Knights of Gryphonne <UPDATE 04/12/11>

Hey guys, I'm thinking about starting a new marine army and I quite fancied doing a Knights of Gryphonne army. I've done a rough tester marine to try out the colour scheme and also try out the battle damage technique (be gentle its my first time). I know its not completely done, some of the detailing has been left out, like purity seals etc, but apart from that, just want any critique and help with regards to refinement. Oh, and I'd probably get transfers for the chapter symbols....not even gonna go near freehanding that badboy again. Added the lexicanum pic for reference.

Looking forwards to hearing from you guys!

Edit: Oh, pictures suck because I have to use my phone.....

I love it. Im a fan of a more muted (or as GW employees call them, "realistic") colour schemes and this strikes the right balance between that, whilst still also being visually enticing.

The only thing I would change would be the eyes perhaps. Something brighter, maybe a turquoise to really bring them out, and act as a contrast to the much darker helmet and jump pack.

Just my $0.02

Best,

TJ

those free hand scratch are nice! the number on the knee is a litlle week compare to the rest.

I think th scheme is good, although I would change the dark green weaponry to something more flashy.

Heh, cheers man, I prefer "realism" aswell. As for the turquoise eyes, this is the first mini I've painted in over a year and a half, so I'm down to using my stuff thats not dried out....I was planning on turquoise for the eyes but only my blue was good :tu: . Any thoughts on if the damage came out ok?

Damage report - no complaints from me. One thing you could do, for scratches as big as the ones on the shoulder pad could be to physically make them on the plastic, would give you a guide to paint, or you could just let the wash do the work for you. With the smaller ones it might be less effective but if its that big, wouldnt it be better to really make the gash rather than just imitate it?

@KaiserTJ1860: I don't know, I kind of dislike real gouges from the plastic, or at least mixing them with freehand scratches. I think its more a case of making smaller scratches to make them fit. Thanks for the critique though.

@tiny sam: Yeah the numbers weak, as I said, bit of a rough job to get the general scheme down, I think a matt varnish would make things a bit better. Apart from that, I do think the green is a little muted, I may change eyes, weapons and strap to turqouise, though from painting orange, I've learnt that it's quite difficult to find a colour that fits thats nice and realistic, fits and doesn't make them look like a clown.... Just worried if I jazz it up too much it goes a little too clown vomit.

Hehe, theres a few topics on this issue, I've started one too:

Custom Decals

If its just black you want, you can get away with clear decal paper of which there are various options. Colour on colour backgrounds requires white decal paper which you'd need to cut around the transfer or paint over the white parts

thers more info here: Ye Olde Decal Project

Best,

Im just a fellow shoulder-pad-less brother looking for a way to give my marines the recognistion they deserve. Im also toying with making a raised shoulder pad out of GS and moulding it and ive found a couple ways to do that, although I imagine I'd only use them for Vets/HQ/Sgts. Would only require on session of fiddly GS sculpting and then you can make perfect copies and perfectly placed at that time and time again.

Just comes down to GS skills of which I am yet to test myself at...

Just a little update, So far after a several tea filled hours I've nearly got the majority of my first combat squads body colours done. Just need to buy some basing mats and a few paints for detail/weapon work.

I've tried to thin down my pain a little more and used a little Windsor and Newton flow improver, which is actually quite cool. Also attempted to scale down the battle damage and make them more crisp.

I received my transfer paper from ebay today so I'll let you know how that goes when I've got my micro sol and micro set.

Anyways heres some pics, mainly of the sergeant rocking an old school power fist, as he's the most finished. I'm debating giving him a back banner. I think it'll look cool in a contrasting colour, what do you think?

I dont think its just you Rhino, They look a lil yellow to me too. Also I think the highlighting is a bit to heavy and blocky. Im no expert myself, just saying what I see. Im looking mainly at the legs, top half looks awesome shading/highlighting wise to me

Argh I hope not! They're supposed to be orange! ;)

They do a look a bit yellow/very pale orange. Your light set up may be part of the issue.

Check out the Cult of Orange link in my sig if you want to find some orange recipes that may help you modify yours a bit if you feel it is necessary.

Finally finished (minus decals) my sergeant, I added the assault marine in for colour reference. This is a real project for me, I'm in no rush to game, I just want a nice looking army. It's kind of an experiment for me to try out different colours, techniques, materials etc. I normally just do flat bases with grass and dirt, but on my sergeant I found some lavender style undergrowth in a model shop, and I thought this would be alien enough and also give a nice contrast to the orange. I tried a bit of OSL, but I'm not entirely happy with it, but for a first attempt it'll do. As for my recipe for orange:

Macharius Solar Orange

Gryphon Sepia/Badab Black Wash 1:3

Macharius Solar Orange/Vomit Brown 3:1 Highlight

Macharius Solar Orange/Vomit Brown 1:1 Highlight

Vomit Brown Edge Highlight

Final very edge highlight of golden yellow, which I may have gone a bit heavy on some of them according to feedback, so I'll try reel it in for the next batch!

Bad light.

Yay! I have finally finished a combat squad, I'm taking my time over these guys, putting a litle more effort into them than most of my previous armies. I've added a back banned to the sergeant, not that I find them practical, but I think it just adds to the badassery of a guy that can fight with a sail on his backpack. Although it limits his movement through urban areas, I prefer to think marines are sensible enough to leave them at home in a city fight. The flamers pinned so I can change it for either that, the melta or the plasma.

I've also converted the next thing I want to work on, my Chaplain, nice and simple but I like it!

Cool chappy. Where's the jump pack from?

It's actually an old GW metal jump pack, old school like pre new design. I found a load of them in my boxes when I moved house so I thought it would be cool to give the chaplain pre-heresy relics etc...
