Dire Wolves

Dear Battle Brothers,

I am in the process of deciding if I want to do a scouring era Blood Angles army or a DYI army that uses the BA codex. But before I can make this choice I need some assistance and opinions.

If I go the route of DYI do I have to have them be BA successors to use their army rules or am I able to be somewhat creative and try and justify another chapter not of BA decent that has the same advantages and disadvantages but for different reasons?.

An example would be to justify the red thirst and bonuses from the sang priests (I intend to always have a priest with any unit if I can help it) as a chapter with advanced combat stim research resulting in some units having the "thirst" bonus because the sergeant distributed stims to his squad and the Priests are actually just real bad ass apothecaries that distribute it to the unit?

I do not intend to have death company be involved with my army ever so I can write that portion out completely and not deal with it at all.

I know I have allot of fluff to work out as well, I want to call the chapter the "Dire Wolves" they would use the same heraldry as "House Stark" from "Game of Thrones" and I want them to be grey with one shoulder pad white, the other studded (will be using heresy armor from forge world) Gold trim and highlights with white helms.

Brother Captain Cole.

Winter is Coming…sorry, had to be said.

Using Blood Angels for the rule set in their codex, but not being a successor chapter is perfectly fine. Rule of thumb is of course to pick one codex (Black Templars, Blood Angels, Dark Angels or Codex Marines) and not cherry pick from multiple codices.

Yup, this sounds like it will work fine. You can just make them an agressive (jump packs), Apothecary-heavy (a la Red Scorpions) Chapter, and as you say the other special BA rules could be covered by combat stimms. They could easily come from any Primogenitor, I could see WS or UM working well. Colour scheme sounds cool too.

One piece of advice though, be careful not to overtheme them. Dire Wolves is good, colours is good, but if your Chapter Master is called Stark and your homeworld is Winterfell, etc, etc, it starts getting a bit obvious and doesn't come across as well. Not saying you would do this of course, it's just something that is sometimes an issue for DIY'ers.
