jbarket
Brothers! I'm still rather new to the fang, and need some basic advice. I took third in my first tournament with Space Wolves this past weekend. I played the overall winner early on (and lost, but it was close) who was also a Space Wolves player. Because of its ubiquity in lists, I was running 9 Grey Hunters and 1 WG in a Rhino (or 8 GH, 1 WG and a RP depending on the squad). My opponent was running full GH squads pretty much across the board. Since then, I've been trying to work out what is really better. 9 GH with Mark, a Meltagun and Banner in a Rhino with a single Wolf Guard with a Powerfist and Combimelta is 243pt. 10 GH with Mark, two MGs, a Powerfist and Banner in a Rhino comes out to 240pt. Points wise, it's basically a wash. Even with six squads, we're barely talking about enough points to buy a single Grey Hunter. Essentially, it's the difference between 2 MG shots, 1A with a PF and 8 LD versus 1 MG shot (and a combi shot), 2A with a PF and 9 LD. With the rise in AV13/AV14 vehicles post-Necrons, MG are more important than ever. What are you guys running and why? clanfield
i always run 10 men with a power wepon/fist vs meq or a mark vs hordes the two wepons i give the squads depend on the roll so two flamers in a drop pod or 2 plas guns for supressing fire i only use 2 meltas on my dread hunter squad for anti tank i use speeders Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/242078-10-grey-hunters-or-9-and-wolf-guard/#findComment-2925849 Share on other sites
dswanick
! personally tend to run 8GHs and 1 WG leaving room in the Rhino for an IC. I also prefer to run Plasma guns over Melta, Power weapons on my GH, and if I'm going to field a Fist it's on my WG. Thunderhawk3015
Wolf Guard for the extra point of leadership and 2 PF attacks at the end of close combat for possible deal breakers on your opponent. Combi weapon gives you the clutch shot when you really need it. That's how I look at it if the GH are going to be doing multiple things, if they are going to operate as fire support for something else, I drop the WG and load up the 2 special weapons. Donutzot
the only pack of grey hunters I run with a wolf guard is the one with my rune priest in it. And thats only because I want the cyclone missile launcher on my wolf guard terminators. I am not a big fan of running a grey hunter pack with less then 10 because I want my free special weapon choice. But its actually your choice if you want to invest more points in your army list just because you want an extra leadership an extra powerfist and probally a 1-shot melta(combi-weapon). thor1234
Oh the advatage of running no rhinos..... I run packs of 10 with either 2 meltas or 2 plasmas AND a wold guard once you get to grips with the slight lack of speed footsloggin actually becomes quite a formidable force...... my regular opponents have learned to fear the triple plasma turn! as to you dilema Jbarket I would suggest wolf guard as the ld bonus really helps with those counter attacks, as does the extra fist...... I take it you don't play against Chaos Daemons very often. Flamers of Tzeentch are always a concern even with transports!
