Grimnar's Company Icons/Badges/Colors Question

Ok, so I'm fairly new and was really interesting in making my army based around Logan Grimar, but had a few questions as my left shoulders are all anxiously awaiting a response.

1. The TWTSBS badge (of white on black) is for the Great Wolf's company, so is that what I should use for all my models (including Grey Hunters, Claws, etc.)? Or just the priests, dreadnaughts, wolf guard, etc?

2. What about Grimnar's "old" badge of the wolf howling at the moon (black/white on grey)? If that is from before he became great wolf, could/should that be used for any models? Perhaps like they haven't updated their armor or prefer their old one?

3. Somewhat off topic, but why does GW always show the yellow/Ragnar Blackmane badges/icons on boxes, their websites, and in WD?

I understand there is some creative license given, but I really want to try and make them as "realistic" and fluff-accurate as possible.

Thanks in advance all!

When a Wolf Lord becomes a Great Wolf, generally the whole pack takes TWTSBTS emblem (mentioned on pg 80 of the codex) though I don't think anyone would be opposed to seeing some with the older symbol, the Night Runner, especially when explained as haven't updated, etc. They could've been on campaign elsewhere when it happened or something.

As to the Blackmane emblem, Ragnar was one of the first models to be sculpted for the 2nd edition line (the era where most all of the GW minis were still metal) and as such, was, and technically is, the only Wolf Lord model available for purchase without conversion. So the majority of the SW products were painted/drawn with the Blackmane emblem to A ) help promote the Ragnar model, imo, and B ) because he was the only Wolf Lord we had access to. After that, it just kinda stuck.

Also, Ragnar is both the newest Wolf Lord and the youngest, so for the older players that started at or before he came out, it's sort of like we're climbing the ranks with him.

Wulfebane, I hate to nitpick your answer, but technically, Ragnar has been around since late 1st edition. There was a brief period of time right before 2nd Edition 40K was released that the Space Wolves models were on the market, with rules and backstory that were published in White Dwarf. I still have the box art from a few of those original minis, I could post a pic if needed. It wasn't long before 2nd ed. 40K came out though.

Everything else you stated is correct though.

Yep, Ragnar (and Njal, and Ulrik) all were released about the same time over the winter of 1992-1993, along with the "new" version of the Space Wolves in White Dwarf 156 and 157. 2nd Edition hit about 18 months later, in the summer of '94.

For those that might not remember, the original rules for Ragnar gave him a special additional kick attack, where he'd use the auto-spikes in his boots, along with his super-dexterity, to slash an opponent in straight up James Bond ninja-assassin fashion.

Hey, they are YOUR minis! You can paint 'em how you want to. There is even one of the Space Wolves decal sheets that has that WTSBS in black. (Although the expensive Forgeworld Space Wolves decal sheet has it in white.) IMHO it would look better on grey than it would any other color.
