Magnets under GW bases?

I have been having trouble finding just the right thickness for magnets to put under my GW bases. The ones I have and have tried are either too thin (don't work) or too thick (make them wobbly on the table).

Can someone that has successfully mounted magnets under the GW bases tell me what thickness was "just right"?

ie.... 2.5MM or 3/16" or whatever, I am not concerned about the diameter as much as thickness.

Thanks!

I've never gone for the 'just right' approach. I use 1/8 x 1/8 x 1/16 for general purpose, and 3/16 x 3/16 x 1/16 for extra hold. (1/16 is the thickness) You can do round if you like, but you're giving up a bit of extra pull. More magnet = more pull. Square gives you more magnet. Round is nice if you plan to drill a hole to place the magnet in.

How you fix the magnet is the key to getting it 'just right'. I use magnetic sheet for Troop size plastic/resin miniatures (it has more then enough pull), but for bigger things, I glue a rare earth to the 'inside' of the magnetic sheet, and then attach it like normal. Doubles up the sticking power, and it's a simple preparation.

Many people take a blob of greenstuff, add a drop of super glue and then place it in the base. From there they add a small drop pf glue to the magnet, and jam it into the soft greenstuff, and force it down until it's even with the bottom. You're left with a 'foot' of greenstuff that has a magnet embedded at just the right height, all locked with super glue for insurance. Google should turn up some videos.

Don't forget that it's ok for the magnet to be ever-so-slightly below the surface. As long as it's getting within 1mm of the metal, it'll produce plenty of pull.
