Despicable Me - Astral Claws Saga

How do,

so in needing a break from painting fantasy combined with playing a game of WFB the other day which didn't enthuse me quite as much as I'd hoped, I decided late last night to return to my favoured army, Space Marines. Now I've mostly got a 3000 point Iron Hands demi-company painted up already, so I wanted to paint something not black made up of salvage from previous expansions to the IH and from other projects.

A quick root around and I came across this as a starting force

That's barely the tip of the iceberg of Marine spares I've got, but that's a small but perfectly formed 750 point army to get me started with.

So next step is too fit all the backpacks to the marines, find a weapon army for the dread, then spray them black (bar the front left marines which already have their silver paint applied from last nights test run.

This will hopefully be a bit of a speed run of painting, Though I need to order some astral claws shoulder pads an maybe some resin bases with some birthday pennies next week, If I'm good and get them all painted by the target deadline of Wednesday night.

More pics and maybe a bit of IC blurb to come later, when there's something more to show off.

@ Gawain - I'm not sure yet, possibly the tyrants legion route, but I'm not sure yet, I'll see what else the corpse-takers recover from the storage departments and play it by ear mainly.

@ Darth - it is yeah, that guy is going for a swim in some fairy power spray later, so in the mean time another has stepped up to the plate to control these honourable marines.

All

Spent some time painting this evening, getting the silver done across the force and putting some blue onto the occasional armour piece. I was trying to do a nice 'clean' force, a novelty for me since I paint in a very earthy dark feel, so gleaming silver armour didn't feel right. A quick wash of extremely watered down Tamiya orange clear however, has given them a bit of a burnished look to their armour. I'm not just sure it comes out brilliant in photos this tme of night. I'll take some more tomorrow though.

So, pics then, cos everyone prefers that to rambling text.

@Crusader - lol, TBH I want an ingame option for preds with hurricane bolters from the Stormraven. Twin-linked bolter in the turret andc you have a real dakka tank.

@Forgefather - the silver goes from my usual style

Black undercoat

Basecoat chainmail

Wash badab black 1/1 water

Wash a mix of asurmen blue/devlan mud

Highlight chainmail

Wash tamiya orange clear 1/10 water.

When its had overnight to completely dry, i'll put some final chainmail/mithril highlights

@darth - he does fit the bill, just a pity its failcast and not as nice as I'd like.

All

So a bit more painting this morning and I'm quite happily ploughing through at a fairly quick pace. Did all the gold before, which is more a brassy colour which suits them quite well I think.

Took a colour more pics with better light, just need to paint the eye lens of the helms, and the oath parchments and then crack out all the arms and weapons to get them done.

I might actually get this finished by Wednesday after all :tu:

In my opinion the Astral Claws want to look like they're on the edge of violence, not necessarily charging screaming into the thick of it, but a more calculating, cool headed and sinister approach. That said, a cool set of tones and colours illustrates this as well as the pose of the models. In short, I'd stay away from warmer tones and stick to cooler ones, acting as a microcosm to the over all character of the chapter.

For the eyes I'd suggest a green, the gold is just perfect as it is with the brazen feel. For some offset colours, something as simple as a white helmet here and there would suffice I think.

@gawain - Aye, it may well turn out to be a fairly 'static' army, as something different from my 'stoic advance' bolter line Iron Hands. I went with your suggestion of green for the lenses, might have a look at the white helms down the line, thinking about it I do need to mark the sergeants helms in another colour, so white for them could do the trick.

small update, the two 5-man tac squads are almost done, just their weapons to do then any final details and highlights. they're serviceable enough for a photo at least

Hello, Alex here, great looking astral claws, makes me weep as I'm trying to do astral claws and cant meet your epic standard, as I'm a Games Workshop "fanboy", (well not realy but thats all I realy know, when it comes to miniatures), I was wondering what games workshop colour could substitute for your tamia orange?

Thanks for your time!

Heya Alex,

I don't know about epic, but many thanks ^_^

For replicating the Tamiya orange, I've never actually tried, I picked up a couple of bottles when I was first taught the technique, and you use it so thinned down that I'm still using the second pot 3 years later. You could potentially do it with extremely watered down blazing orange mixed with devlan, but tbh, for the sake of a couple of quid and for the effect it gives you, I'd just pick up a pot of it. It's definitely worth it in my opinion.

How do,

'Finished' the two tactical squads earlier this evening, just need to order some resin bases and the shoulder pads for them to top them off. Fairly happy with how they turned out and whilst the whole 750 points havent been completed, its fairly productive for me

Will do a bit more on the Pred tomorrow before I go away for the weekend, hopefully I'll get a couple of pics up before I go.

How do,

after a weekend away visiting the lass, I'm back, new paints in hand and keen levels revived to continue with the project. I'm now signed up to a tournament in February now as well, so I've got a deadline which will either help or hinder the keen.

Made a start on my first Corpse Taker this evening and whilst I don't really see the Astral Claws as a particularly 'gothic' chapter, there's obviously something dark and foreboding about the grim Corpse Takers, so servo skulls buzzing round their master seemed appropriate.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w96/Hermanesq/Astral%20Claws/Corpsetaker.jpg

I'm gonna green stuff him up a bit more, once I've had a peek for some inspirational pics, but I think it's an alright start for him, but opinions and advice are always appreciated

Chris

And if a mod could delete those extra posts, that'd be awesome as well. Cheers
