zahroth
Hey guys, Since a couple of months I have been painting and building a Grey Knight list for a friend of mine. He used to be my buddy with whom I entered the hobby 18 years ago. He has quit more then 12 years ago selling all his models but occasionally likes to play a game (using my models). For his birthday (July) I had collected several metal Grey Knights and the idea was to paint them up. His wife knew about the plan, and when the new Grey knights arrived in summer, we purchased another part of the new grey knight army. I used some of the bits of the new Grey knights to make the army WYSIWYG. I am allmost finished, still need to do some light/white highlights. When this is done, I will make some picture. This is what I have build and painted: - Inquisitor in Terminator armour and Psycannon (used Logan) - Brotherhood Champion (used Emp champ) - 1x 10 Purifiers, 1x hammer, 7x Halberd and either 2x Psycannon or 2x flamer (using the old metal models) - 2x 10 Strikes, 2xPc, 1x Hammer (new plastics) - 8x Termies 3x hammer, 5x Halberd + 1x Psy, 1x flamer (using the old metal models) - 2x 10 Interceptors, 2xPC, 1x Hammer, 7x Halberd (using the old metal models) - 2x Twin Autocannon Dread (forgeworld) - 1x Dread knights (sword Inc + teleport) - 1x Landraider Crusador Still building: - 1x Gunship - 1x box termies (building at least 1x Banner + 4 other models) - 1x Grand master (using Stern model + Termy bits) I also might be able to get an already finished Librarian I could use your adivise on my last activities that I still need to do Questions: 1) The Grand Master, I 'm planning to build him with an Incinerator. yes/no? 2) Should I removes some of the metal halberd from the Interceptors? yes/no and if yes, how many? 3) how to build the remaining termies? (making 2 units of 5, or 1x5 termies + Inc + 1x5 paladins )2x psyc)?) 4) Transports: None are purchased yet; How many would you recopmmend (Rhinos/Razors) and for which units? 5) Army list: What's the 'perfect list' at 1800 points using the models I have? In the 3 test battles I have played, I have always used: - Inquisitor as HQ - 2x10 Strikes; both with 2x PC, 1x Ham, PCammo - 1x10 Intercepotors PCammo - 2x dreads In the last game I have taken 6 termies (1x banner, 1x hammer, 4x halberd) + Brotherhood Champ in a Crusador. I was positively surprised about the combat punch of this unit! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/243068-grey-knights-last-advise/ Share on other sites
the jeske
1) The Grand Master, I 'm planning to build him with an Incinerator. yes/no? no. the termis should also be 2 psycannons there should be enough parts in all the plastic box you had to cut up the metal termy and give him one . 2) Should I removes some of the metal halberd from the Interceptors? yes/no and if yes, how many? normaly I would go with 6 halabards 2 psy 1 hammer 1 sword , but I dont run them x2 but with NDKs . I would leave the halabards alone . adding a second hammer maybe a good idea. 3) how to build the remaining termies? (making 2 units of 5, or 1x5 termies + Inc + 1x5 paladins )2x psyc)?) well your not using a GM[realy a brotherhood chapion?] so paladins shouldnt be there if your already using interceptors . psycanons maxed out , always always 1 hammer per unit . 4) Transports: None are purchased yet; How many would you recopmmend (Rhinos/Razors) and for which units? well kind of a depands if you want the strike to be campers or not . if campers then razors , if aggresive then rhinos . purifieres as they are run as a single choice [why not 4 psycannons if your taking 10 ?] then a rhino. 5) Army list: What's the 'perfect list' at 1800 points using the models I have? INQ venerable dreadx2 crusder with termis interceptors +NDK 2xstrikes. one termi doing a standing for a librarian . . libby termis run in the crusader. termi inq runs with one of the strikes for the extra psycannon . The Holy Heretic
What a devious friend you are - I've used the old pushers adage "first time is free" and gotten a few people hooked ;) Your list and unit configurations look quite decent in my eyes. I'd go with psyammo on 10man squads, 1 hammer/5 models, and halberds on purifiers. Then I'd make sure to get a Vindicare too - its such a nicemodel and a downright bastard on the field. And my GKGM never leaves home without his incinerator - every other weapon is just too darn expensive :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/243068-grey-knights-last-advise/#findComment-2938611 Share on other sites

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. While the rest of the Terminators should be fitted out with Psycannons, an incinerator is a good buy for the GM. It's very cheap to upgrade from the GM's Storm Bolter, while a Psycannon on the GM is just too expensive to be worth it. Inquisitor Fox
Paired with the Grand Master's increased BS though, the psycannon is particularly brutal. You're almost guarenteed auto-hits, which is a lot of potential rending results. I would say it really depends on the role you have in mind for your Grand Master, as well as the role of the unit you place him with. It's also 40 points more than an incinerator. I don't think that's a very good value-for-points. You could buy 4 Psycannon elsewhere in your army and still have points left over for the points you GM will pay. His BS doesn't give enough of an advantage to offset that. His Incinerator is quite cheap on the other hand, and almost certainly worth it. zahroth
Hi Guys, Thanks for the replies! 1) The Grand Master, I 'm planning to build him with an Incinerator. yes/no? no. the termis should also be 2 psycannons there should be enough parts in all the plastic box you had to cut up the metal termy and give him one . I think the Terminator box only contains 1 Psycannon per 5 models. I already have a metal one, So I will build a 2nd one (for either a unit of 10 or 2 units of 5). I am in line with ‘Holy Heretic’, ‘Chengar Qordath’ and ‘Valerian’, that for the additional points of Psycannon on a Grand Master, you could buy a lot of other Psycannons in the army! I have heard several stories on interceptors. Some like them cheap (without halberds) and others don’t mind paying the upgrades (like yourself). Reason for me to include them was mainly the models I had available. Now that I have also build 2x strikes out of the new plastics, I might have some spare power weapons. I think I will build some additional Close Combat arms with power weapons, so that he can replace them whenever he wants to (the metal halberd arms break-off quite easily). I was aware of the 1 hammer per unit (or 1 in 5 termies), and all 10-men units have Psyammo. I might be mistaken, is the brotherhood champion the one who makes you re-roll misses in the first round of combat? Because that’s the one I have. I teamed him up with 6 termies (with banner) and assaulted from a Crusador. 4*4 Helberd attacks with re-rolls (and strength buffs) are seriously dangerous! I am also going to build a GM, but the models hasn’t arrived yet. In the test games played, the Inquisitor and or BC did fine as a HQ. Should I build other Terminator unit upgrades like Apotocary? Should I consider to not double weapons on models so that I can also deploy them as paladins . In order to do this, what is the best Paladin unit set-up? 4) Transports: None are purchased yet; How many would you recommend (Rhinos/Razors) and for which units? well kind of a depands if you want the strike to be campers or not . if campers then razors , if aggresive then rhinos . purifieres as they are run as a single choice [why not 4 psycannons if your taking 10 ?] then a rhino. Well, I already have a crusader and gunship (WIP), I think I will advise to add some Razors (TLHB + PCA). We might swap the TLHB with a stormbolter + hatch to make the models multi purpose as it could be fielded as a rhino. Reason I don’t have 4 Psycannons in purifiers yet is that I don’t have the models. I have 2 metal psycannons only. The Strikes and Interceptors all have plastic Psycannons and I don’t want to mix models in units. Why are venerable dreads that much better then normal ones? For me the additional points are not worth it. Can you convince me otherwise? Ow, And I’m building the Gunship with Melta and Lascannons as these are missing in the army. Is that OK? The Holy Heretic
Ow, And I’m building the Gunship with Melta and Lascannons as these are missing in the army. Is that OK? I'd go with Melta and Plasma. GKs have plenty of anti-armour in the form of psycannons/hammers, a melta is quite unique though. The plasma is one of the few weapons available that can burn power and terminator armour effectively, and you have very little shooting to deal with this. Alternately I'd go with assault cannon/psyammo on the 'raven for more psycannon goodness. The only advantage the lascannon has over psycannons is the range - which the 'raven can compensate for in the form of movement. But plasma cannons have the advantage of range, AP and denying FNP over the assault cannons - besides you want the 'raven to speed across the field and draw fire for its cover save, and will more often than not often only fire one weapon with its POTMS ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/243068-grey-knights-last-advise/#findComment-2938971 Share on other sites

the jeske
Why are venerable dreads that much better then normal ones? For me the additional points are not worth it. Can you convince me otherwise? because the army has only 2 of them , and because they form a shoting power base with the strike giving them a better psychic power protection . IF you would run no strike but a 2x2NDK 2xstrike , I would take non dreads then. 3 normal dreads are good for razrospam lists but you dont want that. Reason I don’t have 4 Psycannons in purifiers yet is that I don’t have the models. I have 2 metal psycannons only. The Strikes and Interceptors all have plastic Psycannons and I don’t want to mix models in units. terminator psylancers are easy to convert to make more psycannons . but I understand the lack of models . thing is why run 10 dudes then and not 5 shoty in a razorback. I might be mistaken, is the brotherhood champion the one who makes you re-roll misses in the first round of combat? Because that’s the one I have.I teamed him up with 6 termies (with banner) and assaulted from a Crusador. 4*4 Helberd attacks with re-rolls (and strength buffs) are seriously dangerous! I am also going to build a GM, but the models hasn’t arrived yet. In the test games played, the Inquisitor and or BC did fine as a HQ. and with a GM they wouldnt be a good hth unit . problem with the champ is , that re-rolls and all his A are not very good too few to actualy do something , at the same time a libby gives you hood and good psychic powers [always run with staff for then +2inv in hth] and a GM buffs your units makes your intereceptor and/or NDK scouting , makes your units scoring if they are not , buff paladins or termis with counter attack etc. both the BC and the champ should never be used unless you are forced to do it [like scenario cant take HQ with +2 save , for example] . I am in line with ‘Holy Heretic’, ‘Chengar Qordath’ and ‘Valerian’, that for the additional points of Psycannon on a Grand Master, you could buy a lot of other Psycannons in the army! its only a question of points if you dont maxmize . psycannons effectivnes scales . 12or 14 psycannons are not just twice as better then 6 .If your going to use purifires and intereceptors and both an INQ with psycannon and strikes with psycannons[+possible psybolt razorbacks] then a GM with a cannon adds yet another 4 shots to your army[relentless and all] . an incinerators doesnt add a thing to the army . If your setting up for a charge , then you dont want to kill too many dudes to be out of charge range . If you want incinerators the only way to do it is to take them on NDKs .
