Played my first game (ever as SW) against IG tonight

I played my first game against IG tonight. My buddy and I played two games both 1,000pt, he was using a blob IG army kitted out with 7 Lascannon teams. He also had Al-Rahim leading a blob in reserves to outflank.

My first game I used a basic list with 3 groups of GH w/WG w/PF, 3 RB's, 2 Speeders w/ 2xHB, and a dread with PC/HF then a WGBL. He popped my far RB early and it exploded. He then got his reserves on the second turn, rolled a 6 and place right behind my other RB and melta'd them, also exploding them. Pretty much I got boned from the start by his reserves.

The second game I played a list with a RP and a LRR with a group of 10 GH and 2 groups of 5 GH in 2 razorbacks and 2 speeders I have in reserve with HB/HF to deep strike in. First turn, my LL nuke a whole heavy weaps squad, then the LRR auto cannon nearly took out the other. I disembarked from the LRR and Boltgunned one of his infantry squad to death, nearly wiping him in the first turn. He failed reserve then I cleaned up the next turn leaving him only with his last Platoon Command Squad. He conceded after he failed his reserve roll again.

It was my first time playing in nearly 8-10 years and I had a plast. Re-learned a lot and definitely figured out some things not to do... like NOT disembark from a transport when I know a lascannon has a clear shot.

Well, the biggest thing i learned was not to test your luck against Lascannons, even IG. Also, be mindful of potential reserves when positioning.

My 2nd game list was:

RP w/ LL/JotWW

2x 5 GH w/WG PF, in Razorbacks

10 GH w/WG PF, in LRR

2 Speeders w/ HB/MM.

Here's some additional advice, that's been discussed here before:

- RP can fire one power per turn (Jaws, LL, etc.) that's a shooting power from the hatch of a Rhino. LR's and Razorbacks of all types don't have that option (no fire hatch). Up to you how to consider this information, it's pretty well buried by now likely, in other threads. Basically, take a 9 to 10 man GH pack in a Rhino and stick a RP in there, and fire away every turn with him and if you can the Special Weapon (Meltagun, Plasmagun, Flamer) at whatever target is in range.

- There's a great deal of debate over 9+1 GH's in Rhinos/Pods, or 10 GH's in whatever transport you choose. Razorbacks with five GH's and a WGPL in charge can work; the issue is that overall, missing 4 to 5 Gh's on average can hurt at the higher points ranges. Some consider Razorback spam GH's (say four to six Razorbacks with 5 GH's) as a great thing; it's also frowned upon by others.

- The Speeders seem fine, and at your likely 1000 points or so for the games, you're pretty well gold for now. The question is what if anything more you wish to collect and when. The thing is, on these boards, it's wisest to list full points totals in the army list section as well as here. It creates less trouble, and also there's the fact that the rules are set that way.

Overall, consider that your force remains yours. No one else has the right to tell anyone what to take; merely, one may ask for advice and take it as one will. Please understand that this advice here is subject to the aforementioned statement. Only you, OP, can control your army. All that said, thanks for the report and good luck in your future games. Nice job again, on winning one out of the first ten games, that's rare.

againts a mass army like that, I'd use lots and lots of frag grenades, they do wonders against orcs and IG, Flamers are nice when popping out of a drop pod behind enemy lines.

-As stated before there is an advantage to having a rune priest in a rhino and shooting out the hatch

-For my greyhunters i usually take 9 plus a wolfguard and stick them in rhinos, if i use razorbacks I take them as the long fangs dedicated transport and leave them in my deployment zone for extra lascannon shots. I used to do smaller squads but i kept having the issue of not having enough clout against other armies that do well in close combat.

-I don't have any landspeeders put together, but I've heard they're really quite good.

-In a thousand point game I don't know as i'd actually use a LRR, as it's almost a quarter of your points at that point. I'd drop the 10 man+wgpl to a 9 man+wgpl, yes you lose your extra free weapon, but you also get 240 points that you can put into another 10 man gh squad with plenty of points to spare, or even a stock 5 man termie squad in a drop pod with 40 points left over for you to customize a couple of them as you see fit.

Don't mind me however, I am just a whelp and very new to the game myself. And as always, it's your list and you can do what you want (i will admit it must be horrifying to have to deal with a LRR coming at you in a low point value match like that)

Well, I used the LRR just to get a feel for it in a game. I can definitely see it's usefulness in bigger point games.

And I take everything into consideration here, no worries on sounding pushy guys. That's what I come here for, bounce ideas, get feedback, and learn. A lot of things sound good in the codex, but you don't really know until you play with it.

I'm also new to the Fang, but as an experienced IG player your buddy played a terrible list in general, and especially if he knew you were playing wolves. 9 lascannons in a 1k game? Al-Raheem in any game?

Sounds like you had fun, and learned, which is great, and I hope to be learning soon. But that IG list, as described, is not an accurate representation of what challenges the IG will represent for you.
