New to the game

Hello fellow wolf brothers. I've just recently gotten into 40k and chose the space wolves right off the bat due to their rich history and tradition. I bought the space wolves pack and the regular tactical marine box and hope to have all twenty painted as soon as possible. I plan to add some devastators and rhinos next. My question is will it be possible to play a game with twenty models? I have yet to pick up the rule book and don't excatly know what the smallest points value that can be played in 40K. Thanks!

If you're new then yes, it's possible to play with just twenty models - just explain it as an introductory/beginners game and you're practising. Try to get a game with a friend - they'd be more willing to have a small game with a new guy than a stranger would.

Most small games tend to be roughly 1000 points, which is something two squads isn't going to cover. If I had my 'dex to hand I could probably quote you numbers, but I don't.

A Grey Hunter (standard Space Wolf Marine) will run you 15 points, stock.

If you're new, you shouldn't have trouble finding someone to play some 500 point games. I'd suggest also picking up the rule book however, so you at least have an idea of what does what while trying to build an army.

Yes, my goal currently is to start playing as many games as I can with 500 pts to gain some experience.

Welcome to the Fang!

Please take the time to review the forum rules, and the rules of The Fang.

500 point battles are a great way to learn the rules, and are great fun for those with more experience as well, I don't think you will have any trouble finding opponents.

If you can spare it, pick up the assault on black reach set. It will net you a dread, some termies, and more tactical marine/grey hunters. It will also give you a small rulebook which is AWESOME compared to the huge rulebook. It will also give you templates, turn counters and markers. All of which are super useful for playing the game. With a bit of work, it is easy to convert those models into something more space wolfy, plus if you have another friend interested in playing the game, then you have a small ork force which you can loan out to learn the game together.

You could also play some 400 point games to get to grips with the basics of the rules. Think its called 'combat patrol' and has the following force organisations:

1+ troop

0-1 elite

0-1 fast

0-1 heavy

Nothing with combined AV over 33 either. So nothing too heavy.

And welcome to the Fang. Enjoy the ale and watch out for 'Greenhorn' and don't get caught seeing......bad things happen

Welcome to the Fang pup! Help yourself to an ale!

If there is a hobby store nearby ask if they hold any WH40k escalation tournaments. Would be a fun way for you to get your feet wet.

An escalation tournament is a good way to slowly introduce new players to larger sized armies. Every round you play you add more and more points to your list:

-First round is 500

-Second round is 750

-Third round is 1000

-Fourth round is 1250

-Fifth and final is 1500

If your wanting a rhino buy a razorback or another Rhino based model and magnetize the weapons. That would be more worth.

Never ever ever buy a rhino. The "rhino" chassis kit comes within the razorback/predator/vindicator/whirlwind boxes, so just buy one of those instead and magnetize the weapons like Arez said.

yeah, I plan on buying 2 or 3 razorbacks and just have them painted and magnetized to become rhinos

I recommend getting a predator to.They are really good

what about a vindicator

Two words......HUGE BOOM!

They do draw a lot of fire too which can help your other armour. S10 ordnance scares people for some reason.

your getting 3 units of long fangs . get 15 RL and 6 lascanons for those time when you think you may face LR or necron [or are playing more then 1500pts]. after that it doesnt realy matter what tanks you buy .

Do I detect a hint of envy there Jeske? :)

of what ? chaos doesnt have LF or LF-like units . I can envy GK because they do same thing as my EC only for less points with force weapons and better transports , I cant envy something I wouldnt be able to have .

and as nids goes , its hard to compare nid units to meq ones . Yes they are generaly weaker and cost more , but one could say that about the whole dex.

as of why other tanks dont matter , I think it is simple . it doesnt matter if he goes razor spam or rhinos or puts a LR in for WG termis or takes pods or decideds that he wants more RL shots and adds 1-2x2 landspeeders . LF give an awesome fire power base for good points , that work with the rest of the army realy well[like adding a terminator WG with a cyclon] or form an anti deep strike/infiltration fire base with a rune priest etc.
