DIY Divine Death Vindicator

Hey All,

busy with a Vindicator project. Basic model is finished now, ready for painting.

I do not like the vindicator as is from the box, it looks fragile, and beefed it up with plating. Gunner, smoke, light etc added later. Your opinions are appreciated.

sweet tank. Im diggin' the GS skill. And awesome Vindy symbol on the back with the shock waves very nice idea.

Thanks DeathKnight2000. Actually the symbol is a theme in the army where all vehicle have their own ' squad marking', making them stand out and get 'personality'. Similarly the troop transports carry the squad marking as well. Will post some work in near future and will publish more on markings in DD IA in time.

One problem with the model, though. You seem to be missing the treads on the back of the tank. Other than that, nice model.

thanks, ;) I paint those seperately. I put the vindi on tracks for the picture only, they're not glued yet. Actually doors, dozer blade, turret are all painted separately, mounted for the pic only.

Hey All,

Update on the Vindicator project.

The main color of the DD scheme is black and I am looking for ways to make it more than 'just' black, paint in little nuances so the blacks pop a bit more, make them more alive.

So I've applied this on the vindi. I think it looks good in the sense that effectevely you're moving away from black but you want to keep the blackness. Not yet happy with the front slopes, they need to be darker.

Paintes as 'the light is comming from above', I left the sides black and applied highlight to top and fron/back slopes.

Any comments/ideas/examples are welcome. Is this something you apply when painting black?

2 example, each in color and b&w (to amphisise the effect)

Hey All,

@Grimdarkness, Rafen_2, VAGABOND, Denrik Greymane, Olisredan, Alex567:

thank you all, glad you appreciate it, your kind words keep the fire burning so the Imperium will live yet another day pushing out the emperor's finest!

Must say that the "Neon look" is less neon under normal light conditions, the pic emphasizes the effect, but put a lamp on it an woof there you have it :)

@Olisredan: didn't know I had GS fu ^_^ but it is obtained by first modeling the detail with milliput and than creating a mould with which I can then stamp out copies using GS. I find milliput works better than greenstuff in getting sharper lines and smoothness. However the approach is time consuming, but then again I'm steadily building a library of DD iconography.

@Alex: the red is created by layering 6 red tints from dark red towards a light orange, where the last 2 layers are highlights

@BoldType: magic! :D

will post more progress later this week hopefully

I knew it! He's a witch!

Burn him!?!

No! Get his secrets!

I was wondering, because I've had the idea. Make a icon/symbol/detail in whatever medium that suits the situation. Create it flat so it's easy to make a press-mould. From there, create greenstuff casting of the icon/symbol/detail and let it cure for awhile to stiffen it. Then, carefully pop it out so you can 'drape' and bend it over the place you want it. If I'm even close to the mark, then I know my idea is not crazy.

Very nice work. I look forward to seeing more.

Edit: P.S. Thanks for taking the time to bulk the kit up. I like to see that I'm not the only one who wants to make the armour look heavier. I noticed a few odd holes drilled in the top that seem a bit random. Are they just some detail, or a future mounting point for something?

That's it, although I tend to preform and let the GS harden out, nothing more annoying then deformed GS detail. You can even do '3d' so not only flat, but it can take quite an effort to tidy things up until useable... I tend to search for alternatives, but who knows.

Thanks, glad you appreciate it. The holes are for the searchlight, radar, the rods for attaching smoke launchers are still inside at the front. Since GW tends to change load out over time I want my config to be flexible in terms of WYSIWYG

All I can think of to add is, magnets.

Build small 'mount points' out of GS and plastic, and make them modular to take Rare Earth magnets. If you make the mount point 'generic' and use the same magnet in upgrade bits, you can build almost any upgrade to fit it, now or in the future. It's something I've started to try to do, create points that I don't have use for now, but maybe in future I can 'bolt on' something from the next codex and/or an extra pintle-mount-weapon from the current codex.

Miliput moulds, eh? I'll have to look into that. Do you have more picture goodness, yet?

Hey All,

finally finished another stage. Have been struggling to find time to progress and struggling with highlights in time found

My first highlight attempt (unfortunately didn't make a pic of it, shown is pic with the HL in progress to give idea) was too much and broke the model a bit. Too strong on the sides so everything is fighting for attention, so I redid it now more subtle (at least I think :P), and of course that takes time :P

Crappy:

2 types of highlights are used. The top has the strongest highlight, side and fronts darkest highlight to keep them black.

Repainted the blacks on the sides as well, to make them darker. Coloured the fans, and spend some time doing NMM on the exhausts.

Anyway let me hear what you think.

Hey All,

an update on this project: Divine Death Pattern - Planning and Base

Divine Death Pattern - Planning

Ok, learning all the time. On the first tanks I made I did the pattern without real planning in advance, it worked but over time I came to think that it would be better, maybe less messy, to have some structure in the pattern. I think the key is symmetry although I kinda like the free format breaking up symmetry as this tends to be boring. I imagined what the servitors doing the paint job would do and thought they would come up with some preconfigured format, and no imagination whatsoever :nuke: . So symmetry it is with a bit of free format, but within concept on the top.

I used very thin tape to do the planning and as it is white it also give a good impression of the end-result as the pattern involves 'white' as well.

Divine Death Pattern - Base

Finally, painting time. Using 3 grey tints following the light so: top light, sides normal/dark, slopes and lower levels in between. As the thinking has already been done it's just a matter of filling in. Made some small adjustments to the plan befor painting to improve on dynamic/interesting lining. After finishing completely with the pattern I'll need to patch up the highlights. I knew this was coming but for me it is the best approach because there won't be any screwy breaks or gradations.
