Army Painter Primers

I did a review on my blog last month sometime of the pure red army painter spray and I have to say I wouldn't use anything but army painter now it works so well covers nicely just as someone else pointed out light sprays are the key its thicker than the gw primers but works very well i tend to start my blood angels with a pure red spray and a devlan mud wash and layer up from there.

I'm a frustrated GW Spray Gun user, and thought i'd give Army Painter sprays a go on a Baal Predator. Used Dragon Red as a Primer, followed by Pure Red as a base, and very impressed. Dry's very quickly too.

Not sure I'd use them on Infantry though - it looks as though you'd need to spray them before assembling, and as the spray is thicker than GW's, you'd stand a greater chance of masking out the finer details

From my experience it works best on big flat surfaces where you can do quick 'swipes' of spray, stopping it from pooling up in one place.

With the test assembled Assault Marine I tried, swiping doesn't quite get into all the nooks and crannies of the mini - That jump pack blocks paint going in to some areas. I could of course spray partially assembled, or finish with a brush, but i prefer to paint the mini assembled and base coat with the same paint all over.

I paint mine in partial assemblies so a couple of light coats of spray primer seems to get everywhere I need it to. I just find it much easier to paint infantry without guns, packs etc getting in the way and then put them together fully afterwards.

I've just recently tried out the Army Painter sprays. One was the 'Wolf Grey' (I think, I forget right now) for my Sons of Russ. It has sped up my painting procedure tenfold. I wrote an article about it on my blog HERE You can see that it works pretty well on infantry models, but as someone else mentioned, its covereage is good, but can be a little heavy, as it is a primer/basecoat in one, so be sparing in your spraying

I just picked up a blue for my Lizardmen too, and i'm equally impressed. These guys have done a great job with their formula.

Good luck!

Not meaning to hijack this thread or anything, but, has anyone here ever used AP's White primer, then added another coat of a coloured primer over it? Because, I'm getting ready to do some Imperial Fists using the Daemonic Yellow spray primer, and it was suggested on the site that spraying with white primer first will make the yellow "pop" more.

I'm just worried that it'll end up too thick with two coats of spray primer like that and obscure details...Also, that I may have wasted my money buying the White primer when I could've gotten some cheap white spray paint from Wal-Mart or Autozone. *laughs*

I am not sure the white undercoat would make any difference to the yellow primer. Having used the Army Painter Pure Red over various colours of undercoat (Red is another colour that is meant to 'pop' with a white undercoat), there was no difference I could see.
