acts of heroism...or stupidity

Right basically i wanna hear about anything in your battles past or present where a model or unit etc has performed an act that you just would not think possible from that unit, or any epic encounters on the battlefield where you can literally imagine how it would have gone.

I'll start with my last battle against blood angels.

The batte was raging all around and by turn 2 bjorn the fell handed met a BA dred 1 on 1 in the centre of the field.

The BA shot first destroying one of bjorns legs, bjorn shot back and stopped the ba dred from shooting in the next turn.

The BA dred moved in for the kill but knew he was out of charge range so decided to remain about 10 inches away knowing bjorn can't charge him.

Bjorn was angry at this point and with a well place shot immobilised the ba dred, now both dreds stand unable to move.

The ba dred knowing now that he had no chance at toe to toe shooting with bjorns superior aim. So he used his magna grapple and dragged bjorn towards with destroying his gun arm in the process.

In the following CC bjorn tore off the BA dreds arm and then ripped the dred in 2.

This was definatly the highlight of the battle.

The battle was a victory thanks largly to Bjorns inspiring presence to his fellow wolves.

I have to say my most recent impressive feat was from on of my Lone Wolves in a tournament I went to last weekend. I was playing Dark Eldar and was being beaten up big style after they seized initiative on me. One of my last models on the table was a Lone Wolf with one wound left, he survived 8 Blaster hits, 5 Dark Lance and around 30 poisoned shots in one round of shooting! Then to top it off he survived 3 rounds of assault against The Baron and 15 Hellions before he was finally dragged down.

A truly epic end to a mighty warriors Saga.

Had an opponent drop Guardsman Marbo next to my sniper Scout pack. He opted to stay out of combat, but lobbed his demo charge regardless. It deviated to where it hit nothing.

On my turn, 3 out of 4 of my snipers missed as well as my missile launcher, so I took my ablative wound scout with his trusty bolt pistol, fired a round and killed Marbo dead.

In my last apoc game a lone wolf held up gabriel seth and corbulo for 4 game turns in close combat. He took them down to 1 wound each before dieing.

A few years ago now I played against orks and a unit of 20 charged my 10 blood claws. The bloodclaws took down 7 of the brutes but were overwhelmed and 9 of them fell. The other ran. Feeling ashamed he turned on the orks who were brutalising his comrades. With a savage howl he charged taking down 4 of the green monsters. The orks turned and fled but were hounded by the young wolf and slaughtered.

I wrote a saga about it in my blog here, but my rune priest truly stood up to his rank and office.

I was playing against some bugs. My rune priest was with my Long Fangs adding his Living Lightning to their missile firing. My opponent sent his Trygon Prime after the pack. After emerging and using it's bio-pulse spine attack to kill some of the pack, the following turn my rune priest detached and went after the beast. Hit hit the monster with his runic weapon and then rolled the necessary 6 to wound. He then followed up by passing his psychic test on the 3d6 from Shadows of the Warp to kill the Prime.

My wolf scouts continue to serve with distinction. One game against chaos marines in an annihilation match my dred was immobilized and my lord and his GH pack were bogged down in combat when my scouts had a Termi lord and retinue teleport within short range of them. My scouts peeled back into the cover of a dense forest where they held killed two of the retinue and on the last turn killed the lord with blade and pistol.

Another game against the same chaos player a drop pod and one surviving scout with bolt pistol ended up taking out a squad of oblits over 2 turns.

Only other story was my Lone wolf in termi armour chain fist and Storm shield strolled right up the middle of the board taking fire the whole time before charging into melee with a furioso dred and living to tell the tale.

The first game I ever took Thunder Wolf Cavalry, and a Wolf Lord fully loaded with upgrades, including Sage of the Warrior Born...

It was against Grey Knights, he had a large ball of Paladins and Draigo, Castellan and Purifiers and some other junk. My TWC charge in and I send the Wolves against the Paladins and the Lord for Draigo.

Long story short, Wolf Lord with his Frost Blade killed Draigo in the first round of combat and only took 2 wounds, and my TWC killed 6 of 10 Paladin models, and I only lost 2/5 of my TWC. Next round of combat my lord swings in and killed 3 paladins then I finished them off, and my TWC died.

AFTER that.... My Lord charges Castellan and some Purifiers, and after 2 rounds of combat wipes them out, all meanwhile the mainstay of my army won the rest of the battle for me due to my heroic Lord and his TWC tying down most of the GK players beef.

Luck was definitly on my side!

facing off against daemons i had ragnar, ulrik and a 8 man grey hunters pack with wulfen (WS5 thanks to ulrik), meltagun and banner. initially in a rhino but disembarked early thanks to a unit of blood crushers nearby.

this squad alone steamed rolled the unit of 5 blood crushers, 10 blood letters, a unit of nurgle plague marines (i think roughly 10 or so) and shot down a daemon prince. after all the carnage it was just ragnar and ulrik left with no wounds lost.

With both heros blood soaked from the daemon filth a soul grinder finally emerged from the warp towards the end of the game. Ragnar split off from Ulrik and charged the soul grinder hoping to blow it away with his meltabombs, while ulrik stood back and had a crack with his plasma pistol. Unfortunately both failed to graze the soul grinder and ultimately fell before the game was over, which lasted till turn 7.

My opponent held well and even though losing like half his army to ragnar and ulriks squad we ended in a draw through kill points.

I could have easily moved back from the soul grinder and embarked ragnar and ulrik in a near by rhino but there's no fun in that!

one of the best recent games i've had.

The last three blood claws in a badly shot up pack charge a fresh twenty man squad of orks with shootas. Twelve attacks, twelve hits, ten wounds, ten dead orks. This brings the orks down to ten models, i.e. no longer fearless. The orks go, killing two blood claws. I won the combat by eight wounds, the orks run, and my sole remaining blood claw makes a sweeping advance and annihilates them. Forty-five points worth of models killed about one hundred fifty points worth in a single turn. The blood claw got a wolf guard upgrade.

Hrothgar, my Rune Priest , faced off against a C'tan in my first ever battle commanding the Wolves. He let loose with a Jaws of the World Wolf which wrenched open a rift into the warp sucking the Necron god into the void. Of course in turn two he failed two psychic tests in a row and promptly followed the beast into that same void, but we don't talk about that. He earned the title Godslayer from then on. I am always amused when my opponents put undue attention on the now famous rune priest just because, "He has to be a super powerful character with a name like Hrothgar the Godslayer!" After my experience with the double perils I don't even pick up any upgrades on him (though sometimes he gets the Saga of the Beastslayer because it fits.)

My Wolf Lord, Ursus Skyhammer smashed his way into a bunch of dirty orcs once and after slaying the orc warboss in hand to hand combat he jumped over to a weaponless warbuggy that was trying to escape. With one mighty blow of his Thunderhammer he flipped the flimsy vehicle right on top of himself where he remained pinned for the rest of the battle because obviously he is too stubborn to die(stupid strength 3 hits from the explosion that manage to take my last wound despite my runic armor...)

I love my wolves and all the great stories they collect!

Truly epic. +1 for showing what Bloodclaws can do!

Only my second time out with my wolves so I'm still getting the hang of it all.

However, in the last game (Command and Control) my RP w/Grey Hunters in Rhino rushed his objective, falling just short in the fifth turn.

In the sixth turn, Inquisitor Karamazov assaulted and knocked out 3 of my hunters.

The dice were not with the grey ones and all their counter assault roles went awry.

BUT, my RP saved the day and ID'ed him with his runesword, leaving his marker in contention, ending the game and earning himself the moniker Sigrdmaekir!

I have a couple

It was my 3rd game playing but 2nd playing with this codex.I played a 2500 point army against a Ultramarines player that only plays big games.I put my Land Raider Crusader in a little out cropping in the middle of my deployment zone so it had a good FoF.First salvo i took out his Caestus Ram..It crashed to the ground at an angle that its guns couldnt hit any of my guys......That was heriosm IMO because it would've destroyed my army

Another tale of heroism; Logan led a 5 man pack of termies i started of shooting at a squad of scouts,I took out a couple of them then a drop pod lands about 1.5 feet away and a tac squad comes spilling out going to aim to take my termies out.Well i had a surprise for my opponent.....a pack of fenrisian wolves charge the squad and takes out a few.I fire into the squad with my termies then charge in to finish of the squad. After that I was going to go back to finish the scouts when my opponent drops a few drop pods down.Thats the beginning of the end for my guys;he unleashes everything into my termies(wolves died because my termies didnt get into combat with the 1st tac squad fast enough ) 1 falls because of the sotrm.I kill some of the squad.Next turn he turn he drops more pods. Then we repeat the process. We do it again and again till approximately 2/3 of his army(all drop pod sqauds) comes and attacks my termies.I put up a good fight but with about 6 tactical squads firing into the pack all fell except.Logan lasted till the end of the game.I would run in attack a squad then have to fall back. Then it would repeat.I brought my pack of swift claws in and killed off quite a bit of the marines while they were busy trying to bring the Great Wolf down.

Heroism;RP in RA against a squad of termies.he survived and even killed off a few termies to.

Stupidity;the squad of termies that went after my RP came to attack my LRC.I sent my BC out to attack them.....They had to retreat but since i didnt know better i left my LRC where it was,so that didnt give my BC's much room.when they had to fall back they hit my LRC and were wiped out :)

A month or so ago in a tournament I faced off againts a foot slogging eldar list which consisted mostly of two ten-man wraithguard squads, eldrad, and uriel. He deployed in a clump on the edge thinking I'd be intimidated by all that AP 2 shooting (not to mention fortune and doom). But I drove my Redeemer with Ragnar and a full squad of kitted out grey hunters right at them. I charged in on turn two, and although all but one hunter and Ragnar met a warrior's end; in the end they held out long enough (three or four game turns) for a rhino of hunters to flank around and help clean up the remaing four wraithguard and both characters. winning me that game.

I posted this piece of saga a week or so back in Amicus butsince its so epic I just have to pull a Lukas and brag a bit.

2000pts Chaos VS Space Wolves Part 2 (The Revenge)

A little back story to this battle: Back in third ed my friend played strictly Chaos, and his warband was nasty. Khârn and his full zerkers squad and 2 Juggernauts. Abbaddon with TDA legionaries and Ahriman with his thousand sons. Not to mention a Demon Prince and several units of Obliterators. This force wouuld regurlarly pound my wolves into the ground but they always came out knowing they had barely snatched the victory. Of all the battles fought between these armies one moment (well two but well get into that later) still sticks out in both our minds as the single most awesome moment ever. This upcoming tale occured during 5th ed however it bares a striking resemblance to an event from 3rd.

A massive chaos force lead by Abbaddon, Ahriman and Khârn chose to invade a small imperial world quickly smashing through the planetary defense forces and claiming victory. But the message for aid had already been sent and the Space Wolves had come to the call. As soon as the wolves hit planetside the war reached its peak. Abbaddon and his allies had met this particular Great Company before and this was no simple war it was bloody grudge match.

A full pack of Bloodclaws lead by Wolf Guard and Wolf Priest advanced through heavy cover stalking Abbaddons forces. But as they closed for the kill Abbaddons and his elite guard materialized from thin air and knowing the danger the furious Bloodclaws posed to his plans ordered his forces to fire upon their location. With the aid of the Obliterators Abbaddons elite guard sent a seemingly endless rain of death down upon the Claws. Both the Wolf Guard and Wolf Priest were injured beyond combat as then enemy continued to death upon them. But the Claws who had managed to evade any damage thanks to there cover pushed forward and met Abbaddons unit in cold bloody combat.

The claws got the drop on Abbaddon and with only three casualties to their own pack they wiped out every traitor except Abbaddon himself who scored the three kill. It was then that Kharns berzerkers arrived to support the overwhelmed Abbaddon though he himself had killed all but two of his own unit in his blind rage. The Emperor protects and the World Eaters champion was unable to stike more than a glancing blow agains the loyal Bloodclaws. Abbaddon however felled four of the sons of Russ. In retaliation the remaining claws divided their efforts and killed Kharns followers as well as managed to strike down the champion himself.

Again all alone Abbaddon lashed out and killed all but one of the brave Bloodclaws. The bloodclaw stood bravely remembering his heritage as a son of Russ and fought on scoring two devestating wounds on the chaos lord. As the war raged around them time seemed to stand still for the two warriors. Abbaddon made to end the fight with one last flourish but the Emperor saw fit to protect his faithful warrior one last time and Abbaddon was unable to bring down the lone warrior. In his own failure to slay the weak foe Abbaddons demon blade chose to feed on his soul instead and with mighy roar Abbaddons form was burned to an empty husk. (It should be stated here that for some strange reason Abbaddon had a feeling of deja vu at this point. For in his memory it seemed as if he could remember this exact incident happening once before.)* The Claw stood back amazed at what had just happened.

He looked out at the field of battle and saw the damage wreaked by the Obliterators and the Thousand Sons. All around him wolves were dying, the smoking wreck of a Predator sat some ways behind him and the ruined form of the venerable dreadnought Ullik Mightyclaw lay on its side. The nigh invulnerable sarcophagus a twisted shattered mess and the claw which had given him his name no where to be seen. A pack of Grey Hunters sat behind cover licking their wounds as Ahriman sent wave after wave of warp energy and his rubric marines sent an endless volley of bolter fire into their postion. The Grey Hunters had eliminated more than half of the thousand sons in the exchange of fire and even managed a minor wound on their leader, but their own numbers were beginning to dwindle.

The lone claw launched one last assault into the thousand sons, his warcry echoing across the ruind battlefield. Ahriman had been prepared for the lone warriors charge and rasied his staff to end the puny bloodclaws attempts. But again the claw proved to be every bit as lethal as his designation seemed. Ahriman with all his chaos given power was unable to land even one strike on the brave lad. His rubric brothers had more luck and were able to land a number of seemingly devestating blows but the enraged warrior of Russ shrugged them all off and managed to reduce the four remaining rubricae to empty plates of armor.

Ahriman found himself alone against this determined fool but was unwilling to give up. He fought hard but was unable to kill this lone mad man. Then just as the sun was setting the Bloodclaw made one last all or nothing attack. He lunged and swung his poweraxe dealing two horrendous wounds upon the sorceror and felling him.

Again the claw looked out upon the ruined battlefield, his grey hunter brothers held their objective thanks to his blind wrath. The battle was done and the forces of chaos were retreating, the wolves had pulled victory from the jaws of defeat thanks to the brave efforts of one Bloodclaw.

After this battle Wolf Priest Torm the Hunting Wolf, offered the brave bloodclaw a position in the grey hunters. The claw refused the offer asking the Priest "If you promote me who will kill our enemies champions?".

Thus began the saga of Ulf the Slayer of Champions*.

*This is almost the exact same situation that had occured several years earlier. It should be noted however that Abbaddons sword killed him before Kharns involvement in the original battle and it was Khârn who slayed the Bloodclaw in 3rd.

*The tale of Ulf the Slayer of Champions is unfortunately a sad one. He eventually falls to the Wulfen before falling to chaos.

I field a Lone Wolf that I usually just charge in to tie up anything. Hes gotten a bit of a reputation in my gaming circle for being unkillable. My last game, I marched him straight up the centre line. He took an entire turn of shooting from a gunline marine army, walked up to a Dread, punched it to death and proceded to mince his way through two tac squads.
  • 2 months later...

By the will of the Deathwolf, I resurrect this topic.

Anyway, I have a few tales of glory from my Tome of Battle Lore (where I record all Battle Reports of my Space Wolves).

The first is against the vile ranks of Daemon kind. I was new to playing Space Wolves and I had two packs of fifteen blood claws in LR Crusaders, one lead by a Rune Priest, Haakon, and the other lead by the Unnamed Proxy Wolf Priest. Early on, one of my Crusaders was immobilized. The terrain was setup so that the Blood Claws were effectively cut off from the other 75% of the board. Thankfully, that 25% was where the Daemon player left 2 squads of Pink Horrors, 2 Squads of Flamers and some plaguebearers. Haakon lead these fresh recruits out onto the battlefield, smiting the Pink Horror with lightning and harsh language before crashing into them.

Recall that Daemons are Fearless. I slew all BUT ONE Pink Horror, and thus remained in cc, saving me from the Flamers, which moved away from the soon-to-be unleashed Blood Claws. Then, over the next few turns I slaughtered more than half his army, jumping from cc to cc, until two things presented themselves: Ku-Gath the Plaguefather and a Soul Grinder. The Plaguefather and the SOul Grinder appeared on either side of Haakon's Pack, but the cunning rune caster did not falter. A nearby player, who wasn't playing the game said, "Wow, you are screwed  ." I said I had a secrete weapon, and he asked what it was. I pointed to my BS 3 Blood Claws and said that there were two meltaguns in each pack. He laughed at me. Haakon had the two melta-men in his pack fire at the mechanical monstriousity. Both shots hit, both caused explosions, consuming one of the youngsters in the aftermath (I repeated this with the other Blood Claw pack, which faced TWO soul grinders and some troops). Then the Plague Father shot filth and diseases at the whittled pack, leaving but five Claws and Haakon himself. After three rounds of furious fighting, the claws were dead and the Plague Father was down to one wound. Unfortunately, Haakon died, but had kept Ku-Gath away long enough for Anhilation victory for me to ensue! Later, Haakon would be given the Saga of the Beastslayer, having personally killed around eleven daemons and almost banishing Ku-Gath to the Warp.

My second tale is shorter. On the ice world of Calish, a massive Chaos Marine army arrived and began to wreck havoc on the defenders of the world. Knowing they were doomed unless they received aid, they sent out a desperate call for help.

They were answered by the Space Wolves great company "The Tempest." In the climatic battle, the dread Khorne Chaos Lord rode around on his jump pack, making "zoom" noises while he did so. As he fell upon the Sons of Russ, he discovered what he thought was a great leader, alone from a retinue.

This warrior was Byrnjolf the Cursed-Life ;) . He was a Lone Wolf in terminator armor, chainfist and storm shield. The Chaos Lord assaulted Byrnjolf with 17 attacks, all power weapons, and felt assured of his victory. Byrnjolf laughed at this feeble assault, taking no wounds and chainfisted the face off of the Khorne Lord. Then 7 Khorne Bezerkers descended upon the brave warrior, blood induced fury carrying them toward him. They dealt one wound and lost three beserkers. In the next round he was finally brought into the Red Dream, where he was recovered by his Battle Brothers after the victorious battle. Single handedly, he held off the two most assaulty-forces in my enemy's army, while Arjac went around smashing those Chaos Marine things that are basically Soul Grinders, but whose names I can't remember (three of them).

't was the year something somewhere, on Hermelinus Prime, where a bunch of filthy chaosloving pricks calling themselves renegade space wolves where planting there droppods. Fortunatly for any of us with a sence for fashion, the loyalist faction of the 666th company of spacewolves (a collection of victors in drinking competitions) where there aswell, enjoying the tastes of belgian beer. as unit of TDA-armoured wannabe wolfguard one after the other landed, the bolterwielding, and madly drunk, grey hunters decided to have a little shooting competition. Turn 4 the chaosworshippers ere tabled. ;)
My Wolf priest (who hasn't been named yet) had the Blood claws that he was leading shot to pieces by a squad of Khorne berserkers and plague marines. He then got himself assaulted by no less that 13 KB, a greater demon of Khorne and Huron. By some sheer feat of incredible tenacity, the WP managed to cull the KBs down to 6 models, bring Huron down to one wound and kill the greater demon before the pack of grey hunters made it into the fray. He then went on to lead them against the plague marines and wrestled the objective from their grasp. A truly mighty achievement for this wolf priests FIRST battle.
