Matt varnish

Hello, I never used a matt varnish or dullcoat to protect paint on my stuff. Mainly looking for what you guys use(best stuff) and where to get it (UK only). Have found some on one site but says I have to use a varnish 1st. So I guess any advice on using this product as a whole would be great.

Any help greatly welcomed, thanks.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've had mixed results with spray dullcote (most likely due to my own skills and not due to the actual product).

So I searched for a way to protect my models with a matte finish that was easier to apply than spray dullcote because I hated when the spray dullcote would sometimes orange peel or get frosty.

After searching I came across using Future Floor Polish and Tamiya Flat medium as a brush on.

You can read all about it here The Complete Future

They suggest a 3:1 Future to Tamiya ratio for very flat and 10:1 for flat.

I've been using 5:1 (or was it 6:1) and I've been liking the results.

I know my post sucks without the pics to show you the results so I will try to get some to post.

Ive heard bad things about the dullcote stuff, and you must wear a mask when using the matt varnishes as they are even more harmful than normal sprays!

I personally use the GW matt varnish and i think its worth the money. Only issue i ever had was a white frosting when spraying too close to a model. Do a test first to get the knack of how much to apply and from what distance to spray and you should be fine with any matt varnishes.

Problem with just using Dullcote is it tends to wear off.

I spray all my models with Krylon Triple Thick Gloss, which give them a nice thick protective layer.

Then I spray that with Dullcote and they come out perfectly matte and protected from wear and tear.

Sorry for ressing this thread, but as i have only acces to GW Satin Spray, or Vallejo varnishes out of a pot, which ones are the best? I'm making imperial fists, and don't want them to shine, at all, but still be a clear yellow.

(Vallejo Model Colour Matt Varnish is the one i'm thinking, but unsure as i never used it)

Thanks in advance

If only those two; I'd spray with GW Satin for proper protection, and brush on the Matt to dull it. Matt varnish (especially brushed on) won't give nearly as much protection compared to Satin, and next, Gloss.

As long as you are not heavy handed with either layer, you should have no problems with major colour change or dulling. You can't avoid at least a little change in colour once varnish is applied, but it's usually not enough to get worked up over. Varnish will effect dry powder weathering effects much more however, so that's a case you'll need to do some experiments with.

Why i'm wondering, is because i just finished my metal Lysander, and while painting i already noticed paint going off at certain spots, vallejo model colour not that good on metal..

So i will need to give it some protection. So GW satin varnish, lightly sprayed, then lightly brushed matt varnish, got ya.

Thanks

I use Winsor & Newton Galeria acrylic mediums matt varnish. I spray this on with an air brush (I've even used the GW flamer). The bonus with this varnish is you can apply with a brush when needed, it's water based acrylic for easy cleaning and thining, It won't yellow with age and it's never not dried clear for me.

How is the army painter anti shine? Because i really would like if my Lysander didn't shine. Atm it has a layer of Matt varnish from Vallejo (with brush)

This is exactly what I do. One solid coat of the Krylon, and then one or two quick coats of the Dullcote.

End of Line
