-ahead. Too aardvarky (no, not a real word).

I got the eight Guard primed last night, and the first shade coat of blue on his armor before I conked out for the night. Pretty standard stuff, and I'll likely stick close to the GW color scheme.

I'm still pondering some poses for the ninth Guard. I have plenty of guys pointing bolters, pistols, ro power weapons, so I'm thinking somehting a little more subtly menacing. I have the eagle-headed axe from the Sanguinary Guard kit (LINK) and would like to use it. I also have/had the striding Dark Angels robed legs (LINK), though I'd have to double check my bitz box, I might have traded or sold them off. These are less active than the running legs from Assault Marines, but still show forward motion. I'm thinking that with the right arm positioning, this can give a "I'm walking steadily toward you to beat your face" feel to the model. I'll have to do some mockups to figure it out though.

The other option is to use one of the two-handed swords from the Grey Knights kits alongside either a braced pose, or the same walking forward pose. Again, mockups needed.
