DIY Chapters meeting official Chapters

Greetings brethren of the Liber.

While brainstorming some fluff for the Liber Campaign, I wondered what would happen if an official Chapter were to be mentioned. Now I don't mean have the Ultramarines turn up in our campaign, but in the general writing of both the campaign and our IA articles how does it look for a Chapter that is well known to be mentioned? Can you get away with a brief mention, such as Chapter X and DIY X once worked together? What about Captain Sicarius and a squad standing on you DIY's battle barge as they talk tactics? Even more bold, Captain Lysander gets rather upset and strikes a few blows with Captain Doityaself of the Sons of Somebloke?

This has been another random thought from the keyboard of the 11th Company Dark Master.

For Caliban

nothing wrong with mentioning official chapters in itself, but such mentions, like anything else in your IA really, should be a significant influence, or landmark in their history. Otherwise it comes off as just name-dropping. Not to say that that the other chapter has to have itself been influential, but maybe that big battle that impacted your chapter was one in which said official chapter was also a major player. Maybe they were leading the thing while your guys were off being awesome. Or maybe you just mention them as being your progenitor (the most likely candidate).

As always, the devil's in the details.

Metioning official Chapters in IAs and the like is something that needs to be done well if it's done at all.

If you were to go, for instance; 'My chapter fought alongside the space wolves/black templars/blood angels and were so impressed by that one battle they had a festival where they each burnt their copies of the Codex Astartes and now I can use the SW/BT/BA dex for my DIY', then that becomes an imediate target for the infamous Relase-The-Bowling-Ball-Critique, not least because that last part of the sentence is always there regardless of whether or not it's actually been written.

The key thing, I think, is that meeting the official Chapters has to be done in a way that legitimately adds something (other than a codex change) to the DIY Chapter, otherwise you might as well use another DIY captain/company/homeworld, etc.

Also, to let personal feelings get in the way for a moment, I'd say keep those official types out of the Liber Campaign. We DIYs are doing all the work, they shouldn't get to take any of the glory! ;)

I had no plan to put any of the glory hogs..er...I mean our glorious brethren of the Official Chapters into anything I do for the Campaign. I was merely wondering, as I often do. What can I say, I like asking questions so that one day at least my Angels of Shadow will be finished...one day...

The only name dropping of official Chapters I would put into any of my IAs would be my Chapters primogenitor. Sallies for my good two shoes marines, maybe they fought alongside one time but I wouldn't go as far to say my Chapter rescued their founders (smells a bit cheesy) or anything like that. There would be rejoicing then on their separate ways.

Putting unofficial Chapters in, hell yes. For the Liber!

I think it all depends. Name dropping such as 'during X campaign Y DIY chapter fought alongside Z famous chapter in M39 or whatever is acceptable. I would stick away from more recent events and named characters, like Calgar, Lysander and co. So, id not have Y fighint in M conflict with Z in M41. But further back? Anything is possible, really. not to say they have not, just safer not too. Its all about skill and how you pull it off in the end as to how poeple view it.

however, it also depends on the chapter, so, and Unforgiven chapter is much more likely to have interaction with the DA/AoA/AoR than, say, an Ultra successor. same thing may apply to RG due to the geneseed and the BA when discussing the Black Rage/Red Thirst and the search for a cure. It all varies really.
