recon0321
i have a idea to use some gloss varnish on parts of my space marines armor to make certain color "pop" more, however i am concerned how can i protect the rest of the model from damaged like chips and dings from playing? would matt varnish over gloss take away the shine? but couldn't do matt varnish over the entire model then put put the gloss on the parts that i want and still get the desired effect? thanks brothers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/242373-gloss-varnish/ Share on other sites
Subtle Discord
Matte or Stain spray, then go back and pick out the areas you want shiny with painted on Gloss. OptiMAT
I've found the Satin spray to be great for getting edges and colours to enhance/shine without it going OTT. However, I am looking for a Matte spray now, because while the Satin is good, I personally didn't really like it for the whole of my force. Subtle Discord
"There are no stupid questions." ... *Billy raises his hand* ... "Except from you, Billy." ... *Billy lowers his hand* ~ Family Guy (If memory serves correct) If you're not sure, it's not a stupid question. Matte is dull and flat. Gloss is shiny and 'wet'. Satin is between the two. It's called Semi-Gloss sometimes, but Satin (very much like the fabric, hence the name) is more accurate. Now, if that's the look you want is completely subjective, and you need to decide. On a semi-related note; Gloss generally will also protect a miniature better than Matte. Satin also sits in the middle in that case as well, more protection than Matte with less shine than Gloss. Do a light cover of Gloss and a light cover of Matte or Satin to get best ob both worlds, but be very careful not to put too much on. Since it's transparent, varnish can be tricky to know when it's done. I personally will brush some Gloss varnish on to things that are prone to wear (Horn tips, bayonet tips, exposed edges) and then follow with a Satin spray, to avoid applying too much. Hemal
gloss then satin or matte is your firend for the reasons listed above. Gloss also helps decals adhere properly... IdOfEntity
Another option is to use brush on matte and brush on gloss varnish. You can pick out the areas you want to shine without adding layer upon layer on top of your detail work.
