Wolf Guard Packs (No TDA)

Recommended Posts

Hey all, just a brief intro. As the name suggests i'm along term blood angels player (been playing since 2ed) and relatively new member of the B&C. I'm here because i'm getting a bit bored of the boys in red, there's only so many times you can play a DOA list.

Anyway back on topic, i'm looking to get into space wolves as a second army and was wondering how effective PA wolf guard are, mainly because I can't stand terminator models at all, but also because my friend has converted up some awesome looking wolf guard in power armour that I want to include in the army.

I'm going to be using some as pack leaders obviously, but wanted people's opinions on how to run a PA wolf guard pack, clearly storm shields are a must.

Thanks

The best way to run them, without any Termie armour is to probably put them into a razorback and use them as a specialist assualt unit. So if a Grey hunter unit gets tangled up, you can send these guys in within 12 inches to deal with it, or to march up and fire. Just remembering that these guys don't have the all capable flexability and cheapness of a grey hunter, you have to arm them for the task that you want them to do. So a power fist, wolf claw,a few combis and a couple plain does the job quite nicely. A good hack and slash unit that is decent for single turn shooting when required. Just get them out, move 6 inches and charge.

I am not entirely sure on storm sheilds, 30 points for one storm sheild on a 1 wound model is limiting. You could take one, it's just not as combat efficent as simply having a plain wolf guard in there instead striking out with 3 melee attacks on the charge and a pistol shot.

I personally roll with a nice mixture between shooty-death and purist CC, one of the great things about the SW pack is that whatever you equip them with you can put them into nearly any other squad.

I often go for at least 1 or 2 Wolf Priests (the beauty of fearless Guard + PF's/PW's/FW's = CC Death).

my average 10 Man WG Pack = 3x Storm Bolters, 4x Storm Shields, 2x Power Fists, 1x Thunder Hammer, 2x Frost Blades, 3x Combi-Meltas, 2x Wolf Claws and 2x Power Weapons = 459 Points (that's the major problem - a major points sink) but those fellas, with a LR Redeemer, Wolf Priest and a WGBL with twin Wolf Claws etc. :)

Depends really, while a Land Raider is all fun and well, nearly 500 points in a unit is fairly extreme, over 700 factoring the transport... It's not soemthing that a lot of lists can afford, if it wasn't such a armour based format it may be worth it.

Though it's just down to difference of opinon I guess, I prefer to keep my wolf guard slightly cheaper or simlar to my grey hunters.

I know some who do. But it seems a waste to me as they can not hold objectives and Grey Hunters can do it.

I always use a 10 man in a LR varient with Ragnar. This makes them extremly killy. They are effective and do not cost too mauch really. You need Logan to make them able to take objectives thou.
