Kierdale
I'm going to be making some banners soon and, while I've made tabards and loin cloths from GS, back when I used to model ten years ago pretty much all the banners you saw were paper. I'd like to ask everyone which they prefer, which looks best, what are the pros and cons of each and...particularly...what pitfalls there may be. Any and all advice welcome. Subtle Discord
I've had success with sheet aluminum. Not heavy aluminum foil, but 0.75mm sheet. You can get it at a well stocked hobby store, and I'm sure you can find it online. Pros: It's very light, so it won't make a model top-heavy if it's a banner. It's very stiff, so it won't lose its shape. You can carefully shape it to have a natural 'wave'. You can carve, file, cut, and otherwise shape it how you like. Cons: It's very flat, so you'll need to do a bit of greenstuff work on the surface to add some subtle 'drooping' of the 'fabric'. It takes some practice to shape it to look natural. You'll need to wrap tools (round tipped pliers) in soft tape to make sure they don't mangle it while you work. You'll need a few special tools to make the most of it. Along with round tipped pliers, a Jeweller's saw (Razor saw) is the best way to cut a shape out. Hanska
Ok..First post on B&C after stalking around for a while.. I'm facing the same problem as OP. After thinking a while aluminium sheet sounded a good way to make banners but I'm facing a problem with that. I've been told I'm pretty good when it goes to sculpting with GS but I have a real problem making cloth. I've seen a hundred tutorials of loincloth for space marines but is there any good tutorials for folding of larger cloth? Well not even tutorials but even a collection of reference pictures would be great. winterdyne
If you go look at giganticdark's WIPs for his FW ultramarine conversion, there's interesting banner work there. Basically, you sculpt the banner 'flat', including all raised detail etc, then cover it in moulding sillicone, to get a flexible mould. You can then use this to produce a putty copy of the banner which you can flex into shape. Oooh, nice idea  For those not near a well-stocked hobby shop or those seeking a cheap practice medium I'm informed that the foil often found on wine and champagne bottles is also a pretty good solution for banner material, it can be straightened, crinkled, billowed etc. with nothing more than a little patience and some very basic tools. Drucifer
Not having made a banner in a few years perhaps am a little out of touch with the current vogues but for my old Blood Angels company I used to make them from cotton and paint them, I felt it made them look more like traditional military banners and flags. winterdyne
Always found cotton too coarse. Silk (or synthetic silk-alike) works very well though. :-) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/242785-banners-and-flags/#findComment-2937452 Share on other sites
