Hail! EDIT: My first Army List!

I am just a young pup, and new to warhammer all together. I have purchased an older army (Rogue Traders, and 80's 90's metal figures). As I was looking through the codex, I noticed that I have every HQ and I have no idea what I am doing for a build. My play strategy is pretty straight forward. Shoot until I am in assault range and unleash my wolves of war. Was planning on building my army around Logan Grimnar. I can't make a wolf lord as awesome as he is (i think). Can anyone help guide this young pup to victory?

Welcome to the fang little brother (or sister) have an ale. Id love to help you with your build ideas but unfortunately that not really my are of expertise. However, you have been welcomed, now prepare to be warned by all the others of the Fang.

Welcome to the Fang!

as for helping.I say test out each unit, then find which you like and go from there. If you have any friends that play 40k play some with them with count-as if you dont have the model.

Are you going to make your own company or use an existing one?

Welcome to the Fang!

Feel like posting what you have exactly, model wise?

A list i find to be a good allarounder (having one me a few local "king of the hill" tournamentsis includes:

1 or 2 Rune Priests w/ at least 1 living lightning and 1 Jaws of the World Wolf

3x 8 Grey Hunters + 1 Wolf Guard w/ Power Fist and Combi-melta/plasma, in Rhinos

Equipped with a meltagun and mark of the wulfen or power weapon

2x 5 or 6 Long Fangs all with Missile Launchers and if points allow it a Razorback each (or just 1 at all)

2 Landspeeders with heavy flamers and multi-meltas for troop or tank-hunting

Then throw in a pack of wolf guard in termie armour with various wargear in a landraider if you play even bigger games.

A tip is to check out the Space Wolves blog! Should be first choice if you google Space Wolf BLog

Welcome to the fang and I'll pass on a warning don't let greenhorn (arez) give you the name greenhorn also it depends how you want to play. If you want a more medium close range fire fight then slaughtering them in close combat then more grey hunters could be for you. But if you want to charge forward shoot a little then destroy them in close combat take blood claws me I try to take an even number to support each other.

Well I have:

HQ's Logan, Njal, Ragnar, Bjorn, Ulrik the slayer, One Rune priest in Term armor

Elites: 9 Terminators with storm bolters. 4 have chain fists, 3 have power fists, and one has a frost sword and missile launcher (thought of fielding 7 of these with wolf claws with logan in a land raider crusader), 5 Scouts 2 Skyclaws

Fast attack: 3 speeders, 7 fenrisian wolves, 4 thunderwolf cavalry (currently converting these)

Heavy Support: 1 Land Raider Crusader

Troops: I have around 40 Space Marines

2 Drop Pods

The HQ's are in ok shape, and this army was purchased second hand so alot of the models need some TLC, and since I paint miniatures as a hobby anyway, I am having a blast doing it! I think i got a good deal I have spent maybe 300 to 350 dollars total thus far.

I thought about making my own chapter, with a wolf lord on a thunderwolf but I am unsure as to what I am doing. I am looking to start with a "core" 1000 pt force, and the ability to throw different things in depending on situation, enemies, and point restrictions. Any and all help is appreciated! And I would be a wolf Brother and the ale is great by the way!

Welcome Brother! First, the goal of a game is to have fun. Put together lists that sound fun to you, play them to learn and don't worry about losing the first few fights. See what you enjoy playing and then build from there. The Wolves are a solid army and you will win with them as you gain experience, so don't worry. Welcome to the Fang and fight with honor.

THIS is the best advice I've ever seen on here.

Welcome to the Fang brother! Have an ale on me, be sure to join the Inglorious Drunkards brawl, and ten points if you can guess how Greenhorn got his name!

Good luck on that.

With what you have, Long Fangs, Long Fangs, Long Fangs!

To make the rest of what you have an all-around collection of options, I'd make the two Skyclaws you already have and turn them into a WGPL and a WP w/ jump packs.

Then I'd take 15 of your 40 marines and turn them into BCs. Magnetize the backpacks on 10 of them to use as Skyclaws in combination with the pack leader options above.

The remaining 25 marines would flesh out into 2 full packs and a 5man. The 5man left over, I'd make into WGPLs for all your packs to come and they'd make great fillers for bulking up your TDA WG pack to grant wound allocation and ablative wounds.

Anyways, that's what I'd do since regardless of what Great Company I run with or tactics I employ, I like to know I can have an army composition built from any option our codex has if and when I should want it.

  • 2 weeks later...

I know it has been awhile since I posted, busy with work and school. But here goes the list I built:

1500 Point army

HQ Logan (just cause this wolf has teeth! probably run Preferred Enemy throughout game)

HQ 2: Rune Priest in Term Armor with Teeth, tail, Master of Runes Beastslayer Saga, chooser of the slain, and JOTWF and LL.

Troops 1: 5 Wolf Guard in Term Armor with Storm Bolters/Wolf Claws, melta bombs, 1 Cyclone Missile Launcher, One with Mark of the Wulfen (Riding in a Land Raider Crusader with Extra Armor and a Multi Melta with the Great Wolf!

Troops 2: 9 Grey Hunters with WGPL (Plasma Pistol, Thunder Hammer, Meltabombs) hunters have: Plasma Gun, Plasma Pistol, Power Weapon, and Mark of the Wulfen). All in a cozy drop pod!

Heavy Support: 5 Long Fangs with Squad Leader: Leader has Plasma Gun and melta bombs. His squad has 3 missile launchers, 1 Las Cannon and a heavy bolter.

My thinking was drop the pod, rush assault, move the LRC up the field, assault as well and have the Long Fangs deal death from a distance.

I am open to all criticism. I really want to field the Thuderwolf cavalry, just where they are so expensive. And I wanted an excuse to field my wicked looking Land Raider. I will post pics. I am not a professional painter, but went with a different bent for the Raider!

EDIT: Almost forgot my Runepriest Onyx!

Firstly, welcome. For your army list, come up with something that doesn't involve massed Grey Hunters in Rhinos and Missile spam, it's what 85% of lists on here are based on and it's BORING! :D

But the list you've posted isn't bad actually. Lose the master of the runes, you really don't need to waste the 50points, but beastslayer on the rune priest is a really good idea.

If you have a wolf guard with Mark of the Wulfen don't arm him with anything other than standard loadout or it's a waste of points.

Maybe a few combimeltas instead of all storm bolters for a bit more anti-armour punch, or combi-plasma for anti-MEQ.

I'd also drop the plasma pistols from the grey hunters & attached wolf guard. A plasma gun/meltagun, power weapon/fist, standard and a power fist on the guard is all you need really otherwise the squad starts getting pricey.
