Canis Majoris
Hey guys I've been buiding up my wolves and now have got to a point where i want to invest in some transports. But i cannot decide between rhinos or drop pods....I mean i see how they both work but i still lean more towards pods...because why risk a rhino being shot up before you get accross the board when you can just pod them to more or less exactly where you want? As i've never used either options i'd apretiate any experiences that might help me make my descision. Guest Drunk Guardian
Rhinos are fantastic against lists with high-volume high-strength long range shooting. For example, I often play Eldar lists which have a TON of 48" Str 6 twin-linked shots at a volume of 30+ shots... this absolutely murders Marines. By having your Marines embarked in Rhinos it forces them to either: shoot at something else or shoot at the Rhinos themselves. That kind of shooting vs Rhinos will eventually take down the Rhino but more than likely you'll see a weapons destroyed / immobilized result as well as a bunch of stuns and pens before it finally blows up... all that shooting that didn't go into your Marine squads kept them alive that much longer and got them that much closer to completing their objective. So... I'd recommend a hybrid of Rhinos / Drop Pods... favoring the Rhinos. Drop Pods have great use too but to go all Drop Pod would make you highly exposed to certain kinds of lists like the example I just gave. dragon950
The only problem with drop podding is that you have to have enough squads doing it to make it worthwhile, which means you have less troops on the field and in your deployment zone. Then when they land they have no hike across to board unless you land in the middle of the opposite army to get them in the fight. Best thing to do is to have an marine heavy army and take 3 drop pods along with rhinos, fill up 2 or 3 so you can drop in 2 on turn one and another in later turns.
