RT era Pre-fluff Spacewolves

So while I haven't actually painted much in a while (think the counter stuck at 3 minis in the last 5 years) I have been trolling ebay and have been feeding the ledpile, and over the last 2 years I've managed to gather quite a collection of RT era marines. Anyway now I'm ready to actually start and get some stuff painted up. Took me about a year and half to decide they're going to be spacewolves, and have even found some RT era spacewolves transfers, and have now finally started on a first test mini.

The plan is to do a proper Rogue trader era army, I'm not planning on playing (haven't played a game since 2nd edition) so that makes it easier as I'm not bothered with making a playable army, instead I'm following the armylists from the compendium and the book of astronomican, plus the plan is basicly to ignore all current spacewolves fluff and have some proper chaplains, medics, techmarines and librarians like they did back in the day, and will also completly ignore all the norse influences.

Anyway here are some pics of the first test mini, in various stages

Obviously it's not ready, but I need to figure out if I want to go with NMM or real metalics, to be honest I pretty much stopped painting real metallics and switched to NMM when I started painting confrontation minis, so it's probably been at least 10 years since I've used them, so I may have to replace them, not sure that NMM will work with the grey armour though so I'll probably go with metalics

Also I need look into getting some stuff so I can get the transfers right, as the surface isn't smooth on the first one I tried

Also not sure what colour to paint the gun, the studs on the left shoulderpad, or the backpack

Anyway hopefully I can keep it up, as there's about 50+ marines, 2 dozen terminators, a dozen scouts, a couple of dreadnoughts and some assorted vehicles to paint

Apart from a bit of static grass on the base, the first test mini is done

Though I did find out I definetly need to get some new metallic paints, as most of my pots died, I was barely able to revive a bit of chainmail to paint this one,

so the metals are just a quick drybrush of chainmail for now.

Just need to figure out who makes good metallic paints these days.

and a small preview of what's up next

Great stuff! Very nostalgic!

Keep it up Mr Tough Guy.

I remember my first ever SM was a SW from the RT box set. You've got the colours crisp and nice. Even the miniscule bolter-symbol on his shoulder pad. Now that's attention to detail.

Hi mate, love the nostalgia factor from these!

regarding decal work, gloss varnish the area first, that always helps.

also using a decal setting and softener kit (micro set/micro sol) will help.

regarding metallic paints, i think its personal preference, i like the GW silvers but prefer the vallejo golds. go figure..

keep it coming!

So after painting one marine, I'm actually already a bit bored with painting powerarmour, I know not great if you're planning on a spacemarine armour so I've decided to break it up by painting a scout first.

I was planning on finishing this yesterday so I could enter it in a online painting contest which deadline ended yesterday, but stuff got in the way and I wasn't able to finish it, but this is as far as I got:

the insert shows the freehand spacewolf badge I painted on the shoulderpad, had to freehand it as I don't have RT era spacewolf transfers that would fit the tiny shoulderpad (well I could probably have used the sergeant badges on the old sheet with a bit of trimming but I wouldn't have enough for all of them) I was origiganaly planning on painting it on his belt buckle, red on yellow, but after two strokes of paint having made a mistake I realized red on yellow is a pain so went with a white on black wolf on his shoulderpad instead. Not sure what to do with the beltbuckle now, nor what to do with the white oval on his chest, figures they both need something, maybe a skull on the belt and an "ENDURE"on the chest
