Missing Legion Side Project

First I will start off with the disclaimer that this is NOT a theory of what happened to one of the missing legions nor am I trying or will try to imply that this is the truth. I'm just throwing around ideas after reading the discussions about the missing legions and wondered "What if it was like this.." and what if I made some of these for a pre-heresy strike force?

I'm also not asking for all the taboo speakers who will say this is a silly topic. What is wrong with exploring the possibility of the missing legions to the extent of even playing them? As long as you don't claim that your history is real fluff or that your legion is super awesome, why not I say.

With that said, let's get to it!

Legion II/XI

Adopted Name: ???

Shadow Ascendants

Shattered Prophets

Scions of Shadows

Defiant Apostles

Fallen Sons

Shadow Sons

Defiant Sons

Shadow Wardens

Shadow Prophets

The Purifiers

Tigers

Possible Themes:

Roman Legion-esque (Not like Ultras with some influence, FULLY based around Roman politics, organization, war tactics). This legion is lead by a brash, headstrong primarch who takes his forces against the strongest of the Imperium's opponents with unyielding strength and strong arm tactics. It is this attitude that takes the legion to its doom, 'biting off more than it could chew'.

Feral Renegades; Betrayed by their Emperor and filled with hatred of those who wronged them, these warriors are without home or Primarch. Constantly on the move and forced to make due with what they can find, the tattered remains of the legion often deal with other renegades and xenos to survive. Goals often shift to immediate concerns and are different between surviving leaders, some out for vengeance while others just want to survive.

Devout Warriors; Set on a crusade of purification across the stars, razing entire systems on but the slightest hint of chaos or resistance to the Emperor's leadership. Censured for their killings of innocents, the Legion continued their holy war unabated, feeling that their brothers could not see the heretics as only they could. This would force the Emperor to take a more permanent punishment.

I'd like for others to help brainstorm unique cultures or war groups that the Legion could be based on, consider this a group project too! :tu:

Primarch Name: ???

Lord Purinator (Purifier)

Homeworld:

A Space Hulk, the remains of their once great fleet now acting as their only refuge.

Specialty:

History:

The Tragedy:

  • Sent to the extreme fringes of the galaxy to fight/stall/investigate xenos or galactic/intergalactic anomalies predicted or discovered by the Emperor himself. Wiped out or lost.
Geneseed experimented on leading to extermination to stave off further research?
Attempted to secede from Imperium, fought to the last on their homeworld.
Primarch is discovered to be mutated upon first contact or shortly after, leading to him and his legion being put to the death.
Put to death after ignoring orders to cease their actions that endangered humans, the Imperium, and/or fellow Astarte.
Disbanded as a legion with their Primarch jailed/killed and enveloped into another legion, later becoming its own chapter.
    ???

Consider this a thread for your own thoughts on the missing legions and if, IF you ever wanted to create one how would you make it? Perhaps it will give others conversion or fiction ideas and perhaps shine a small light of hope in the DIY world that seems quite set in stone about this forbidden area.

Don't be put off by the fact that this goes against fluff or is taboo, just post your own ideas (as long as they aren't blatantly silly). Just consider it Alt-verse if it makes you feel better.

Geneseed experimented on leading to extermination to stave off further research?

See, if I ever was going to do a lost legion*, this is almost exactly the route I'd take.

The difference being I'd have him eventually fumble the experiments, only I'd need a way for him to do that which doesn't produce exactly the same results as Corax's Weregeld. :D

*Disclaimer: I have actually had other ideas for them, but this is by far my favourite.

EDIT:

And the Sons of =][= DELETED =][= but that's a successor to a lost legion, not a lost legion.

The biggest problem I have with the missing legion discussion is the high probability that they were wiped out completely. My theory/idea for a missing legion would be a ragged and completely feral chapter of marines that survived the purge of their Legion and Primarch. They nurse a deep hatred not only for the Emperor and the Imperium, but also the Chaos Legions who turned on him. They were never given a chance to prove their loyalty, and they despise the Traitors for throwing away what they themselves were never given. After 10,000 years, they have been stealing, raiding, and generally scrounging whatever they can from wherever they can. They try to keep their armor functional and at least painted the same, which is a herculean task at times.

As for why they were purged, I think the best answer is that they were a mighty legion who fought for the Emperor successfully for years until their Primarch was discovered. Unfortunately, their Primarch was warped and mutated into a horrible monster. The Emperor destroys said monster Primarch and, fearing that the contamination was genetic and hereditary, purges the entire legion to ensure the safety of the rest. As in every attempt at genocide however, some escaped, and they remain to the present or whenever they were destroyed at a later date. Since they would have been known Legion XI or Legion II before their Primarch would name them, they would never have gotten a true name. They are nameless Ronin, serving no master, but seeking both survival and the destruction of those they consider enemies, (ie: everyone). Since they don't care one whit about the doctrines of the Imperium, I could see them negotiating/working with Xenos or Rebels, since they wouldn't see them like the rest of the galaxy. They wouldn't be friends, but they would at least not murder them brutally on sight, unless it aided them in some way.

Those are my initial thoughts on this, and as I am talking about it, I am liking the concept more and more. Since the Legion(s) would still be lost to the Imperium, it would even be a (possibly) viable idea to incorporate in the main universe, and not just an alt history, though I suppose my peers would be the final judges on that. Interesting topic G3rman; hopefully we get some more contributions and can begin a decent discussion to help better our comments and critiques on the subject in the future.

Glad you like the topic! I'll add your thoughts to the main post to give others some ideas to think on.

The way I see it is that even if the legions are supposedly wiped out, you can still play them before they were destroyed or in the Alt-verse concept they can still be alive in some shape or form during the present timeline. I don't see there being any reason not to play a Missing Legion, presumed destroyed or no, as long as you don't claim that your fluff is true and your legion is made of awesomeness. It also provides great opportunities to those who like the idea of legions but do not necessarily like the existing ones, allowing them to create their own story, color scheme, and even primarch if they are willing to go that far!

If you come up with your own names for the Legions, feel free to post them. I just took some from a random chapter generator that peaked my interest, you can do the same as well and we can add to the list!

Hmm. I haven't been called wolf outside of the Fang in a fair bit, i.e. forever. I must be getting wolfier with old age.

And naturally, if they're the Purifiers, then there Primarch is a mysterious being known as the Lord Purinator, and they currently reside on a space hulk.

I feel like I should be getting some sort of reference here, but I am not.

I will add the space hulk idea to the homeworld section and perhaps it would be good to start the Primarch name section off. Would this legion's look or style be based off of an idea or existing historical group? Or would you describe them more through their actions and their name than what their culture is?

I'm thinking a devout chapter similar to the Word Bearers that often set about totally burning whole worlds and populations just to ensure their obedience to IoM and free of chaos taint. Perhaps they were censured for this outright slaughter of innocent humans but continued to do so, feeling that the Emperor and their brothers could not see the heretics as they could through their eyes. The Emperor was forced to send the Space Wolves to eliminate them and their rampage, but some were able to escape by finding refuge on a Space Hulk.

Or perhaps the Purificators purged chaos but in turn were slowly corrupted themselves by exposure and were forced to be 'purified'. Oh the irony of that.

See, if I was making a lost legion, I'd definitely have them expunged from the galaxy before the Heresy began.

The first ever Penitent Crusade, perhaps?

I'd even probably have it so they're almost ready to begin the journey home, with whatever the Emperor commanded them to fetch/kill almost within sight of being found/slain.

And as for names, I'd want something with 'Tigers' in. We've already got Lion heraldry for the DA and Wolf Heraldry for the Space Wolves, so let's see some tiger-stripes! :)

When I think missing Legions, I always think

1. Suffered from execessive mutations (maybe Warp based mutations ala Primarch XI having his baby crib damaged before being thrown into the Warp in Horus' vision) and had to be put down. Their Primarch is locked away in a status vault somewhere nice (like a rock orbiting a black hole).

2. The only Legion to get completely destroyed by Xenos during the Great Crusade (the Legions and the Primarches were the Emperor's greatest warriors, they shouldn't be able to lose, and the Imperium shouldn't know if they do). Primarch currently in the collection of a new Xenos special collector of oddities character B) B) .

My theory is the Mortifactors and the Doom Eagles. Both are descendants of the overly large Ultramarine Legion and both are of a distinctly different demeanor than the normal Ultramarine descendants. I think Games Workshop has been hinting at this for a while now.

I'm pretty sure that the Mortifactors are somewhat unique merely because of the planet they recruit from, with the warrior priests and such. They don't really diverge all that much other than having a greater importance on chaplains as well as occasionally having their premonitions.

Don't have much experience in the Doom Eagles so I couldn't say, but I doubt either of them are remnants of the missing legions. It just wouldn't explain why they would have a geneseed totally different from all the other marines without a known primarch, the Adeptus Mechanicus would ask questions as to why their gene tithe didn't match up with other known descendants of *insert donor here*. Each of the primarchs had their own unique geneseed, its something most treasured among the marines, and I don't think the lost legion could lose theirs so easily.

I will add something similar to the top post.
